Oh dear. The Kemi fan girls are going to hate that. Mordaunt thinks TWAW.

IKR. It is a more extreme view than starmer. Shock

BIossomtoes · 25/02/2024 19:06

I take it you’re keeping that in your back pocket ready to be produced at a strategic moment @AdamRyan? I’ll enjoy that.

The Tories don't believe they are 20 points behind in the polls and think the pollsters are wrong

Snr Tory source: "Internal party polling is showing that it is a lot closer with Red Wall seats at 10 points and in some places we’re only 5 points behind.”

Someone might want to explain to them that being 5 points behind still means you lose your seat. No idea who is doing their internal polling but it seems to be massively optimistic given the scale of the swing in by elections.

I do find opinion polls fascinating - the methodology. I was reading about why the Literary Digest got their US election result so wrong, despite asking 2 million people. But someone called Gallup called it right...

Yes, the size of the sample is always less important than how representative the sample is. I see people comment on how big/small a poll is onTwitter a lot.

Pretty much all of the polling seems to agree though. It might not be a wipeout but the idea that there’s a chance they could win the next election without trying to win back the typical Tory voters and floating voters is for the birds. And at the moment they seem intent on chasing the votes they are losing to reform.

Brexit was always going to kill the Tory party. Hadn’t quite anticipated how many factions it would splinter into and how mad they’d all turn out to be.

Laura K annoyed me again - when she said about losing their deposit in recent by-elections.

Does she not understand that people are voting to get the Tories out - so Lib Dem supporters are often voting Labour and Labour supporters are often voting Lib Dem - just to get the Tories out?

My sister is Labour and she's voting Lib Dem to get the Tories out. Stratford-upon-Avon

I wonder what PMQs will be like this week?

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/02/2024 20:14

I think we’ll need a new thread by then. Especially if this week is anything like last week.

cardibach · 25/02/2024 20:28

Indeed @RafaistheKingofClay !
Talk about a week being a long time in politics…

DuncinToffee · 25/02/2024 21:05

A day is a long time in politics...

New: Big row in the Conservative backbench WhatsApp group tonight. Tory MPs piling in to criticise Tobias Ellwood after he urged John Hayes to delete a message which said “Islamist extremism poses the greatest threat to national security and wellbeing.”

The Tories will have completely imploded if they try to hang on for an October election.

Sunak isn't going to repair this. A bland Hunt budget won't do it. Thankfully the electorate are wise to the Tories now.

DuncinToffee · 25/02/2024 21:19

I think that it might be the same whatsapp grouped mentioned in the Sky article that Rafa linked, the 109group

If they hang together until May it will be a miracle.

Notonthestairs · 25/02/2024 21:23

Not in the least bit surprised by John Hayes. He's repeatedly been referenced as Braverman's mentor. When she broke confidentiality restrictions (and was sacked for it) she was sharing top secret documents with Hayes and his wife.

Leaving the EU has left a bogeyman vacancy for the Conservatives.

It's very obviously a diversion from failings public services, the high costs of housing, energy, childcare etc etc. They can't cut taxes because there isn't the headroom. They've got nothing to offer.

They aren't interested in governing, certainly not interested in uniting the country, or setting out a positive vision, just hanging on to their seats.

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/02/2024 21:36

And we’re talking about Anderson, but there doesn’t seem to be any attempt to suspend Truss or Braverman. Presumably because Rishi is scared and has no backbone.

newnamethanks · 25/02/2024 21:58

They are a bunch of bastards. GE results here last time
CON 28,430
LIB 27,445
LAB 2,723
I'll be voting LibDem. They have to go.

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/02/2024 22:19

I’m fully in support of this proposal.

More leaked WhatsApps. This time calling the suspension of 30p Lee a mistake. Imagine the backlash if this was a leaked Labour MP group.

Depressing stuff.

itsgettingweird · 26/02/2024 04:29

I'll need 5 years off if the Tory's get back in 😳

I have an inkling you’re probably safe.

AdamRyan · 26/02/2024 07:40

I'm wondering why the BBC have got "Sunak under pressure to respond to MP "Islamist" row" as their live topic. Maybe they've been tipped off about something? 🤔
