Andy Burnham spot on. If someone had said "Jews have control of...", they would be called out immediately.

Double standards

cakeorwine · 25/02/2024 09:30

I do like Andy Burnham.

Did dowden genuinely just say that a person can’t be expected to properly hear all points made. During a debate?

I’d argue a person isn’t suited to debates if they’re that incompetent, definitely not publicly and speaking for an entire country.

He did, not very convincingly

Pippa Crerar

Deputy PM Oliver Dowden asked by ⁦@SkyNews⁩ if Suella Braverman's comments that Britain is being taken over by an "islamist mob” were acceptable.

"I don't believe the language used by Suella Braverman has crossed the line, where she should apologise for it, no I don't."

Dowden tells @bbclaurak that he doesn’t think Suella Braverman’s comments “cross the line” in way Lee Anderson’s did.

He “disagrees” with her specific words but agrees with her “underlying sentiment” about threats to MPs.

Dowden declines to say whether he thought Anderson’s comments were Islamophobic - but says he would have kept his role if he apologised.

He adds that he doesn’t think Anderson intended to be Islamophobic - but adds that "words matter” and that they could be seen that way.

So they have 'sacrified' Anderson to protect Truss and Braverman

I wonder which Minister will be on tomorrow - the point from Andy Burnham about what would have happened if other religions had been referenced - should be a key question

DuncinToffee · 25/02/2024 09:53

So they have 'sacrified' Anderson to protect Truss and Braverman

It just doesn’t work though does it. LA faces consequences but two (or more) colleagues talking publically along the same lines, in arguably more inciteful arenas are ignored.

Someone needs to tell Rishi he should have a word with Kier about how to lead a party away from extremism.

I noticed Theresa making sure she brought up antisemitism as much as possible whilst notably steering away from addressing Islamophobia.

DuncinToffee · 25/02/2024 10:11

It keeps going back to that if Anderson had apologised, he would have kept his job.

Piggywaspushed · 25/02/2024 10:18

The Tories really are relying on people believing a)anti Semitism is unique to the Labour party b) Islamophobia doesn't matter nearly as much and is quite an understandable prejudice.

Clearly they don't care at all about the constituencies with large Muslim populations. But we all knew that anyway.

Notonthestairs · 25/02/2024 10:22

They've been forced to draw an imaginary line between Anderson and Braverman/Jenrick/Truss.

But in reality those kind of statements are now regular Conservative discourse.

L1ttledrummergirl · 25/02/2024 10:26

Just watching Kuenssberg.

Therese Coffey justifying Andersons comments- " I don't believe he is racist, I do believe he has concerns"

Oliver Dowden repeating this "I dont believe Lee Anderson was intending to be islamaphobic". Sunaks line is to defend this kind of behaviour.

It's all our fault for taking his words that way, and if he had apologised he would have kept his job.

He's blaming the police for not stopping it. Fuck sake, these things start at the top, they come from government.

He respects what Braverman said about extremists and anti semitic are in charge, but doesn't think that she has crossed a line, although he doesn't agree with the specific word she used. (So he agrees with the sentiment then)

On Truss, deflection again. She didn't hear it.

And they dare to talk about the issues in Labour which Starmer is trying to fix. They have the same issues (just the oppositeview, still extremist), but are fanning the flames!

Sickening.

ilovesooty · 25/02/2024 10:34

I didn't see it but I've read the commentary. So according to Dowden Sunak took "appropriate action to deal with the situation", refused to say that Anderson was islamaphobic and said he would have kept the Whip if he'd apologised. Meanwhile Braverman is A OK and he does the 3 monkeys thing on Truss.

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/02/2024 10:43

So let me get this straight.
The Nat Cons, led by some high profile Tory MPs can hold a conference about the anti-Semitic trope of ‘cultural marxism’
Truss and Braverman can be openly islamophobic all over the media
Lee Anderson can be a massive islamophobic racist on a news channel

And the issues are a) not apologising for being a racist and b) Labour hate Jewish people.

IClaudine · 25/02/2024 10:46

Warsi nails it.

Disturbing mealy mouthed evasive responses by Oliver this morning.
A clear display that anti Muslim racism is tolerated within
@Conservatives
that Muslims are not just fair game but convenient electoral campaign fodder.
When we can’t even call out the obvious, when it’s so blatant and can’t find the words to condemn we have lost all authority on being anti racist.
No ifs no buts no caveats - we rightly don’t allow Labour to acquiesce in antisemitism why do we think we can on Islamophobia
We must end this hierarchy of racism and stop the hypocrisy

Cornettoninja · 25/02/2024 10:48

I fully believe it’s on the conservatives to detail exactly what these sinister, shadowy forces at play are. I bloody hate insinuations, I want it laid out in bullet points, naming names and companies. If this is really such a huge problem they owe it to release public information.

I like Warsi. About time they had her back on Question Time.

So basically Rishi and his advisors have looked at Joe Rogan and thought ‘we can do that’! Fucks sake

IClaudine · 25/02/2024 11:29

Thanks DuncinToffee. A poster on another thread was sounding off about Mark Drakeford refusing to engage with farmers. Now I realise that they were these farmers, so explains a lot!

Do Sunak's team not do any research into who he is meeting?

"He (Sunak) appeared alongside farmer Gareth Wyn Jones and stood next to placards emblazoned with the logo for the campaign “No Farmers No Food”.
Wyn Jones is a leading supporter of the campaign, which was started and is being run by James Melville, a GB News pundit and communications consultant."
Says it all really.

When they talk about shadowy figures they need to start looking closer to home.

But a leaked letter written jointly by health minister Andrew Stephenson and the minister for skills, apprenticeships and higher education, Robert Halfon, to the independent regulator the Office for Students, says they will fund only 350 additional places for trainee doctors in 2025-26. This is less than a quarter of the annual number widely anticipated and there is no guarantee that even that level of resource will be repeated.

There are 9,000 vacancies and -

The average number of doctors per 1,000 people is just 2.9, compared to 4.3 in Germany and an average of 3.7 in the 38 countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Deputy PM silent on whether Lee Anderson's comments Islamophobic - BBC News

The deputy prime minister has declined to say whether Lee Anderson's comments were Islamophobic and said the MP would have kept his job had he apologised.
On Saturday Mr Anderson was suspended as a Conservative MP after refusing to apologise for saying London Mayor Sadiq Khan is controlled by "Islamists".
Oliver Dowden said Mr Anderson was not "intending to be Islamophobic".
Mr Anderson's comments have been widely condemned, including from some Tories.
Speaking to GB News on Friday, Mr Anderson, who presents on the channel, said: "I don't actually believe that the Islamists have got control of our country, but what I do believe is they've got control of Khan and they've got control of London… He's actually given our capital city away to his mates."
Speaking before Mr Anderson was suspended, Mr Khan said the comments were "Islamophobic, anti-Muslim and racist" and that they "pour fuel on the fire of anti-Muslim hatred."

I wonder what Sunak will say?
