So after speaking to ordinary voters, Sunak took a RAF flight home Confused

I noted a lengthy post from the Criminal Bar Association on the topic of Rape & Serious Sexual Assault prosecutors & defence barristers.
The service is being decimated by poor payment and the impact on wellbeing of working in this area.
This can only lead to worse outcomes for victims. They are already waiting years to go to trial.

It feels like these issues are being overlooked- I don't care who tackles it but someone in Government should be taking this seriously and doing something about it.

Excerpt from tweet -

64% of Prosecutors completing our survey said at renewal they will not be reapplying to be on the RASSO List. Only 246 RASSO Prosecutors who completed the survey said they would remain on the List in the future.
•66% of Defence RASSO Counsel said they no longer want to conduct these cases.
•53% of those who conduct Section 28 cross-examination do not want to carry on, with over half of those saying this was down to lack of remuneration for the work involved.
•Overall 6 out of 10 surveyed cited poor fees as the reason for refusing to conduct RASSO cases.
•Half of all those surveyed pointed to poor well-being as the cause for refusing to conduct RASSO cases.

I don’t think we need the 28bn for net zero. Just stopping Rishi flying everywhere would help.

I am sure that there must be a conflict here - Government resources and political work.

He didn't speak to them for too long, I hope? Were they carefully selected?

Thanks for the shiny new thread @DuncinToffee

GBeebies say the audience was independently selected by Survation.

Not totally convinced.

From what sample?

IClaudine · 13/02/2024 21:53

I think people applied to go on and then the audience was selected from those applications.

I wonder what the initial application pool looked like?

IClaudine · 13/02/2024 21:54

So I don't think it was random, even though the process might have been independent! The audience skewed very much to white and middle aged.

I imagine there wasn’t much else to choose from.

cakeorwine · 13/02/2024 22:02

I wonder if Sunak thought it was helpful?
Did they reflect his views?
Was he talking to the right people?

Or was it reinforcing his filter bubble / echo chamber etc?

Flamme · 14/02/2024 00:03

I like his defence of private education - https://twitter.com/Conservatives/status/1757151866545119692

His defence is basically that coughing up Winchester fees is just what every good parent does for their child, right? So if you don't shell out fees currently at £49K a year, you're failing your children. And if it's because you can't because you just don't earn enough, then you just aren't working hard enough and you're a failure all round.

Thanks for new thread Brew

Not sure about GB news, but Question Time was broadcast from my workplace last year and lots of us were excited and filled out the application form to appear in the audience. It asks your political leaning, thoughts on Brexit, who you will vote for in the next GE, your ethnicity etc.

Three left and one right wing colleagues got a golden ticket. One even got his noggin on screen by having a question and Fiona Bruce calling out his name. We were all dead excited...like oooh don't they make (workplace) look nice...not like that in real life!

I like to think there is no bias in the selection. Surely it helps the debate to challenge views? If not, what's the point?

IClaudine · 14/02/2024 08:03

I think the Gbeebies programme audience was supposed to be mostly floating voters?

Notonthestairs · 14/02/2024 08:06

QT audience is chosen to reflect the political leanings of the local constituency.

GB news was probably very different - they have a specific audience in mind.

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/02/2024 10:52

I thought I’d read it was supposed to be floating voters too.

Ofcom are now looking into it. Difficult to see how they could let them get away with it this time but I’m sure they’ll find a way. They had a massive ‘Britain’s election channel’ sign behind the audience ffs.

I would have thought whoever is supposed to oversee elections could look into it too given that it was in the week of 2 by-elections.

Yeah I was just gonna post this from Reuters as I haven't seen it written like this anywhere else:-

https://apple.news/A8dMvq1xVTRyBM1-FwmtVcA

”Britain's opposition Labour Party are on course for a landslide victory at a national election later this year that would surpass Tony Blair's win in 1997, according to a projection published on Wednesday.”

By way of Apple News btw

tobee · 14/02/2024 20:06

Obviously this was before the latest Labour Party stuff

BIossomtoes · 14/02/2024 20:07

That certainly explains the increasing desperation and panic.
