How old are you and how long have you been on Mumsnet?

I'll start... I'm 51 and I've been here 15 years.

I was thinking recently that Mumsnet has got older but maybe that's because I hang about in different corners (Higher Education instead of Pregnancy for example!) or click on threads that are relevant to my life now (pensions anyone?). I love the wide range of life experiences shared in general Chat and even AIBU.

I still remember my first thread when I was pregnant with DD2. Her nuchal scan showed a high risk of Down's and a friend suggested I hop onto Mumsnet for some advice. I was absolutely blown away by the kindness and support I received.

I know some topics can get a bit heated but I do hope newbies today get similarly warm reception.

How long have you been knocking around?

I'm 50 this year and have been here since my son was born so nearly 21 years.

Augustus40 · 08/02/2024 11:54

Since pregnant with ds. Nearly 20 years.

Am 60.

TomatoketchupfromMandS · 08/02/2024 11:54

44 and been on here about 7 years since I started thinking about having DD. I go through phases but spend quite a lot of time on mumsnet & I don’t know any friends in real life (bar one) that do similar. They only access it through Google searches rather than going directly to the site to see what’s trending.

I'm 56 and think I've been here since 2008 when my eldest was born. I know I did a lot of lurking before I signed up, so not exactly sure. Does anyone know how to check? Can't find anything in my settings.

MustBeNapTime · 08/02/2024 11:59

Also 51 and also 15 years!
Randomly change names when I think of something that is currently appropriate...

MustBeNapTime · 08/02/2024 12:00

@ErrolTheDragon

How do you find out your ID number please?

ColdButSunny · 08/02/2024 12:07

49 and around 13 years.

BarbaricPeach · 08/02/2024 12:17

33 and I've been here about 2 years (since I had a child, basically). I've definitely noticed that Mumsnet skews a lot older than I'd have expected.

GailTheSnail · 08/02/2024 12:19

I think about 6 years. Came here for the breastfeeding advice. Stayed for the bun fights

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 08/02/2024 12:19

50, and I've been here since ds was born so 20 years.

cottontail24 · 08/02/2024 12:20
  1. Maybe about 5 or 6 years. I think I would have done things a lot differently in past relationships if I'd been on here earlier.
FastAndLast · 08/02/2024 12:20

44, been here 11/12 years.

IncompleteSenten · 08/02/2024 12:21

50 and since about 2004 I think.

RedRidingGood · 08/02/2024 12:26

Late 30s, and about a year

Sturnidae · 08/02/2024 12:30

34 and 14 years give or take. I joined when I was a nanny as I found the conversation here much better and more straight forward than the other forums. I used to attend the local meet ups in Brighton as well before I moved away, brilliant women from a real range of backgrounds, I learnt a lot from them!

I remember the big flounce of the noughties, and the drama from the invite only forum they set up. And Robin's wedding (I think it was Robin?! Two random MNetters came to be witnesses and one wore some pants on her head!). I remember some of the first woolly hugs blankets coming about and the poster's (or their families) who received them.

sanferryanne · 08/02/2024 12:31

59, and about 9 years.

I was actually put off the site at a time when it would probably have been very useful, when my daughter was young, as we had a local group of mumsnetters meet up informally at my work place every week, and they were the most unpleasant bunch of mean girls, led by a truly toxic queen bee who I once saw reduce someone to tears, with kids so badly behaved that we had to issue a formal warning about their behaviour, that I was really put off. I was then drawn in by the feminism boards, and I'm on here most days!

Ahemhmm · 08/02/2024 12:32

39 and 20 years 😩

OrionStridesIn · 08/02/2024 12:48

35, 12 years, but have deleted my account several times and rejoined.

It does feel like the tone has changed a lot over the years. It's always been a bit spicy but these days arguments happen over the most innocuous things.

There's still an awful lot of good posters and support on here though.

londonmummy1966 · 08/02/2024 12:48

57 and been on here since 2004. I joined as I was told there would be people on here who understood what i was going through with PND and I cried at the kindness I received on my first thread.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/02/2024 12:58

Early 30s 11 years

Arrived for uni research stayed because of tv addicts abiu and the odd penis cup

turkeyboots · 08/02/2024 13:03

Mid 40s, 16 years. I came looking for double buggy advice and am still here.

TheMainCharacter · 08/02/2024 13:04

40’s, 18 years.
Lots of name changes.

In the beginning I used my real name and posted my dc’s names and pictures. Along with a lot of VERY personal
information that my extended family really didn’t need to know 🤦🏻‍♀️I cringe just thinking about it.

TheChosenTwo · 08/02/2024 13:05

Since dc3 was born, they’re 12 now! I’m 38.
i remember when I joined and I saw people saying they’d been here for 10 years and i just thought “why?!” 12 years later and here I still am.
I have times where I’m on here loads and then weeks/months where I barely look but it’s a familiar comfort!

Memba · 08/02/2024 13:06

When I first joined I got so much support from the May 2009 antenatal group - literally thousands of posts, multiple threads... still remember so many of the posters and their stories and am still friends with some on FB.

Looking at the birth clubs now and they don't seem to be as busy as they used to be. Maybe as @Helplessandheartbroke says younger folk are using WhatsApp/Snapchat groups instead?

I'd be interested to know the stats for new signups. Whether the average of MN is increasing as the noughties cohorts get older or whether people are still joining at the same rate? (I love statistics!)
