How old are you and how long have you been on Mumsnet?

I'll start... I'm 51 and I've been here 15 years.

I was thinking recently that Mumsnet has got older but maybe that's because I hang about in different corners (Higher Education instead of Pregnancy for example!) or click on threads that are relevant to my life now (pensions anyone?). I love the wide range of life experiences shared in general Chat and even AIBU.

I still remember my first thread when I was pregnant with DD2. Her nuchal scan showed a high risk of Down's and a friend suggested I hop onto Mumsnet for some advice. I was absolutely blown away by the kindness and support I received.

I know some topics can get a bit heated but I do hope newbies today get similarly warm reception.

How long have you been knocking around?

Hi!

I first tried about 10 years ago when my eldest was small but I struggled a lot with my reading and writing then and felt to intimated to talk really, but I'm sure had I explained in my post that I was limited they'd have not been unkind.

I've got much more confident with my reading and writing skills over the last 5 or so years, so I've popped back and I love it now.

I like seeing users names I recognise come up in threads and feel happy I know of them, even if I don't ever chat directly to them I see them as very sensible and kind to others which I appreciate.

I enjoy mumsnet because its absolutely packed with women I'd never have the opportunity to converse with in real life.

I've been here for 15 years. That makes 14 years since the last time I started an AIBU about something I was feeling sensitive about!

Lovewine1975 · 08/02/2024 10:50

longingtoquit · 08/02/2024 10:51

46 years old been here since 2006

WhatchaLookingAt · 08/02/2024 10:53

About 4 years. I too came across mn when pregnant with dc1. I came across a lovely group in a pregnancy thread, found it very helpful and supportive.

I stay away from the serious or political threads. I’m not on mn to have debates with strangers.

I find the parenting ones useful & mostly like the silly, lighthearted stuff. Also like style & beauty.

I name change every few months or so.

19 years here

I wonder if anyone can beat that! I think MN was founded in 2000 but I seem to recall a big bunch of original posters flounced sometime in the noughties!

So far this is confirming my suspicions about MN getting older. If the average age for first time mums is around 30, where do all the youngsters go for pregnancy advice? TikTok? <shudder>

I've been on here for 19 years too.

MirandaWest · 08/02/2024 10:55

Am 48. Been here just over 20 years

Rarewaxwing · 08/02/2024 10:58

Approx 16 years

I've received invaluable advice and empathy over the years. I didn't know, when I first joined, that both my DC were neurodiverse. Over the years, they've collected an impressive number of diagnoses and fighting for their needs to be met has become normal life for me. It's a comfort to know that there are other parents out there who've been through the same, or similar, things and can share their experiences.

I joined in 2008 I think, so 15/16 years!

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2024 10:59

I'm 63, I think I've been here about 19 years. My id number is only 3 digits.

I was thinking recently that Mumsnet has got older but maybe that's because I hang about in different corners (Higher Education instead of Pregnancy for example!) or click on threads that are relevant to my life now (pensions anyone?).

I think the age range has spread. I find myself more surprised than I should be by mothers on here now in their 20s, some younger than my DD. Back when this started, Internet access and the use of this sort of site wasn't as widespread. People didn't all have smartphones then, or personal computers or have email! So the people who could access MN would tend to be a bit older and more affluent.

OldTinHat · 08/02/2024 11:00

52 and joined when my youngest was a toddler. He's 24 this year.

Murpe · 08/02/2024 11:01

44, since 2008. Came for the TTC and ante-natal stuff, stayed for the rest of it.

TammytheFaceGhost · 08/02/2024 11:01
  1. Been here under a heck of a lot of names. Fairly sure I was pregnant with my 12 year old when I joined.
