Does anyone else feel unnerved by the news about King Charles?

Yes I know this belongs in the Royal section but more traffic here for people feeling like I do.

King Charles has cancer, I am sure William is wondering if he will become King sooner than he anticipated. It makes me wonder too if Kate will be okay due to her recent surgery - William really needs her by his side if he is going to take on the Big Job.

Harry rushing home feels bad to me. I mean, it's good that he is coming to see his dad but it makes me feel as though it's serious - I just hope, hope it's not pancreatic cancer - but I just don't have a good feeling.

The Queen's only been gone 16 months. I feel out of sorts. Anyone else?

No. I don’t know him or his family.
I do feel huge sympathy and a lot of anger for thousands who are ill and dying because they couldn’t get GP and hospital appointments.

Icystars · 06/02/2024 12:42

No I’m not concerned at all. It makes no difference to my life.

It’s sad that someone is ill but he will have the best of the best, treatment wise. If he doesn’t pull through then William will be king.

it won’t be a lot different to what it is now

I am not a dick. He will receive the best care, with no wait, no money worries. Chances are he will be fine in no time. Yes it’s till sad but I will save my sympathy for those who don’t have that.
My friends mum died at 42 of breast cancer, she was working until she physically couldn’t. She had money worries and 3 young children. That was years ago, things are far worse now.

It probably feels unsettling to you as the monarchy are part of the fabric of our society.

its really not good news as reads to me as secondary cancer. They said it was not prostate cancer. That first piece of news was released to soften the blow (PR wise) for the cancer announcement.

The colossal amount of public money that will be spent if the worst happens unnerves me when people are having to rely on food banks to survive.

This!
What unnerves me is that people still doff their caps to these anachronisms.

I feel unsettled by the headlines this week that death rates from cancer in this country are worsening because of delayed diagnosis and treatment thanks to Tory destruction of the NHS. Of course, this doesn't apply to the king, who has the luxury of early detection and immediate treatment.

I feel unsettled by the prospect of the state forking out billions on another state funeral and coronation, should he not recover. As the news comes in that there is a crisis in child health due to the cost of living and the rapidly widening gulf between rich and poor. All the while, infant mortality rises, under-fives suffer poor health and tooth decay and another generation grows up crushed by poverty. But all of us are expected to feel concern over an extraordinarily wealthy and protected family facing illness and loss just as all of us do, safe in the knowledge they'll never have to wait months to see a doctor or have to pull out their own teeth as no dentist is available, or worry about getting paltry sickness benefits to keep a roof over their family's head.

I agree with all of this, and feel despair at the state of this country. Perhaps that's the reason why I feel unnerved - there's not much else to make us feel stable, is there!

He had an operation on his prostate last week and this week they announced cancer. It’s almost certainly prostate cancer which almost all men his age have.

I imagine he will be fully recovered, having received the very best of healthcare, by the summer.
Do you not think these people have access to regular, comprehensive screening programmes?

It's all over the news that it's NOT prostrate cancer, but it was found during the procedure on his prostate.

Yep.

He's 75, has lived a life of luxury at our expense, will get the best of treatments and care all because of an accident of birth in an anachronistic system.

I don't hate him personally or anything but I really don't care if he dies now or lives another 20 years. Him or his son as King makes no real odds to me.

What I'm interested in is how it's going to be Harry and Meghan's fault. Did they possibly send him poisonous flowers? Like the ones the Mail said Meghan had in her wedding bouquet to put Charlotte's life at risk?🤣

IKR. I'm sure they'll find a way. Blame it on the stress of the estrangement maybe.

ilovesooty · 06/02/2024 12:47

heldinadream · 06/02/2024 12:06

No. As a fellow human I sympathise with him and his family. But royalty is an anachronism that we, as a society, need to find a way to do without, and any instabilities it experiences as an institution are really rather meaningless.

Exactly.

I don't see why anyone would be "unnerved".

Attacking Prince Harry for coming home to see his father is horrible.

NerrSnerr · 06/02/2024 12:48

rollonretirementfgs · 06/02/2024 12:27

Harry only rushed back because he would be branded a cold hearted arsehole if he didn't! Everything he does is fir the sake of his reputation and public persona, nothing else

I suppose you know this because you spoke to him do you?

I'm not particularly bothered either way about the Meghan and Harry stuff but it is funny how many people KNOW what they're thinking and why they do things (I think it's because many people have a royal fantasy life running in their head and they struggle to separate their own imagination from real life).

Really? News are saying the cancer has been 'caught quickly'. Think you might be reading too much into it.

Baldieheid · 06/02/2024 12:50

No more than anyone else diagnosed with something awful.

Note how quickly he's started treatment, too. No waiting list for him, huh? Gotta make that lavish coronation spend look worthwhile by having him hang about a bit longer, I suppose....

ChocoChocoLatte · 06/02/2024 12:50

No. As a cancer patient, I'm assured he'll get the very best of care and not worry about slipping through the cracks etc

News reports it's not prostate cancer.

And he's divulged the info to bring cancer into the limelight Hmm

Anyway, he's a man in his 70s who's lived quite the life and his reign was never going to be as long as that of the Queen's.......

Wonder if they can quickly change all the coins to W's image....

I wish him nothing but improved health and decent care, it will undoubtably be better than the rest of us coping with it and all the shit that comes with it.

KeyboardMash · 06/02/2024 12:50

I honestly couldn't give a flying fuck. I mean, I guess I vaguely hope that all the blokes in their seventies who have cancer are okay, because that would be nicer for all of them and their multitudinous anonymous family members. But it absolutely baffles me that apparently sane and intelligent people are genuinely invested in this one very rich old bloke in particular.

NerrSnerr · 06/02/2024 12:51

I hope the journey ahead isn't too traumatic for Charles and his family. I know they have money and the best care but cancer is shit.

We knew that there would be a funeral and cremation relatively close to the Queens (whether it's 2 years or 10 years after it will feel soon after the queen was around for so long).

Ultimately Charles, William and then George will all have a coronation, wedding (or two), and funeral each and they'll all cost £££. They can't really control how close they'll be together can they.

And your evidence? For all we know they talk daily.,

ChocoChocoLatte · 06/02/2024 12:51

Can't believe he's worried about how to cover his heating bills as cancer has stripped him of his ability to 'work'.

At his age, he's too old for PIP

There is a lot of instability right now, but this isn't like the end of the Queen's 70 year reign that bridged so much time and so many changes in the world. I don’t think it makes much difference to anyone whether it's Charles or William on the throne - but I think it will stir up a lot more anger if we have to watch them ride in golden carriages and hold priceless gems so soon after the last time when things have only got worse for the majority. If there is another coronation in the near future, they'll need to consider the extravagance a lot more carefully.

Cheguevarahamster · 06/02/2024 12:52

No . No impact on my life whatsover.

IncompleteSenten · 06/02/2024 12:53

Genuine question.

Do most people have a limited amount of sympathy and concern inside them and so have to choose carefully and 'spend' wisely?

I save my concern / sympathy for...
Why? Are you running low on concern or sympathy and are unable to find a stockist?

I didn't realise it's a finite resource. I've been wasting it feeling sympathy for people in all sorts of situations. I'm now concerned I'm going to run out and then be unable to feel concern or sympathy at all for anyone.

Do you think we get a notification like when the mobile phone battery gets below 15%?

Am I wasting my remaining concern by being concerned about this?

These are important questions, people.

Willmafrockfit · 06/02/2024 12:53

I can't believe the live feed on the guardian website

DoubleTapping · 06/02/2024 12:53

I’m sympathetic and hope he gets better.

But unnerved? No. It makes no difference at all to the public who is in that role. The Queen died, now we have Charles as King, how has that really impacted any of us? It hasn’t. If it passes to William, the same will be true. They have no power and are irrelevant to most people’s lives in terms of impact.

A government change impacts people’s lives, I’m unnerved about the prospect of the Tories winning the next election, I don’t feel that great about Labour getting in either.

Moier · 06/02/2024 12:55

Bladder cancer.
They found it while the camera was looking at his postrate.
Hope he gets the treatment he needs and hopefully get rid of the caner.
