Does anyone else feel unnerved by the news about King Charles?

Yes I know this belongs in the Royal section but more traffic here for people feeling like I do.

King Charles has cancer, I am sure William is wondering if he will become King sooner than he anticipated. It makes me wonder too if Kate will be okay due to her recent surgery - William really needs her by his side if he is going to take on the Big Job.

Harry rushing home feels bad to me. I mean, it's good that he is coming to see his dad but it makes me feel as though it's serious - I just hope, hope it's not pancreatic cancer - but I just don't have a good feeling.

The Queen's only been gone 16 months. I feel out of sorts. Anyone else?

I certainly feel unnerved at the thought that another mega-millions funeral and coronation could be on the horizon.

I’ve had enough of them all now.

DRS1970 · 06/02/2024 12:06

I really don't understand all the fuss to be honest. It is sad he has got cancer, it is sad when anyone gets a cancer. But beyond that I am not seeing why there is all the fuss about it.

No. It won't make any difference if he has a short reign and William has to take over sooner than he expected.
What difference has it made to people's lives since Charles became King? There was so much talk about "when the queen dies"etcetc and people being "unnerved".
She died. A lot of people were sad for a while. Then Charles was crowned. And life goes on exactly the same as before.

I'm sorry he has cancer and hope it can be treated. But that's it. No need for pearl clutching and whatever.

No. I have more respect for William. And as for Kate, she has a lot of help at her disposal...

Why "she"? She is one of two parents. They both have a lot of help.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/02/2024 12:08

Apparently whatever cancer it is (not prostate) has been found early. If it is pancreatic cancer, that is treatable and survivable if found early enough. I know it can be devastatingly quick from diagnosis to death, but this is because it's often not discovered until it's too late. My feeling is he knew there was something wrong and it was attributed to an enlarged prostate but they've investigated and found this cancer, which was probably always a possibility.

Anyway, chances are there will be more information over time.

Bahhumbugintriplicate · 06/02/2024 12:08

No! He’s an elderly man with a common problem. Whilst I wish him well I’m despairing that all other news stops because of this. Last night was ridiculous. Absolutely no local news reported at 6pm. There was nothing more to tell but dozens of different correspondents have to be brought on to give their opinion.
It’s great if it raises awareness but Typical UK media overkill.

I would be very surprised if he had a large expensive funeral.

No.

I am in awe of the news presenters that can talk for hours and hours on such limited information.

I thought that - we’re in Canada and it’s constantly mentioned. Doesn’t affect anyone other than their family. For the rest of us life continues as normal.

TheGoddessFreyja · 06/02/2024 12:08

I don't feel unnerved by it. I feel sad for him and the family to go through this (As I am with any person going through the same) He is a father and a grandfather after all and noone should have to go through this. Cancer just sucks.

I think Charles will step down and allow William to take the throne while he recovers. He is in a very privileged position where I'm sure he will receive the very best treatment to help him either make a recovery or be comfortable if it is untreatable.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 06/02/2024 12:08

Nope!
While it's sad there will have been millions of others diagnosed yesterday too .
Who will have to navigate the nhs and waiting lists ,probably worried about financial loss as they have treatment and possibly it's been found too late after waiting on long waiting lists!
So while it's sad I won't be unsettled but i will wish everyone well x

GoingDownLikeBHS · 06/02/2024 12:09

I feel this is a man who will receive the best possible care, better than most in the UK, with every comfort. He's had a good and interesting life as did his mother, and although I think the Royals have positive benefits for the UK, I never think about them day to day.

SheLovesaCrisp · 06/02/2024 12:09

The only thing that unnerves me is the potential for another massively expensive funeral whilst children go hungry.

His health otherwise, doesn't affect me. I'm more concerned about the many people in my own real life that are suffering with cancer, and my best friend who died of pancreatic cancer in january

Bigdoglittlecat · 06/02/2024 12:10

Do you feel unnerved when any other 75 year old man you don’t know is diagnosed with cancer? I don’t. It makes literally no difference to my life. Sad for him/his family but other than that it’s of no significance.

I have no idea why anyone who wasn’t immediate family would care.

betterangels · 06/02/2024 12:10

He'll get the best care there is. It's sad for the family, though.

I did think yesterday, 'what if there has be another coronation soon?' So much money.

Exactly. If anything, news like this proves how utterly irrelevant the RF are.

Obviously I wish him well as an individual, but whether or not he has a long reign / life has zero impact on my, or pretty much anyone else's, life in the UK in 2024.

Sunnytimesarecoming · 06/02/2024 12:10

In MH services there was a huge influx of calls when the queen died. Of course not all of those people cared deeply about the Queen, it was the idea that something which was a constant for most of our lives was not there anymore. That in itself is unnerving for some. Change is unsettling. Uncertainty is unsettling. You're not abnormal for feeling this way, OP. It's not about King Charles, it's about our own view of what is the natural order of things and what we see as familiar.

Cas112 · 06/02/2024 12:10

OP what direct impact is it going to have on your life?

Stop catastrophising

MuggleMe · 06/02/2024 12:11

When I read the news I imagined Queenie saying what poor form it was to get cancer so soon, considering how she'd managed to sail through decades of reigning til her final days. I'm sure he'll be ok, but I do think he should abdicate.

inkyscribble · 06/02/2024 12:11

I'm not unsettled but I assume he is dying and they've broken protocol to prepare people like you.

Harry didn't come back to see him crowned, I don't believe he'd be coming back now unless it was to say goodbye.

We will know within 6 months. Perhaps six weeks if he's very poorly.

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 06/02/2024 12:11

Are they personal friends of yours? I can't imagine feeling anything about a complete stranger being ill, especially when they will certainly recieve the best treatment money can buy.

I guess its sad for him and the family but my response when I was told was "oh... I don't care"

Harry was at the coronation

He had an operation on his prostate last week and this week they announced cancer. It’s almost certainly prostate cancer which almost all men his age have.

I imagine he will be fully recovered, having received the very best of healthcare, by the summer.
Do you not think these people have access to regular, comprehensive screening programmes?

Said on the news yesterday it wasn't prostate cancer.

Someone pointed out that once Harry knew they had to tell everyone as it would be leaked and I'm quite convinced this is true.

Ouchmyarse · 06/02/2024 12:13

No. I’ve got enough to worry about within my own family, I couldn’t muster a shit over anyone else’s problems, be that Jim who works at Tesco or the King.
