Does anyone else feel unnerved by the news about King Charles?

Yes I know this belongs in the Royal section but more traffic here for people feeling like I do.

King Charles has cancer, I am sure William is wondering if he will become King sooner than he anticipated. It makes me wonder too if Kate will be okay due to her recent surgery - William really needs her by his side if he is going to take on the Big Job.

Harry rushing home feels bad to me. I mean, it's good that he is coming to see his dad but it makes me feel as though it's serious - I just hope, hope it's not pancreatic cancer - but I just don't have a good feeling.

The Queen's only been gone 16 months. I feel out of sorts. Anyone else?

I'm less concerned about this than I am about the real possibility of Trump regaining power. At least Charles doesn't wield any actual power.

SecondUsername4me · 06/02/2024 12:08

I would be very surprised if he had a large expensive funeral.

Well it won't be half a dozen peeps at the local crem, will it?
It won't be large and expensive by previous royal standards, but it'll still be large and expensive.

Nope

inkyscribble · 06/02/2024 12:13

@SecondUsername4me oh yeah. Sorry I forgot he did a flying visit. Fair enough.

I still presume the king doesn't have long left, but he was never going to serve long anyway.

LenaLamont · 06/02/2024 12:13

He waits over 70 years for his job and gets cancer in the first 18 months? Poor old Charlie.

I don’t like him, and am more republican than monarchist, but I do feel sorry for the old fella.

Yes, this!

SecondUsername4me · 06/02/2024 12:16

Imagine if KC says "the government will give the 162million cost of the funeral (cost of his mothers) to charity - 50% will go to food banks and 50% will go to cancer research"

SecondUsername4me · 06/02/2024 12:16

And then he is privately buried at his house

ohdamnitjanet · 06/02/2024 12:17

No. More un-nerved by ordinary people who can’t queue jump or pay for private treatment who may not recover.

MrsAvocet · 06/02/2024 12:17

I feel sad for him, just as I would for anyone receiving a cancer diagnosis, but I have to confess my next thought was for the public purse. The Queen's funeral plus his coronation must have cost a fortune and doing it all again so soon would be very costly, even if subsequent ceremonies were lower key.

IncompleteSenten · 06/02/2024 12:18

No.
He's 75. A lot of people don't make it that far or much further.

It's very sad for his family and friends of course it is, same as with everyone and I have the same level of sympathy as I would for anyone in that situation but do I personally feel unnerved by it?

No. There's nothing that will personally affect me whatever way it goes. He's not more important to me personally than any other stranger but equally he's not less important than other strangers in the same situation just because I'm not a royalist iyswim.

I've seen some people online on different sites practically rejoicing which is very distasteful. No matter how you feel about the monarchy as an institution this is still a human being with people in their life who love them.

inkyscribble · 06/02/2024 12:18

@SecondUsername4me hahahaha as if.

If he were that type of human he would never have had such an exquisitely expensive coronation knowing it unlikely he even serve for a half as long as his mother did.

They do not care about the public purse. His funeral will cost a bomb and then we'll have to pay for Williams coronation while thousands depend on food banks.

TheSnowyOwl · 06/02/2024 12:19

I don’t feel unsettled by it and do feel we aren’t like to have King Charles for long.

The likelihood of it being bladder cancer is quite high given it was likely found during the prostate surgery. However, if it really is early on then the prognosis is very good. Given historically we don’t tend to be given much information, especially regarding severity, by the royal family it’s hard to know if Charles is following this or whether he is being honest.

LurchingTowardsYourFavouriteCity · 06/02/2024 12:20

I feel unsettled by the headlines this week that death rates from cancer in this country are worsening because of delayed diagnosis and treatment thanks to Tory destruction of the NHS. Of course, this doesn't apply to the king, who has the luxury of early detection and immediate treatment.

I feel unsettled by the prospect of the state forking out billions on another state funeral and coronation, should he not recover. As the news comes in that there is a crisis in child health due to the cost of living and the rapidly widening gulf between rich and poor. All the while, infant mortality rises, under-fives suffer poor health and tooth decay and another generation grows up crushed by poverty. But all of us are expected to feel concern over an extraordinarily wealthy and protected family facing illness and loss just as all of us do, safe in the knowledge they'll never have to wait months to see a doctor or have to pull out their own teeth as no dentist is available, or worry about getting paltry sickness benefits to keep a roof over their family's head.

SoupDragon · 06/02/2024 12:21

I feel slightly odd because of the potential for another change of monarch - this was my first change, as it has been for many! It simply want something that crossed my mind.

Also, on a human level, I hope he is OK.

HesterFields · 06/02/2024 12:21

No.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 06/02/2024 12:21

The cost of another funeral and coronation needs not be a significant worry. A coronation especially generates economic activity and boosts the economy.

CakedUpHigh · 06/02/2024 12:21

No. Don't know these people and although I wish them no harm, I couldn't give a shit about them. They're parasites.

👏 👏 absolutely.

clpsmum · 06/02/2024 12:22

I'm more worried about people that don't have access to unlimited money and the best healthcare tbh

Wimpeyspread · 06/02/2024 12:22

No - why would it unnerve me?

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 06/02/2024 12:23

Excellent post @LurchingTowardsYourFavouriteCity (and excellent username)

CurlewKate · 06/02/2024 12:25

What I'm interested in is how it's going to be Harry and Meghan's fault. Did they possibly send him poisonous flowers? Like the ones the Mail said Meghan had in her wedding bouquet to put Charlotte's life at risk?🤣

Puddingpieplum · 06/02/2024 12:25

I'd just hope we wouldn't have to pay for another funeral and coronation. Sure I'm sorry for him, cancer is a bastard, but hardly unheard of for a man of his age.
It makes not a jot of difference to us who the monarch is, why do you care so much?
