Do you wash your hands after a wee in the night?

It’s the middle of the night and you’re up for a wee. (Assume you’ve just dabbed yourself dry with loo roll, no other bodily fluids present!) Do you do a full 30 second soap and water hand wash vs after? A quick water-only rinse, and pat dry? Not wash at all and go straight back to bed? Something else completely?

I’ve often wondered what others do but too afraid to ask in real life 🫢

I piss the bed to save the effort of getting up.

@starfishmummy You wear surgical gloves to have a wee and cover your bedsheets in plastic??????? WTAF

I think @starfishmummy may be making a little joke. A wee joke, you might say.

Aka taking the piss......Grin

Urine is sterile so no harm there, unless you're handling the toilet seat a lot I don't see the big deal to not wash. A lot more bacteria on most door handles etc and people dont wash hands every single time they touch those. But each to their own but I wouldn't put this in the totally disgusting category.

But why is it different at night? By that token it's fine not to bother during the day either?

IDontHateRainbows · 16/01/2024 07:42

As PP has said urine is sterile, until it leaves the body.
Far worse germ wise are when people esp men scratch or touch their genitals in bed and not many would jump up to wash their hands then would they

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 16/01/2024 00:21

I mean theoretically if you change sheets every day

I'm going to regret asking this - but does anyone change their sheets everyday?

It's Mumsnet so some people will say they do.

NashvilleQueen · 16/01/2024 07:51

Well I've managed another night unscathed, my appalling standards of hygiene notwithstanding.

dressedforcomfort · 16/01/2024 07:56

No. My son is noise sensitive due to autism and I'm always really worried about waking him. Tip-toeing like a mouse...

catelynjane · 16/01/2024 07:57

No. Straight back to bed. The longer I'm up in the night, the harder it is for me to get back to sleep!

I haven't died yet Grin

dressedforcomfort · 16/01/2024 07:57

@PlipPlopChoo 😂 just snorted loudly on the train reading that!

emilysquest · 16/01/2024 08:05

Do PP really think that there are germs in your wee?

TooMuchPinkyPonkJuice · 16/01/2024 08:18

Yes. I have a toddler to deal with in the night with often involves stroking her face or finding her dummy, I don't want pissy hands rubbed on my face I'm sure she doesn't either.

Flossflower · 16/01/2024 08:20

As I non washer I am quite surprised by the people who do, considering all the people who sleep with their pets on their beds. The pets don’t wash after going outside.

emilysquest · 16/01/2024 08:21

Who pisses on their hands while having a wee? Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

Waitingfordoggo · 16/01/2024 08:29

I notice a few posters have mentioned bacteria/germs. I am one of the non-washers and I very rarely get ill. I couldn’t tell you the last time I had a stomach bug or virus. Germs are good! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Since this was clearly aimed at me but you chose not to tag or quote me I'll help you out.

Yes you are doing it wrong if you're not washing your hands tbh.

It was obviously a hyperbolic word choice for effect, I don't literally sit and piss on my hands, that was screamingly obvious. But when your wipe urine away from your body there is a chance this will spread to your hands, amongst other bodily fluids and the microbes and bacteria that are present in your genital area. Unless you're not wiping? If you chose to be unhygienic and not wipe then regardless, bathrooms in general are a hotbed for germs and washing hands is very important.

Are you really saying it's ok to use the bathroom then touch something that will be inserted into a child's mouth?

You also asked if people really believe germs are in urine. Yes, there are. It is not sterile, it is a long perpetuated myth.

There are many other articles the ncbi can offer you too.

YES. I breastfeed, so I wash my hands incessantly.

God I thought I was a bit germophobic, I am one of those people who always carried hand sanitiser long before Covid and who still has a sanitiser pump in the hallway to this day. But this thread is crazy! Washing hands with soap and water after a night time wee? What do you think will happen if you don't?

How is it any different to a daytime wee?

baldpenguine · 16/01/2024 08:53

@DewHopper always Grin

I can’t believe how many people don’t wash their hands! This confirms for me that people are always dirtier than I expect them to be.

Same

Its shocking. Its natural to wash your hands after going to the loo, no?!!!! Obviously not. Makes me feel quite sick. I hope they don't work with food.

Delatron · 16/01/2024 09:11

Yes I’m sure lots do get up and work with food in the middle of the night..

Or do you think most people shower and wash their hands in the morning before leaving for the day?

lapochette · 16/01/2024 09:13

Yes of course

Grin Where does anyone on this thread say that they don't wash their hands before touching food?

If you are weeing at home, and are female so not touching any body parts, what risk is there to having a wee overnight and not washing your hands?

Thecatmaster · 16/01/2024 09:23

"Where does anyone on this thread say that they don't wash their hands before touching food?"

I wouldn't put it past half of them to be fair! 🤣
