Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

Get some medical advice ASAP. Don't ignore the poo. Ring NHS 24 at least. Good luck

lucylulululu · 13/01/2024 23:09

Hope you're okay OP and you're in the best place. Hoping things improve asap for you 💐

WingingItSince1973 · 13/01/2024 23:10

Oh OP no wonder you felt so so poorly. Glad you're getting the help and hope for a swift recovery ❤️‍🩹

Winter41 · 13/01/2024 23:22

I'm so glad you went. I was just coming in here to say 'feels like you are going to die' is ont he lost for sepsis symptoms. Great that you acted and are getting treatment. I wish you a speedy recovery

Ivyiris · 13/01/2024 23:27

Hope you are on the mend soon op take care

Princesspollyyy · 13/01/2024 23:28

So glad you went to A&E. feeling like you are dying is a symptom of sepsis, and black stools indicates internal bleeding, as others have said. X

Longdarkcloud · 13/01/2024 23:36

Hope you make a quick recovery OP. I hope you’ll soon be posting to tell us you feel so much better.

LuluBlakey1 · 13/01/2024 23:41

Glad to hear you are in the hospital and, I hope, being properly looked after. Very best wishes xx

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 13/01/2024 23:42

Sorry to hear and hope you feel better.

I hope your mum (as a GP receptionist) learns a lesson from this… bit scary to think they are not trained to pick up on such serious symptoms and advise people to call 111. My mum would have been dragging me to A&E!

Not even staff are allowed in a hospital with D +V, they are told to stay away.
Keep hydrated and speak to a GP or NHS helpline if it continues

And if she had listened to the posters like you, she might not have made it until morning. Armchair doctors, especially those who act like they "are in the know" are more a danger than D&V in an A&E.
People post because they are unsure and because they don't want "to bother A&E". They need support and sound advice (like the posters who said being dehydrated too long and the black stools are signs to be seen) and not the Google Diagnostic Team telling them they are fine.
MN can be a dangerous place sometimes.

Hi all, I’m at A and E being treated for internal bleeding and suspected sepsis. My heart rate was 48 and is usually in the 90’s as I’m quite unfit (and a bit overweight). Blood pressure very low. Temp is really low.

thanks for all your advice- I just want to say that the person who said (and I see this a lot of these type of threads) that if you’re well enough to post on Mumsnet then you’re not ill enough for hospital- it simply isn’t true and quite dangerous to say!

Bloody hell OP, thank goodness you went to A&E.

When I read your post about black poo and a burning stomach I was wondering whether you might have a stomach ulcer. I have chronic gastritis and have recently had a stomach ulcer which presented similarly, bar the vomiting.

I completely agree with your last paragraph. I posted on here from my HDU hospital bed where I was being treat for sepsis, postpartum hemorrhage and iGAS disease (in 2019) and some idiot said I couldn't have sepsis if I was posting on mumsnet.

You are in the right place and they will take good care of you. You'll be in my thoughts.

IheartNiles · 13/01/2024 23:51

A&E now!!!
Black tar stools are likely stomach bleed. I also don’t like the feeling that you’re dying, looking pale and still vomiting after 3 days.

namechange59482 · 13/01/2024 23:53

Gosh OP wishing you a speedy recovery

Grammarnut · 13/01/2024 23:55

Go to A and E. Black pooh means there is possibly blood. You will not be wasting anyone's time.

Ulysees · 13/01/2024 23:56

Thank goodness you're being seen. Get well soon 🙏

FloofyKat · 13/01/2024 23:56

Soinds like you are in the best place, hope you are soon sorted and back home feeling better!

She's being treated in hospital for internal bleeding and suspected sepsis. You didn't RTFT.

PeopleAreWeird · 13/01/2024 23:57

@PissPotPourri Lucky she didnt listen to you and people like you!!!!!!!

DO NOT TELL PEOPLE TO NOT GO TO A&E

daisybe · 13/01/2024 23:57

Deffo ring 111.
My partner and myself have used it and it was much better than wasting 4 hours sitting in a waiting room!

On one occasion they actually decided my partner needed to go to hospital so they booked him a 'slot' so he didn't need to wait.
In my case, I spoke to someone, and then had a call back from a doctor a few hours later, by which point I was a bit better anyway.

I second lucozade and also diaoralite (sp?) Those sachets of salts, usually blackcurrant flavour that you drink down to replace what your body needs.

Small sips.
When that sick I tend to just order stuff off amazon grocery delivery so I don't need to leave the house. Or those deliveroo/uber/getir etc supermarket shops that are delivered same day.

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/01/2024 23:59

I hope everything is okay. I wondered whether it was a stomach ulcer. Have you been having indigestion for a while?

PeopleAreWeird · 14/01/2024 00:02

@BunnyBunnyJabberJabber
Really ? Really?????

LUCKY SHE DIDNT LISTEN TO YOU! SHE COULD OF DIED!!!!!

LaurieStrode · 14/01/2024 00:02

Hope you feel better soon! 💐

Itwasafterallallaboutme · 14/01/2024 00:12

I have just seen this thread and have nothing to add to all the great advice you were given to ring 111. Well done to all of those caring and sensible Mumsnetters!

But to those people who not only always say no to a Mumsnetter going to A&E, but to the ones who have only ever said "no" one time to a Mumsnetter asking for advice about whether they should go to A&E or not, there should always be only one of two pieces of advice that you give to an anonymous stranger on the Internet, which is

Either:

Ring 111 now
or
Go to A&E now.

Even the best A&E doctor in the world cannot diagnose someone over the Internet - although to be fair they would have the best chance of getting it right...

@Doormouse46 I am so glad that you followed the great advice given to you here, and that you were not dissuaded by those ignorant ones telling you not to ring or go to A&E. I hope, and am praying, that you recover really quickly now. 🙏🩷

They are actually asking at our hospital that you don’t go in with a sickness bug.
