Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

@Iwishiwasasilentnight had some paracetmol, some water and tried some food. I’ve also made camp in the loo with my laptop, blanket and kinda half trying food but bringing it up. I’ve been sipping water but that doesn’t help stop the sickness

Definitely ring 111 due to the black poo. If you haven’t have a wee in 12 hours go to A and E. Don’t try to eat, just have tiny sips of water but diortyle is better.

HappyHamsters · 13/01/2024 18:26

Is your poo black and shiny, it can be a sign of an ulcer so I would seek medical advice, might be gastritis or something but am not a doctor, hope you feel better soon.

AndSoFinally · 13/01/2024 18:27

The black poo could be down to a Mallory-Weiss tear from all the vomiting or it could be something more serious. 111 will likely tell you to go to ED (or it will if they follow the right pathway, but with multiple symptoms that isn't always guaranteed)

Karwomannghia · 13/01/2024 18:28

yes ring 111

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:34

Will ring 111 thank you.

111 or urgent care if you have one locally - step down from A&E but can treat and prescribe for a multitude of ailments. 111 may advise to go to UC or A&E - follow their advice.

hope you feel better soon

mrsbyers · 13/01/2024 18:50

Last thing you need is to drink plain water at the moment as you’re already very dehydrated you need to be sipping double strength diahoralite as all water will do is flush even more salts away. I’ve got quite bad kidney disease now from dehydration so I would recommend you go to a&e for IV fluids before it gets worse

Mugcake · 13/01/2024 18:54

Flat coke/lemonade works wonders when you can't keep down water. Dioralyte might also be a good one to rehydrate you (obviously see what 111 say first)

littleblackcat27 · 13/01/2024 18:55

I would second this opinion, particularly if you haven't urinated in the last 24 hours. You need to be seen urgently.

I work in a dialysis unit, and have had a patient who developed renal failure after having a bad lot of D and V for more than 4 days -

Kellioo · 13/01/2024 18:56

I think you'll be sent to a&e with those symptoms. If you can take a stool sample, just an old well sealed Tupperware will do.

ShinyBandana · 13/01/2024 18:56

I think you should go to A&E. severe dehydration is serious and an emergency condition

devildeepbluesea · 13/01/2024 18:58

Agree with more recent PP. I think you need to be seen.

Mynewnameis · 13/01/2024 18:59

Ring 111. A&e will be hell for you. Out of hours is best bet.

This - 3 days is a hell of a long time not to keep anything down abd you sound dehydrated

you need diahorilate or I use lemonade as well

JadeVS72 · 13/01/2024 19:00

Good luck OP! I was going to ask if you have been urinating? I had some kind of vomiting tummy upset when I was 20 and I didn't wee for about 20 hours and decided I was dying- felt dreadful couldn't keep liquid down at all and so dehydrated. I went to a&e and they admitted me and put me on a drip which helped loads. I ended up discharging myself before they decided what was wrong but I was feeling so much better by then!
Hope 111 can help you!

PeopleAreWeird · 13/01/2024 19:05

A&E ! This evening !!!!

onthetrainsomewhere · 13/01/2024 20:09

If you have black stool then skip 111 and go to A&E right now. Especially if you have a burning feeling in your stomach. It is a serious sign of bleeding in the GI tract. Seriously - go now.

Hi all, I’m at A and E being treated for internal bleeding and suspected sepsis. My heart rate was 48 and is usually in the 90’s as I’m quite unfit (and a bit overweight). Blood pressure very low. Temp is really low.

thanks for all your advice- I just want to say that the person who said (and I see this a lot of these type of threads) that if you’re well enough to post on Mumsnet then you’re not ill enough for hospital- it simply isn’t true and quite dangerous to say!

UsernameChangerRanger · 13/01/2024 21:34

nocoolnamesleft · 13/01/2024 21:38

Only just seen this thread, but really glad you went to hospital. Black poo is internal bleeding until proved otherwise.

Pearl97 · 13/01/2024 21:39

Il really glad you’re getting medical help. Thinking of you, please keep us updated.

lochmaree · 13/01/2024 21:41
