Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

And if op had listened to you she could have had catastrophic problems overnight.

DO NOT GIVE OUT MEDICAL ADVICE IF YOU’VE GOT NO FUCKING IDEA WHAT YOU ARE ON ABOUT.

Sorry for shouting but people like this wind me up.

I probably wouldn’t go to a&e as I would want to be be near my own toilet! I would also stop trying to eat anything and drink lucozade very slowly in very small sips as this will replace ions etc that you’ve lost.

lucozade is no good anymore as it has artificial sweeteners rather than sugar

Mariposistaa · 13/01/2024 21:50

Strawberries was a really bad idea - way too acidic.

reflecting2023 · 13/01/2024 21:54

Black stool means bleeding from stomach or duodenum. You need to see a Dr asap.

ActDottie · 13/01/2024 21:55

They advise women with severe morning sickness to go to a&e to get hydrated on a drip. I know it’s a bug not morning sickness but I’d assume the same logic around hydration applies so I think if you’re really dehydrated I’d go.

reflecting2023 · 13/01/2024 21:55

Oh sorry didn't read it all. Get well soon let us know how you get on :)

Carston · 13/01/2024 22:03

OP I hope you make a swift recovery.

Really shocking how many people didn’t know that black poo is a sign of internal bleeding and should be investigated. Perhaps there is some way to get the message out there. This thread is a good start.

Boomboom22 · 13/01/2024 22:10

Black poo should always be checked.
BTW not lucozade or Pepsi anymore, coca cola if you haven't got diorylte (sp?)

Hi all, I’m at A and E being treated for internal bleeding and suspected sepsis. My heart rate was 48 and is usually in the 90’s as I’m quite unfit (and a bit overweight). Blood pressure very low. Temp is really low.

thanks for all your advice- I just want to say that the person who said (and I see this a lot of these type of threads) that if you’re well enough to post on Mumsnet then you’re not ill enough for hospital- it simply isn’t true and quite dangerous to say!

Thank you for updating! I hope you recover speedily. Glad they caught the sepsis and the bleed!

Boonmoon · 13/01/2024 22:15

So glad to hear you called 111! I was going to say the black poo is a real concern and also the ‘feels like I’m dying’ I’ve heard is an indicator of sepsis!

NappiesAndBunFluff · 13/01/2024 22:16

Really glad you went to a and e. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery

Batshitcrazy007 · 13/01/2024 22:17

SamPoodle123 · 13/01/2024 22:25

try sucking on ice chips....if you manage that dyrolyte (to replenish electrolytes lost).

SamPoodle123 · 13/01/2024 22:27

Yikes, just read your last post and wanted to also add that good thing you went to a&e.....sepsis is super dangerous. I hope you feel better soon.

Goatymum · 13/01/2024 22:28

@Doormouse46 - I hope you’re getting the treatment you need now & glad you went.

platinumplus · 13/01/2024 22:28

Sorry to hear this - just popped on to say to get seen re the poo colour, but I see you've made it to hospital. Hope you feel better soon xx

Sebsaloysius · 13/01/2024 22:33

Golly, poor you but thank goodness you did the right thing. and wishing you a fast recovery.

The poster who said "feeling like your dying is a fairly serious symptom" is so right. Sometimes you just know that all is not well, always trust your gut instinct!

BlingBlingTing · 13/01/2024 22:35

Very sensible to go to a&e, I hope things are resolved quickly

Glad you have been seen, I will never give advice on these threads and this has just proved why that’s the right decision for me because I never would have known black poo was so serious.
