Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

Glad you are being treated now - sepsis is not the best thing to have and can be very dangerous - at least they can keep an eye on you properly.
Hope you recover soon.

I'm really glad you went to A&E and I hope you're feeling better very soon

Thecatmaster · 13/01/2024 22:42

Glad that you're in A&E. I was actually going to suggest Sepsis as a possibility. My husband nearly died from it. He had full on septic shock and ended up on life support in a coma. A common symptom is constant vomiting and diarrhea, along with extreme fatigue and muscle pain, fever, and a sunburnt skin look. Finally a pinprick rash before he collapsed. He felt as though he was going to die. 111 saved his life too. It's a pretty good and thorough system.

Black poo should always be checked.
BTW not lucozade or Pepsi anymore, coca cola if you haven't got diorylte (sp?)

And a spoonful of sugar makes it flat. (Advice given to me by my GP for DS when he had diarrhea)

MassiveOvaryaction · 13/01/2024 22:44

I tend to advise anyone who doesn't want to make a fuss/is worried about wasting time to get seen asap as they're usually the ones that need it most!

Glad you went in @Doormouse46 Hope you get sorted quickly and feel much better soon Flowers

Sarah2891 · 13/01/2024 22:45

Thank goodness you went to hospital. Get well soon!

Noseybookworm · 13/01/2024 22:48

I'd definitely ring 111 for advice. Dehydration can get serious if you can't keep anything down.

therealcookiemonster · 13/01/2024 22:52

@Doormouse46 OP intensive care doctor here. if you have black tarry stool, you need to go to a&e straight away, you may be bleeding from your stomach (possibly due to the vomiting).

either way, it can be extremely serious. don't wait. and the first thing you mention should be i have black tarry stool.

please don't wait. just go now. don't drive yourself. take a taxi or get someone to drive you.

therealcookiemonster · 13/01/2024 22:52

ooops should have read all the posts before posting. glad you are in hospital.

Noseybookworm · 13/01/2024 22:53

Not even staff are allowed in a hospital with D +V, they are told to stay away.
Keep hydrated and speak to a GP or NHS helpline if it continues

ReadingSoManyThreads · 13/01/2024 22:57

Only just seen this post and I'm so glad to hear you're in A&E, those symptoms sounded really concerning and it's very concerning that so many people were telling you not to go to A&E!!

I really hope you'll be ok. If you're able to, please let us know how you are tomorrow. Get well soon x

Did you not read her symptoms?? She's in A&E with suspected internal bleeding and sepsis. She NEEDED to get to A&E and thank goodness she went, despite the ridiculous comments on here of not to go!

of course they arent allowed to knowingly go in with D&V because it comprises the safety of patients. It doesn't mean nobody with D and/or V should ever go into hospital, otherwise it would rule out a hell of a lot of people.

You really should read OP's updates before posting - OP has internal bleeding and sepsis - your "advice" could have been fatal to her

Vinrouge4 · 13/01/2024 23:05

You definitely made the right call. Keep us updated.

fourelementary · 13/01/2024 23:06

Shame her mum who works as a GP receptionist doesn’t know black stools are bad…

@Doormouse46 hope you’re on the mend (and on the good meds!) soon and make a full recovery

Justia · 13/01/2024 23:06

Oh just seen the update! Sorry I was late to the thread, glad I didn’t give crap advice.

Hope you recover quickly OP 💐
