Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

Thank goodness you went. It was the feeling like you’re going to die comment that rang alarm bells for me. Plus if you’re not passing urine both sound like possible sepsis. You’re in the right place for sure. I hope they soon have everything under control and you feel much better very soon.

CockSpadget · 14/01/2024 00:38

Ffs, why do so many people take it upon themselves to be the gatekeepers of A&E. OP was/is seriously ill, she hadnt just come on here with a sore throat, or a few hours of run of the mill D&V.
How many of you who said no A&E have ever had or have watched a family member go through 3 days of being unable to eat or drink without vomiting it straight back up, 24 hours without having a wee, vile smelling black tarry stools and being extremely pale while also feeling you are dying. I’m guessing not many of you, so stop giving ridiculous advice like it’s a normal occurrence!

porridgeisbae · 14/01/2024 00:40

Wow OP so sorry to hear your update. Good call to go in. Get well soon. xx

CockSpadget · 14/01/2024 00:40

Oh and wishing you a speedy recovery OP, really hope you are feeling better soon.

Passthepickle · 14/01/2024 00:52

OP I was so pleased to see posters encouraging hospital and I hope that you are feeling better soon. Black poo, dehydration, feeling like you are seriously ill are all so serious. I hope the right treatment sees you doing much better quickly.

FlamingoFloss · 14/01/2024 01:03

Get better soon op

porridgeisbae · 14/01/2024 01:08

Ffs, why do so many people take it upon themselves to be the gatekeepers of A&E

People used to go in with, like, virtually a paper cut on their finger, but I think it's swung the other way now and some people who should go, don't.

Oldsu · 14/01/2024 01:13

Glad you are in hospital I was going to explain about what happened to me but did not want to scare you, I had diarrhoea for two weeks I had been to my GP first of all I was told it was due to me having antibiotics for a chest infection - that made sense but I still had it a week later and was told it was a virus by the Wednesday of the third week I was so weak I could hardly move and sorry if its TMI but I was just passing brown water, DH took me to A&E and stupidly told the triage nurse he thought I should see someone from gastroenterology, well that was that we are accused to trying to see a specialist 'through the back door' the nurse refused to let me even see a Dr just basically kicked us out, I managed to get an emergency appt with the GP surgery nurse the next day who called in the GP he was the same one who said I had a virus less than a week before, I have never forgotten the look on his face when he saw me he looked shocked, sent me back to A&E with a letter and yes it was SEPSIS I was in hospital for 12 days 11 of which were in isolation, apparently if I had been left for much longer I could have died - GET BETTER SOON

PeopleAreWeird · 14/01/2024 01:41

A 3 day vomiting bug made me seriously ill
I also felt like i was dying, it felt as if my organs were packing up but felt so ill i just wanted to sleep and not go to the hospital. By the time my partner carried / dragged me out the house and into hospital i was so ill the dr said if i had gone to sleep that night i would of died

Not everyone is the same

Any kind of bug for someone could be deadly- Never tell anyone they shouldn't go to A&E , its potentially very dangerous

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 14/01/2024 01:43

You're in the best place now.

Ialwaystry · 14/01/2024 02:10

Don't want to worry you but black poo cam mesn internal/stomach bleeding.
Please call 111

WearyAuldWumman · 14/01/2024 02:25

If your poo is black, you might have a stomach ulcer. (Might also explain the throwing up?) You need medical attention.

Phone for help.

ETA

Ah. I see that you're now getting help. Good.

Please call 111

OP has been admitted with gastric bleeding.

Doormouse46 · 14/01/2024 03:42

Thank you all. I’m waiting to be admitted on the ward but it’s a few hours wait for a bed. I have peritonitis caused by a burst stomach ulcer which has gone septic.

Bloody hell OP, you poor thing. I hope they can start treatment and get you comfortable asap.

PeopleAreWeird · 14/01/2024 03:45

Hope you feel better soon

porridgecake · 14/01/2024 03:47

Always ring 111. GP receptionists are not qualified, even if they are your mum. The NHS website is very good for symptom checking.

hombu · 14/01/2024 03:56

Glad you are in the right place, and I hope they get you sorted out and you feel better soon.

hombu · 14/01/2024 04:05

Sorry just seen your update - that does sound nasty! Hopefully a strong course of the right antibiotics will be all you need, or if not, whatever treatment you need you get quickly.

tobee · 14/01/2024 04:18

Thinking of you op!

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/01/2024 04:33

Thank goodness you are in. Only just seen this and my first thought was "black sticky poo ........ get checked for internal bleeding".

I agree that sometimes MN is a bit "Unless you have lost a limb, dont waste NHS time", but thats exactly what 111 is for, to assess how serious it is! A ruptured stomach ulcer almost killed my grandfather (in a very similar way to how it presented with you), and after his treatement he was a different man. He had no idea how terrible her felt until her didnt feel terrible anymore. It was lovely to see him be the wonderful grandfather to his great grandkids he wasnt to us, because he felt like shit all the time.

Wishing you a speedy recovery Flowers

oakleaffy · 14/01/2024 04:45

@Doormouse46 Glad you are being treated.Really hope you are feeling better soon . How frightening for you...Please update if you can and have the battery power and willpower to do so. 👍
