Who would it be? I always thought Belle from Beauty and the Beast would have been hands down Anne Hathaway although I realise she was probably out of the age range

Currently thinking of others because it's Saturday afternoon and I'm bored

OP posts:

Re Andi McDowell in 4WAAF, I agree, she seems quite cold and unlikeable rather than the very confident woman I think they were going for. I read somewhere once their top pick would have been Marissa Tomei for the part, who I think would have been perfect. I actually really liked AMcD in Groundhog Day mind you.

OP, Belle was my first thought when I read your thread title, thought EW was awful for the part, but I would have had Lily Collins as Belle.

Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3. So dreadful compared to amazing actors in it. Any other actor would have been better than her

Nepo in it's purest form! Ditto her cousin N Coppola Cage in most things, although he is very funny at timss.

AllIsWellish · 14/01/2024 15:11

I like JB in the holiday , actually I like him in everything!

Michelle Pfeiffer is easy on the eye but embarrassing as Cat Wiman.

She was amazing as cat woman!

Wasn't she cast at the very last minute for some reason?! I'm sure I heard recently about that

Wolf Hall - ditch Mark 'wet spaniel' Rylance and replace with David Morrisey

Or Daniel Craig!

108Anj · 14/01/2024 15:35

It would have to be Jane (Susannah Harker) in the BBC series Pride and Prejudice. Also Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby-Ashe) in BBC series North and South

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 14/01/2024 16:08

Always difficult with a film of a book as you picture the characters when you read and they are never as in your imagination .

Ilovemyshed · 14/01/2024 16:32

Personally, I cannot stand Kate Beckinsale in Serendipity.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 14/01/2024 18:48

@FloofCloud such an odd choice for a fluffy rom com!

@AllIsWellish see people either like him or don't. Jack Black plays Jack Black in various degrees in everything. So you like him in them all or you dislike him in them all!

Replace Jack Black in The Holiday. There about a billion other actors who could be warm and gently comedic but also a believable romantic pairing with Kate Winslet.

Yes this!

I would replace Thomas Brodie-Sangster in The Queen's Gambit as he still looks about 12. Looks like he had raided a grown-up's dressing up box for that cowboy hat. Not sure who I would replace him with, though.

Yes he does, I thought the same.

Michiru · 14/01/2024 22:48

Many of the Harry Potter cast did not match the physical descriptions of the characters in the books.

Alan Rickman was too old and too broad-shouldered.
Maggie Smith's hair was all wrong.
Gary Oldman was too old, and everything about his physical appearance was wrong - tattoos, hair, body shape.
Daniel Radcliffe was too neat-looking as well as too healthy-looking.
Emma Watson was too pretty.
Conversely, both David Tennant and Timothy Spall were too exaggerated (the former more in manners than looks). Come to think of it, so was Emma Thompson.
Warwick Davis looked the role before they for some reason decided to de-age him.

Spoiled the films for me, really.

George Clooney as Batman. Russell Crowe in Les Mis.

Also not films but two castings that annoy me immensely and ruin a brilliant series are Mike in Ghosts and Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock in Elementary.

Oh no! I really like Jonny Lee Miller in Elementary. I think he does a great job.
Though the closest Sherlock to the books is Jeremy Brett in my opinion.

Harry Potter... although Alan Rickman is great as Snape, I'd preferred them to have used an actor of the correct age. Par of the tragedy of the story is how young the parents are.

Yes, Alan Rickman twenty-odd years younger would have been ideal.

I'd also recast Dumbledore. Didn't mind Michael Gambon but thought Richard Harris was awful (always thought he was overrated in other films, too). How anyone could muck up "Alas! Earwax!" I don't know. Such a pity Ian McKellen was all wizarded out.

I'd also have recast everyone in Interview with the Vampire, though I don't think anyone could have saved it - I hated the book and the film was no better.

DeeCeeCherry · 15/01/2024 01:26

Not a film a series but, Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton. The over-acting is jarring and she doesn't suit the part anyway. Not sure who I'd replace her with tho.

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter = all the personality of an oak tree. Charisma-free. His parents must have been mates with the casting director otherwise, how on earth did he land that part? They'd have been better off giving the part to Ron Weasley really

Jeezypeepers · 15/01/2024 01:36

@sprigatito I had to google her as couldn't put that name to a face, but now I realise I know who she is I agree with you! 😁

Or you love him in School of Rock and High Fidelity but cringe at him as a romantic leading man in The Holiday (as I do)

RichardMarxisinnocent · 15/01/2024 07:48

Going back a bit, but Gregory Peck is absolutely not Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus is older, bearded and less handsome.

108Anj · 15/01/2024 10:37

I think the woman who plays Marian in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was a bit of a letdown. Can't put my finger on why. Much preferred the series Robin of Sherwood with Judi Trott and Michael Praed - she had such an ethereal beauty and grace, and he didn't have an American accent!
Can't abide Eddie Redmayne in anything other than the Stephen Hawking thing - his frozen-fish face, weirdly angled gaze and tendency to lean over in a strange way.
Also, don't like Uma Thurmann in anything at all. She has a scary look.

Wasn’t keen on the actress who played Daphne. She wasn’t feisty enough.

Darklane · 15/01/2024 20:36

Julie Andrews was first choice to play the lead in My Fair Lady but she was already contracted for another film.
Think she’d a have been so much better than Audrey Hepburn who’s cockney accent was dreadful & who’s singing voice had to be dubbed by someone else.

Darklane · 15/01/2024 20:45

Tom Conti made a terrible Greek in Shirley Valentine

BibbleandSqwauk · 15/01/2024 20:50

Russel Crowe as Javert. The acting was fine but the singing??? Appalling.

StuckintheRutt · 15/01/2024 20:51

A Goodyear.

Russel crow is absolutely awful in the lead part.
