If you could recast anyone in a film...

Who would it be? I always thought Belle from Beauty and the Beast would have been hands down Anne Hathaway although I realise she was probably out of the age range

Currently thinking of others because it's Saturday afternoon and I'm bored

Florence Pugh in little women, she was great when the character is older but it doesn't work having a 22 year old play 12.
They all felt too old at the beginning but Amy is the most jarring

I know it’s not the film version of Pride and Prejudice but I cannot bear Alison Steadman as Mrs Bennet. I love the remainder of the cast (although never quite convinced by Jane’s famous beauty) but Mrs Bennet is just dire.

Weirdly Susannah Harker looked so much better I think with any other hairstyle!

I do think that Susannah Harker has a very classical beauty that worked for the period of the film.

Another vote for Andie McDowell. She is absolutely appalling in everything she is in! Worst actress ever!

AyeRightYeAre · 13/01/2024 17:12

Hayden Christensen in the Star Wars prequels

Tom Cruises in the Jack Reacher films

Harry Potter... although Alan Rickman is great as Snape, I'd preferred them to have used an actor of the correct age. Par of the tragedy of the story is how young the parents are.

I'd never clicked that before. Of course you are completely right.

Replace Jack Black in The Holiday. There about a billion other actors who could be warm and gently comedic but also a believable romantic pairing with Kate Winslet.

Agreed! He came across as creepy - that odd thing he kept doing with his eyes. DH and me hate-watch that film 😂😂

HRTQueen · 13/01/2024 17:15

Another for Andi MacDowell in Four Weddings. It’s a great film every other actor is so well cast

I think Sarah Jessica Parker would have been good for the role

Andi MacDowell in 4 Weddings.

You could replace her with a cricket bat and it would be less wooden.

(I liked Emma Watson and Renee Zellweger, by the way)

Yes. In fact, Andi MacDowell in any film she is in!

BassoContinuo · 13/01/2024 17:20

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables replaced by someone who could actually sing.

Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia for the same reason! Although that is at least a comedy so slightly more bearable.

I'd 100% recast Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey - and Dakota Johnson as Ana Steele for that matter!

Not sure who I'd replace with but I thought both were poor choices. (And yes, I know the film's were rubbish lol)

Came to say the same! Jamie Dornan has shown in films and tv since, he is a great actor so was just not the right vehicle for him.

tsmainsqueeze · 13/01/2024 17:22

Tom Hardy -who i think is a good actor - as Heathcliff , acted in the style of Bernard Bresslaw from the carry on films.

starsinthenightskies · 13/01/2024 17:23

I agree Anne Hathaway would have been good in Beauty and the Beast. I do like her in most films, but I would definitely recast her in One Day. Her accent completely ruined that film.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/01/2024 17:24

Posters mentioning the cast of the Harry Potter films - very difficult when they were all cast as 11 year olds.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/01/2024 17:25

Harry, Ron and Hermione I mean - not Snape!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/01/2024 17:28

Wolf Hall - ditch Mark 'wet spaniel' Rylance and replace with David Morrisey

Thorinfling · 13/01/2024 17:28

I rewatched an old film about Jack the Ripper the other day called From Hell.
Heather Graham as Mary Kelly was just shocking. Half a level above the Dick Van Dyke cockney accent.

I've never quite understood why they put actors in roles in which they demonstrably can't do the accent. There are plenty of English/American/Scottish/Irish/Australian etc. actors that could do the roles in their own accent!

Sharlto Copley in Maleficent is another one!

MillicentRogers · 13/01/2024 17:29

Lassie should have been played by an XL Bully.

MillicentRogers · 13/01/2024 17:30

Michelle Pfeiffer is easy on the eye but embarrassing as Cat Wiman.

Gettingittogether · 13/01/2024 17:35

Leo DiCaprio in Titanic.

He's an excellent actor but I couldn't get behind him and Kate as a couple in it.

stargirl1701 · 13/01/2024 17:37

Switch Tom Cruise for Gerald Butler in Jack Reacher.

BassoContinuo · 13/01/2024 17:38

Agree with this.

It didn’t help that he looked about 10 years younger than her (despite being slightly older, I think)

Towelrail · 13/01/2024 17:38

Surely belle should have been a French actress like Clémence Poésy if they were choosing from the HP generation

Newsenmum · 13/01/2024 17:40

Emma Watson as belle and in little women.

Perhaps Chris Hemsworth?
