Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle. She was almost ethereally beautiful, but in this movie, miscast. Julie Andrews would have been far better suited for that role.
Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala. This strong character supposedly had enough wherewithall to rule a planet at a mere 14. But when compared with the spirit and charisma of Carrie Fisher as her daughter, Princess Leia, she's pretty much a damp squib.
Going to disagree on Alison Steadman. Her Mrs Bennet is shrill and ridiculous, but Mrs Bennet IS shrill and ridiculous. For a great adaptation it did have some pretty weak performances, though. Mr Bingley, Mr Wickham, Colonel and Mrs Forster, were all pretty poor. Stand-out performances for me were David Bamber as Collins and Barbara Leigh-Hunt - both excellent, and Mary was also FUN (her caterwauling was very entertaining!)
LOTR - same thing. Some excellent stand-outs: Gandalf, Aragorn, Elrond, and Frodo and Sam. Eowyn's pretty good, too. But Orlando Bloom was wooden; so, strangely enough, was Cate Blanchett who's been consistently brilliant in every other role I've seen her play. Liv Tyler was dreadful.
I'm not sure why Andie McDowell was ever cast in anything at all. She's as stiff as a broom handle.
