Who would it be? I always thought Belle from Beauty and the Beast would have been hands down Anne Hathaway although I realise she was probably out of the age range

Currently thinking of others because it's Saturday afternoon and I'm bored

Bridget Jones for someone who was British and didn't sound weird or walk like they'd shat themselves.

Not sure if someone has already said this - but Kate Winslet would have made the most amazing Bridget Jones.

LadyWhitwell · 13/01/2024 20:20

Olivia Coleman as the queen in the Crown. Actually the whole cast of the Crown post Matt Smith and Claire Foy

Jeffjefftyjeff · 13/01/2024 20:31

Armie Hammer in Call me by your name. He is too old for the part - in the book he’s only a few years older. Also his questionable reputation since makes me sad there will probably now not be a sequel

FirstFallopians · 13/01/2024 20:36

Currently rereading and rewatching Lord of the Rings and am perplexed by the choice of Sean Astin as Sam. His accent makes me cringe- what is it supposed to be? West Country by way of the East End?

Also Emma Watson in literally anything. Little Women was whiplash inducing going from cracking performances from Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep and then poor old Emma not even being able to maintain the same accent for one scene.

I was just coming on to say the same!

She was terrible. So wooden.
Plus Elizabeth Debecki as Diana. Awful.

Tom Hardy -who i think is a good actor - as Heathcliff , acted in the style of Bernard Bresslaw from the carry on films.

That made me laugh, but it's so true!.

LadyEloise1 · 13/01/2024 20:45

Kate Winslett would have made the most amazing Bridget Jones - absolutely @BeachedOff

I couldn't understand why they chose Renee.
There are so many fantastic British actresses.
Mind you I could never understand why Helen Fielding chose the name Bridget for her heroine. It's a quintessential Irish name and had more or less fallen out of favour in Ireland. We now have a bank holiday in early February honouring St. Bridget and a pagan forebear with the name Bridget - pagan and religious are catered for with the Bank holiday.

Everyone is so up Claire Foy's arse on here I wonder if most people actually watched it. Claire Foy this. Claire Foy that.

Olivia Colman was fucking amazing.

As for Elizabeth Debicky. She was practically Diana's ghost she was that similar.

Shoot me!

Opinions are subjective! She was too thin and had strange mannerisms. Diana was a healthy shape at the end. I think it just irritated me!

Nah mate. Fuck the shape. Diana had this thing, a certain way she took an insharp of breath whenever she was about to make a point. Elizabeth Debicky clearly studied this, she studied it well. She was spooky

Girl on the Train Emily Blunt.

MadMadamMimz · 13/01/2024 22:48

Another vote for Emma Watson and the amazing twitching eyebrows. She really is terrible.

I'm afraid Richard Harris as Dumbledore gets a thumbs down from me. Instead of 'esteemed, wise wizard' I got 'confused man escapes from the old people's home' vibes.

Oh yes totally agree. Actually I don't really like her in anything she's been in.

Catlover1705 · 13/01/2024 19:27

Kevin Costner as Robin Hood was always a strange one, although he is easy on the eye.

Gosh but how right was Alan Rickman in that film. I'm coming over all giddy just thinking about him.

Thecatmaster · 13/01/2024 22:53

Alan Carr as James Bond.

SockQueen · 13/01/2024 22:57

Another vote for Russell Crowe in Les Miserables. So many amazing actors out there who could have sung/acted it better.

Old school, but another musical - Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady. Cast someone who actually sings rather than just speaking over the music.

Oohmontydon · 13/01/2024 23:04

Jonny Depp in Chocolat. I pictured his character in the book as an older man so he completely ruined it for me.

Nah mate. She just didn't look or sound the part to me.
I would think playing Diana or the late Queen would be a virtually impossible task.
Like I say, it's all subjective.

Came on to say Andi McDowell in Four Weddings. Every other character is so perfectly cast, goodness knows why she was cast as Carrie.

They actually asked tons of actresses before her but they all said no because of the rubbish wage £ offered

She only said yes after asking for a % of the royalties which as it turned out was good choice

ScribeSev · 14/01/2024 04:51

But yes Andie McDowell was awful in 4 weddings

Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle. She was almost ethereally beautiful, but in this movie, miscast. Julie Andrews would have been far better suited for that role.

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala. This strong character supposedly had enough wherewithall to rule a planet at a mere 14. But when compared with the spirit and charisma of Carrie Fisher as her daughter, Princess Leia, she's pretty much a damp squib.

Going to disagree on Alison Steadman. Her Mrs Bennet is shrill and ridiculous, but Mrs Bennet IS shrill and ridiculous. For a great adaptation it did have some pretty weak performances, though. Mr Bingley, Mr Wickham, Colonel and Mrs Forster, were all pretty poor. Stand-out performances for me were David Bamber as Collins and Barbara Leigh-Hunt - both excellent, and Mary was also FUN (her caterwauling was very entertaining!)

LOTR - same thing. Some excellent stand-outs: Gandalf, Aragorn, Elrond, and Frodo and Sam. Eowyn's pretty good, too. But Orlando Bloom was wooden; so, strangely enough, was Cate Blanchett who's been consistently brilliant in every other role I've seen her play. Liv Tyler was dreadful.

I'm not sure why Andie McDowell was ever cast in anything at all. She's as stiff as a broom handle.

Julie Andrews being officially passed for Doolittle meant she was able to accept Mary Poppins, so that’s a win!

Yes also came on here to say Emma Watson as Belle and Kevin Costner as Robin Hood. (i’m from Nottingham and simply can’t abide the american accent!)

Alan Rickman is god and I don’t care how old he is for anything! Amazing as Snape and everything.

Also I don’t give a shit about Dick Van Dyke’s cockney accent. First watching Mary Poppins as a kid is amazing and I certainly didn’t care about his accent then. Step in time is awesome.

Anything starring Nicolas cage. I don't know how he has so many roles. I'd recast him with pretty much anyone though Brad Pitt would do nicely.

He's the perfect amount of cheese in Con Air Grin Such an unintentionally hilarious movie

I can't imagine anyone else than dick van dyke, he managed to give a cartoonish role weight and depth.
