There’s a new one. I’ve reported it.

That makes two of us. Hopefully they’ll give up soon.

I asked for evidence for your open borders claim not scaremongering nonsense about benefits

Please let me know how Labour plan to control our open borders.
Not sure why you claim that giving economic migrants/refugees benefits is ‘scaremongering’?
How do you expect them to eat or have access to healthcare?

How do you work out that our borders are open? And can you not dodge the question this time, please?

So again, If someone arrives on a beach or an airport from Afghan etc,

Where would you send them?

If they have come from France, how would you get them back to France?

Career politician?? Confused

He was a QC for many years, before a stint in the civil service.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keir_Starmer

If you get all your information from Wikipedia no wonder you’re struggling.

Starmer refused to say he’d overturn wrongful convictions in the Post Office scandal today.

Prof Christopher Hodges, chair of the Compensatory Advisory Board, says he’s wrong & needs to be “more radical.”

As ever, Starmer rejects the radical option in favour of something ineffective.

Have you any idea what these wrongly accused postmasters went through? People killed themselves!

When he was Director of Public Prosecutions Starmer let Jimmy Savile go, with over 500 sworn affidavits (verified statements) from his victims, Starmer claimed "insufficient evidence "
But it earned him a Safe Labour Seat and a Knighthood.

On a positive note, he’s been robust about the right for Israel to defend itself and cracked down on anti Semitism in the party. I suspect many on this thread won’t like that lol.

But I don’t trust any career politician. He’ll do whatever it takes to get the top job.

That’s libellous. Even Johnson apologised for that particular lie.

Are you going to explain these alleged open borders?

jasflowers · 08/01/2024 18:43

Talk about moving the goal posts!

Starmer refused to say he’d overturn wrongful convictions in the Post Office scandal today

He did not say that at all, he said that the legal process needs to be looked at, the law cannot just be changed on a whim.

I'm glad he would look at this carefully and with consideration, its what this country needs, not more poor decision making.

Some post masters had their appeals rejected by the court of appeal.

Plus the next GE is up to 12 months away, should we all have to wait another year??
So the question of overturning convictions is down to Sunak and Tory Govt, many sub post masters were prosecuted during their time in office.

I don't get my info from Wikipedia, I linked it as its a good summary.
I followed his time as DPP as he did a lot to support vulnerable victims and increase rape conviction rates and that's something really important to me. He did an amazing job there, which sadly was largely undone by the next DPP under the Conservatives.

The Savile thing is a smear and only goes to show how little there is to attack Starmer for politically.

https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSL1N2RP200/

Starmer, the current Labour Party leader, was the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Head of the CPS from 2008 until 2013 (here).

He was not the reviewing lawyer in charge of probing the Savile allegations. The CPS told Reuters in an email that there is no reference to any involvement from the DPP in the decision-making within a report (here) examining the case.

https://x.com/YouGov/status/1744386447384146069?s=20

Thinking about the condition of the UK, do you think things are currently better, worse, or about the same as they were in 2010?

All Britons
Better: 7%
Same: 13%
Worse: 75%

2019 Con voters
Better: 9%
Same: 19%
Worse: 68%

Vote to GTTO

Less than 7% of the country have benefitted from the Tories enrichment of those who already have more money than any could need, so that doesn't explain all of those who think that things are better. Weird.

That makes no sense. Why would anyone pay people traffickers if there were no passports and no border control? Confused

Schrodinger's border.

Here we go. The usual lazy Tory rhetoric that Labour want uncontrolled immigration .

Hang on, as far as I knew Sunak as an economic migrant had worked hard to increase migration.
After all wasn't their a vote in the commons today to further increase migration?

How much is an asylum seeker given each week to live on @GreekDogRescue ?

Why would economic migrants need to be given benefits, presumably like Sunak and I when they were economic migrants they work in the country they migrated to?

jgw1 · 08/01/2024 19:12

Starmer refused to say he’d overturn wrongful convictions in the Post Office scandal today.

Since to the best of my knowledge Starmer isn't a judge, and isn't sitting on any of the appeals to the convictions, he can no more do anything to overturn the convictions than I can.

Despite what some members of the current government seem to believe, the rule of law apply to everyone. Ministers cannot unilaterally change the law, much less decide whether or not someone has or has not broken the law.

Such generous benefits

Labours plans

  • Back a points-based immigration systemHave no return to freedom of movement
  • Sort out the points-based immigration system so that it ensures the economy has the skills it needs and that prolonged vacancies do not hold back growth in key sectors
  • Reform and strengthen the Migration Advisory Committee with appropriate input from across the UK so that it can review shortages more often, take account of shortages specific to the nations and regions and inform training decisions, as well as working with Skills England and skills bodies in other devolved nations to project the workforce needs of the future
  • Scrap rules that allow overseas workers coming to the UK to be paid 20% less than the going rate for that job
  • Any movement in Labour’s points-based migration system will come alongside new conditions to boost skills and more training, provide better pay and conditions and invest in new technology. When a sector is already heavily reliant on immigration, it will be required to develop these plans through dialogue and negotiation involving employers and trade unions
  • Ensure that all employers able to are meeting decent standards of pay and conditions
  • Ensure there is strong action to prevent exploitation in the immigration system including tackling abuse and exploitation of domestic workers
  • If the Conservative Home Office continues to fail the Windrush generation, the next Labour government will be willing to overhaul the Windrush Compensation Scheme and put it outside of Home Office control. Restart and improve community engagement and outreach work to encourage applications to the scheme and speed up compensation payments
  • Implement the recommendations of the Williams ‘Lessons Learned’ review of the Windrush scandal, including conducting a full review of the “hostile environment” that led to the Windrush scandal to make sure it cannot be repeated

I have not seen those threads about Starmer's children, but can make an educated guess what they are saying.

Has the poster who thought Starmer had something to do with the Post Office scandal come back to explain what they meant, or are they too embarrassed?

Call me cynical, but the government suddenly being all over the scandal seems very well-timed.

Me neither, hopefully that is because they are getting zapped as soon as they appear.

IClaudine · 08/01/2024 21:07

I see it was Farage who began spreading the misinformation about Starmer's (non) role in the PO scandal. That explains a lot.
