Happy New Year!

I'm still off work and getting bored. Looking for some good threads to waste a morning diving into.

What threads have stuck with you since you read them on here? Any with particular good advice? Funny or just plain scandalous also welcomed!

All those people thinking about the Roman Empire multiple times a day/week.

I never understood that one. I assumed Roman Empire was code for something else, sex maybe. Do you know if it was serious?

honeyinwine · 05/01/2024 11:09

A thread where the OP had a male friend of many years and was utterly in-love with him, and was basically obsessed! One of them was a writer, OP complained when the male friend (who had a wife) would reject her advances for sex. The way OP wrote/spoke about him was something out of a stalker book because of how intensive it was, and I still think of it till this day. If I also remember correctly she went to his house multiple times and texted him everynight on top of other things she did.

I often think about the little boy called Ben who died Sad

I remember reading in a thread about other threads - like this one - about a (Scottish?) mumsnetter who had travel anxiety and had to make an urgent train journey down south to see a family member.

So Mumsnetters got together to support her on her journey and coordinated a team of volunteers who went to wave at her on each station platform as the train went past and make their presence known in case she had to get off?

I know it sounds like something out of a film. 😝. Most likely apocryphal but I always like to think it happened 😀😀😂

This reminds me one about someone trying to get a soft(?) toy for their child for Christmas and an army of MNers got her one, and got it to her in time for Christmas? I can't remember the exact details - does anyone remember it?

There was one about a lady who worked in a garage and everyone but her was invited to a colleague's wedding.

And there was another one about a year ago about a woman who was moving to Australia to escape an abusive ex. I hope she made it ok.

DingDongMerrilyOnHi · 05/01/2024 11:24

So many over the year’s, sad, worrying, hilarious lots that have stuck with my for many reasons…

The lady who had to give way/pull in every time she met the same grumpy lady on a country road until she decided she was going to have a stand off…

The women who was convinced her husband, who said he was on business trip was actually away with an OW and she was considering flying out to confront him! (Think she did turn out to be a troll though!)

There was one about a horse field a few years ago, can’t remember the details but I think argument in ownership and I was really invested…

The really weird one about the same posters/posters turning up on baby names threads across various forums and comments the same thing with distinctive odd wording, there whats of comments discussing what it would be, from someone who was unwell, to a coding game and lots more darker motives, it was all very strange,

Will try to think of some more.

SuperFi · 05/01/2024 11:28

A thread called A Low Point In Marriage, it was chilling how cruel the OPs husband was, the poster had endured terrible sexual abuse .
He was also working in caring professsion which was a terrifying thought.
She got out in the end thank god.

greglet · 05/01/2024 11:33

I often think about a poster called @whomovedmychocolate. She had an older husband and two small children, and lived in a beautiful cottage in the countryside. She was very funny and I enjoyed her posts. It then transpired that her husband had been having an affair and I think eventually she stopped posting. This was in 2010 or 2011 so many years ago now, but I still think about her and hope things worked out okay for her.

AngelinaFibres · 05/01/2024 11:37

Pamela. An Irish lady with liver and bile cancer. From diagnosis to death was about 6 weeks. She travelled to London for treatment. It was a thread this summer. She had a husband and young teen son.

AdditionalCharacter · 05/01/2024 11:43

I often think about the poster who was homeless and used to charge her phone in McDonalds, finally got her own place. Hope she is ok and got to see her DC.

TempyBrennan · 05/01/2024 11:43

Years ago there was a poster with a very unique garden layout, the houses were in a square with a centre courtyard which was walled off and belonged to the OP.
a historical protected site but the neighbours knocked into the courtyard and started building an extensions or something along those lines…
it was utterly bonkers what the neighbours were doing and the thread just ended and never got updated.
i think about it a lot 😂

mrswaldron · 05/01/2024 11:43

I think about lovely Pamela and her family frequently. The way she wrote about what she was going through will stay with me forever. I cried when I read that she had passed away. I hope Pamela's family are doing as well as they can be and that they can take some comfort that she touched the hearts of so many.

I often think of a lady who used to post years ago - she was homeless and would often have to charge her phone up on the bus. I feel like she had a child who lived with her dad. I think her name was something like Oddsocks or something to do with shoes. I often wonder how life turned out for her.

I once went through some difficult times and received some great advice from a poster with a username something like cognitoergosomething or something very similar. I wish I could remember the username. I remember being grateful for the advice and wishing that the poster was someone I could go for a cuppa with in real life as they seemed like a really wise person!

The one where the ironing board randomly disappeared from the posters small flat, does anyone know if she ever found it?! Also the recent one about the crows, I'd love to know what happened!

And the one where the poster turned on the bathroom light and she thought something else clicked on.

The ironing board/person in attic one was responsible for me being shit scared someone was living in my mum's garage.... Nope. Doors swelled in the wet!Xmas Blush

Anyone know what happened to poster OpheliaRose? Her husband left her for his colleague. OP and her husband had twins and the colleague even wrote a card when the twins were born. Husband seemed quite successful, and besotted with the colleague.

OP seemed lovely, and devastated. I got busy with life so didn't follow the thread after a while.

Was just about to ask after her also.

FrostieBoabby · 05/01/2024 11:50

The fairly recent one with the Irish (?) girl who died of cancer.

There was so much detail and it went on for ages but turned out to be fake or at least suspected of being fake.

Why would anyone fake that?

Squaffle · 05/01/2024 11:54

Lovely Pamela and her family have been in my thoughts a lot this year. What an incredible woman.

I often think about a lady who fled DV, I think her username was ‘Red Toothbrush’ or something very similar. Her partner hated the colour red as it was the colour of a rival football team and she wasn’t allowed anything of that colour in the house whatsoever. She endured some truly awful abuse, and made plans to leave which she was able to carry out, she was sending update messages from motorway service stations during her journey away from him. She then updated to say she had settled safely and had brought herself a red toothbrush. I really hope she’s ok (and that she wasn’t a troll), she was so brave.

It was a troll thread

TurkeyTwizlers · 05/01/2024 11:55

One that wasn’t even that long ago, she had eventually managed to get her abusive husband to move out. She had two teenagers I think. He had continued to try and cause grief with her.

PlacidPenelope · 05/01/2024 11:55

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 05/01/2024 10:34

There was one a very very long time ago who ate cold pizza from the food waste bin as her DO wouldn’t give her any access to money on Mat leave, would only buy food for himself and baby food jars for their baby when he was angry at her, wouldn’t let her claim child benefit because he’d have to pay it back. She’d completely run down all savings and all credit.

remember joining it late and she’d spoke to WA and had help, a MNer was meeting her at a train station with her baby (buggy and whatever else she could carry) to pay her train fare to get to a shelter.

it was a long time ago and possibly that baby is now at secondary school. I hope it worked out for them.

Er no, the OP married him - the update thread was titled Reader, I married him.

I suspect all was not as it seemed with that one, the MNer who offered to meet her was continuously put off by the OP, excuse after excuse after excuse.

StrawberryJellyBelly · 05/01/2024 11:56

.second was from a young mum whose husband took his own life. She later posted to say she was in a new relationship but her ex’s family were giving her a really hard time. She came across as such a lovely woman doing her best in shitty circumstances. I really hope Her and her DC are happy

I remember this one. She was in South Wales ( I think) and I seem to recall she had to move away from the husbands family because of their behaviour.

There was an update recently and she's doing fine.
