I am not a huge fan of the Guardian. The Times has been my daily paper for 30 years (free subs as a law grad) but this article is v interesting/perturbing and definitely worth reading in full.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/06/rishi-sunak-javier-milei-donald-trump-atlas-network

The IEA created, to a remarkable degree, Liz Truss’s political platform. In a video conversation on the day of her “mini” budget with another member of the institute, its then director general, Mark Littlewood, observed: “We’re on the hook for it now. If it doesn’t work it’s your fault and mine.” It didn’t work – in fact, it crashed spectacularly, at great cost to us all – but, thanks to the UK’s media, the BBC included, which continue to treat these fanatical corporate lobbyists as purveyors of holy writ, they’re off the hook.

Oh. How surprising. Literally nobody could have predicted this…

Thread 35 - Sunak, the squatter

What was it Starmer said about the reverse Midas touch? 😂

@Zonder so sorry - favour leaving the ECHR. Edited by cat and then I went to bed and didn't check.

Yes, and that's yours, mine and our childrens rights...it makes us all safer. And the only reason to pull out is for the Government to dodge accountability.

The only nations not signed up to the ECHR is Belarus and Russia. Says it all.

And if a forum is espousing that, it tells me everything I need to know about it.

BIossomtoes · 07/01/2024 09:13

Maybe Sunak will even go before May now, the pigeons are all coming to roost at once. Bet Johnson’s laughing like a drain.

Floundering around on LK now, avoiding giving a clear answer on whether he ever had doubts about Rwanda.

Thanks - I was trying to think what favour could be a typo for but didn't think of a missing word!

I've said it before (x1000) I'll say it again, he really, really, just needs to bugger off and live an absolutely fabulous life somewhere and the sooner he puts us all out of our misery the better!

Baroness Casey responding to Sunak's interview on LK this morning - summing my thoughts pretty accurately.

I'm braving LK and RS on iPlayer.

I’m guessing his wife says the same thing to him on a regular basis.

Constantly having to justify his obvious brilliance to a bunch of povo’s is no way to live. If they’re not in awe then it’s not worth it.

I do wish he’d stop banging on about how he’s still got work he wants to do… beg off with that shite now, your own party barely wanted you as leader let alone the country. Time to be humble and accept the thinn thread of democracy left in this country and let people decide whether they want your particular style of ‘work’.

That's a devastating takedown, all the more for how mildly she words it.

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2024 12:49

I haven't watched the LK show but agree that take down from Casey is devestating.

Has anyone here followed the Post Office scandal?

There is now going to be a criminal investigation by Met Police over wrongful prosecution of hundreds of sub-postmasters.

Police confirm they’re looking at “potential fraud offences” in the handling of the Horizon IT scandal

Kudus to those news outlets who have been persuing it and ITV for making it into a tv series

Disgraceful that policing is now by popular demand though. Investigations should be launched as soon as they are aware of possible law breaking. Just like with partygate, they've ignored it until the public outcry got too loud.

Notonthestairs · 07/01/2024 15:05

Helen Harrison, girlfriend of ex MP Peter Bone who was chucked out for sexual misconduct, selected as the Tory's official candidate for the Wellingborough by-election. She supported Bone throughout his suspension, and canvassed for him.

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2024 14:59

So the OBR have worked on the basis that the Government is more capable than it actually has been?!

Who are "private MPs"? To cowardly to put their names down?

And frankly I don't think anyone who has been sacked for misleading their own Government should be handing out advice to anyone.

But I certainly think we could make the OBR more independent of the Government.

Roussette · 07/01/2024 15:24

Peter Bone's got a girlfriend?

Is he the one who exposed himself, I think he is. She needs help

Yuk yuk yuk

tobee · 07/01/2024 15:26

It doesn't seem like that good a plan by Wellingborough conservatives on the face of it.

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2024 15:44

It has the feel of a set up, this thread has info on the other candidates or lack of info re Mercer.

https://twitter.com/Katie_Cronin/status/1743989503960764779?t=Kbh2nZDea-Dx9k6jM6qBng&s=19

So the three shortlisted for this afternoon’s Wellingborough prospective parliamentary candidate selection are:

  • Helen Harrison
  • Rev Dr Beatrice Brandon
  • Tom Mercer
Notonthestairs · 07/01/2024 16:13

There seems to have been a suggestion that Bone was going to stand as an independent if Harrison wasn't on the list.
No idea whether that is correct.
