Wow, actually surprised at Maxine Carr. I know someone who has become a star in her sphere and she has to stand on her own two feet, but MC has always struck me as someone who would be tough but fleetingly kind in her everyday life

Now he is my secret crush - even went to watch him on his book tour. Pleased to hear he is lovely!

Same here - he's beautiful.

I watched it. I used to be a big fan of his.
The US trial didn't overturn the British one in which he was found guilty of domestic abuse, you do realise that?

During the US trial he displayed the behaviours of a controlling, vindictive and abusive man and as much as I have admired him as an actor, I wouldn't trust him further than I could throw him.

However badly Amber Herd may have behaved, doesn't change his guilt. Astonished to see apologists for him on the website.

Yeah - Also think he was a controlling, manipulative and violent individual.

Neither of them came across well, but he was a sleaze.

@Emotionalsupportviper
Mark Addy used to smoke like a chimney & told the funniest/rudest jokes! Was always fun and pleasant .
Top fella all round

Met Stephen Mangan through work and he was really friendly and professional.

I’m glad to hear this. I think he is rather lovely 😊

Maxine Carr???

When he did that to my friend, she was wearing a short dress and so her underwear was on show. Press photographers were there snapping away, hence her being especially angry and humiliated. I had no idea he has form for that. We'd have kept away from him if we'd known.

He (Branson) probably got off on the humiliation. I expect that was the point.
There was also that weird photo shoot he did waterskiing with a naked model clinging to his back. Which I’m sure he claimed was all her idea (of course it was). Ugh.
I actually came across him a few years back - probably about 15 years ago, maybe a bit more. He “crashed” our work Xmas party very late at night (it was being held at one of the venues he owned at the time), and he was pretty drunk and very much all over the younger, more attractive women. Very handsy. Was trying (unsuccessfully) to persuade a couple of them to go off with him to a private party.

Please tell me you're thinking of Maxine Peake - or indeed any other Maxine who hasn't aided and abetted a child murderer?

That said, I recall reading years ago in a magazine about an innocent woman who happened to have the name Maxine Carr. She received a lot of hatred and threats from hard-of-thinking people, who hadn't read the reports that the infamous MC had been given a new name and identity. Plus, this innocent lady was Scottish (evident from her accent) - and also black...

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 13/01/2024 00:51

Oh wait
I was thinking of whatever one was the great Yorkshire actress. Just off to get my poopy smelling cat to hide on my face in embarrassment because that’s a Huge Mistake

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 13/01/2024 01:04

Branson is definitely one I wouldn't be remotely surprised to hear has been suspected/accused of something appalling at any point in the future (or even after his death).

I remember the 'Big news is about to be revealed about Russell Brand' thread - when it started off vaguely, without naming him, but eventually people started giving initials. A surprising number of people guessed at Richard Branson and seemed to have instincts and experiences of him to make him a widely-believable suspect - even after it had been made clear that the man in question was a comedian.

I think the deliberate choice of the name 'Virgin' for all his brands sounds a lot like hiding in plain sight. He knew very well that it wasn't just a bit kooky, but an extremely suggestive and loaded name to choose, whatever excuses he came out with about it supposedly just referring to new businesses.

With the randomly grabbing (assaulting) women and turning them upside down, often showing off their underwear, it goes with the territory of deliberately wanting to make people feel awkward and embarrassed.

I remember the shocked and disbelieving reaction of a lot of people - especially many older folk - at the opening of a large business called 'Virgin'. It also normalised the use of the word for children who didn't yet really know what it meant, but happily embraced it as it represented something cool to them - and then led to potentially difficult questions if they did ask their parents what the name meant.

I should probably caveat this by saying that I am not accusing Branson of anything - other than the behaviours that have been documented and evidenced - but I find him to be an extremely 'interesting' man.

Phew, I assumed it must have been a momentary confusion!

No worries Smile

Thank goodness! BF and I have a tradition of just shouting MYYY MISTAAAKE! I HAVE MADE MY MISTAAAKE a la month python and I would be doing that if poopy cat were not snoring three feet away. I really don’t want her actually on my face so we’re not waking her thanks.
Just to keep to the theme I’ve also met that really strangely named Princess -Princess Edward? Princess Wessex of Wessex? Andrew countess of made up land? Princess Edward of nonexistent county? Very nice but obviously boring and not memorable:

can't help thinking of virgin in other contexts; virgin snow, virgin olive oil, the Virgin Mary......

There are some absolutely thick-as-sh1t people about. Like the ones who attacked a paediatrician because they confused it with "paedophile". Because all child abusers put "paedophile" next to their name in the phone book, and add it to the business plaque on their premises.

I'll get me coat . . .

I met Bill Murray at a college basketball game once (where I went to university). His son was the assistant coach at the time. He was very nice, patient and down to earth. We talked for several minutes and he was very curious about the fact I was a teacher. It was a very cool experience.

I hope I’m not think as shit and I personally I’m a bit glad I got confused by accidentally lauding Carr and not by taking a knife to Peake!!! But apologies all round and apologies to everyone except the non-child-murderer Maxine Carrs who have probably changed their names anyway or are having a shit time.

Yeah @Ownedbykitties I always thought he meant Virgin to be an edgy cool ' let's all laugh at Christians' sort of brand?

True, it's not like it's a taboo word, but I think the context is very different.

People don't normally talk about Mary, snow or olive oil with a knowing leer and deliberate PR campaigns designed to shock.

SwirlyShirly · 13/01/2024 11:25

I've met quite a few
Jeremy Irons - quiet but pleasant
Orlando Bloom - did not recognise him
Lenny Henry - nice
Dawn French - lovely
Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee - fine
Philip Schofield - arrogant
George Harrison - lovely
Kate Garaway - really really lovely and easy to chat to
There are others I'll have to have a think.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 13/01/2024 12:04

No, you are actually having me on now. People are just rolling up like “hello Monaco”?

I’m just imagining Bloom having become the hermit in Monty Python and abandoned clothing while growing a long beard.

Oh - that was a simple error that anyone could make (and I do all the time).

No - I wasn't getting a dig in at you and I apologise if it came across that way.

Plus as you say - she'll have had a name change.

I feel sorry for her namesake though. Awful for her.
