Anyone actually excited about a Keir / Labour govt?

roarrfeckingroar · 04/01/2024 17:37

I'm typically a Tory voter (one nation Conservative, just right of centre, nothing radical) and gender critical, so I'm wary of a Labour government. I worry they'll leave the country worse than it is now.

However, I absolutely agree we need a change. Things can't get much worse, can they? Idiots like Boris and Truss have made a mockery of what I understand of the Conservatives - namely economic competence - and I can't vote for them this time. I don't know who I will vote for.

Listening to LBC this evening, I hear a Labour MP talk about how Starmer is offering an "exciting programme" of change and I just don't buy it. Maybe he will he better, maybe he won't, but my real question is is anyone genuinely excited about Labour, or just looking forward to the back of the Tories?

You are, perhaps like another poster, unaware that the UK has had a Tory government for 13 years.
If they did not like the GRA they could have changed it at any time they liked.
That they have not, coupled with the Home Secretary who thinks it amusing to give his wife date rape drugs still being in post, I would have thought tells you all you need to know about the Tories approach to women.

This shows you are unaware of too many things to do with gender ideology so it’s too much to bother. But try FWR for insight

Dibblydoodahdah · 04/01/2024 18:45

No, the figures circulated by Labour as the amount of VAT that would be generated on school fees are inaccurate as they don’t take into the VAT that schools would be able to reclaim. If they can’t get that right, what else will they get wrong (or use to
mislead the public)….

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2024 18:46

Well I wouldn't say excited is the right word , but certainly would massively prefer it to this bunch of complete self interested asset stripping europhobic numpties - a great many of whom seem thick as shit

I am too worn down by years of fucking Tories and the twats who voted for them believing they would be anything other than disastrous. Will it be exciting - more like a relief to have grown ups who give a shit about something other than their cronies in charge.

Shinyandnew1 · 04/01/2024 18:46

The Conservatives have broken the country-I can’t wait to see the back of them. The current rabble of Gullis, Patel, Braverman, Sunak and Cleverly are incompetent, self-serving liars and a clean sweep is just what is needed.

Yes if you have a penis.

😂 although depressing at the same time

So what? 🤷‍♂️

May isn’t leading now, Badenoch is relevant. You won’t get challenge under Labour

The opposite. Look at Lammy, Whittome, Osborne, Drakeford for Labour’s views on women

Challenge for what? I’ll take any Labour view on women over the current Home Secretary’s who wants a Stepford wife and thinks sedating her is acceptable.

I am a centrist. Starmer is a centrist. It is why Corbynites hate him. He is also very competent. We need someone who is competent rather than someone who is a personality.

🤣 ok!

I want rid of FPTP and the House of Lords. Who will make that happen?

HoLs will hopefully happen in the next parliament.
That is surely something we can all be excited about for the next government.

This is my thinking too.

The general public should be aware that the richest 1% in the country quadrupled their wealth in the first 4 years the coalition were in government.

I don't believe this at all. Would love to see the source for this.

I will not vote Tory but just be aware high tax rates are driving people away. The 1% pay 36% of tax.

A friend who is an accountant has lost two clients this year who emigrated for tax reasons, they and their largely digital businesses are now based in Dubai and the UK lost millions in tax revenue.

When an average wage earner leaves there is little impact on taxes, when a very higher earner leaves the UK loses big amounts of tax - the consequences of that is either lower earners pay more tax or we cut services. Other countries want higher earners to move there and create jobs (and pay some taxes too) we need to keep our 1% super rich in the UK to pay tax here.

Quite incredible.

The Tories have no plans to change the GRA, just blame someone else, in this case the ECHR.

All talk, no action.

UK tax burden is below the OECD average, we will never compete with Dubai, no western country can.
USA has higher business taxes, have MS or Apple moved?

When you say the Super Rich, do you mean nr billionaires like Sunak, who pays around 22% tax on his mainly unearned income?

Newchapterbeckons · 04/01/2024 18:53

I think they could lose on the gender issues. I don’t why any woman would vote for them. Poor Rosie!

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2024 18:55

@alltootired me too. I certainly wouldn't be voting based on the fact a Tory knows what a woman is- I've just come back from Sweden- all our hotel toilets were unisex and cubicles- didn't seem too big a deal for anyone and to be frank when people like Shaun Bailey today go on about Carolvorderman daring to be political as well as having 'stylised pics' on insta showing she has a great bum and boobs- it's clear what plenty of Tory blokes think about attractive women too- there to be seen and not heard, preferably whilst keeping the house nice.

You hope. Many, many women will vote for them because their focus isn’t narrowed down to a single issue. Why doesn’t “Poor Rosie” stand for another party?

Can I ask your thoughts about the top 4 countries in the world for women's parity with men on the 4 key dimensions of Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment, and their introduction of more relaxed gender self-ID policies?

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 04/01/2024 18:58

I'm not excited by anyone from any party getting in! They lack skills and care, they talk a lot and say nothing, they change with the wind and none of them seem to have a handle on what things really cost and what is important to the majority of us, always focusing on the small stuff when the majority of us want the big stuff of life sorted. As for money, there is none and giving more to institututions being badly run, just gives them more money to waste. We need to see those who are in government, local and national, being held to account and only being allowed into parliament when they have something they can contribute to it. Sadly having seen some of the Labour politicians in action, in person, I fear for what comes next if they get into power and I fear what the Conservatives will do to the nation if they get back in! Never seen such a poor collection of MPs in my voting life!

LastnightIDreamedofManderley · 04/01/2024 18:59

Labour all the way. Get rid of this current shit show.

Why have Labour got so many women MPs?

Do you think they are all stupid?

You’ll never get an answer. Anything that conflicts with that narrow view gets a stiff ignoring round here.

dressedforcomfort · 04/01/2024 19:04

Starmer has to be a better prospect than what we've had for the last few years - surely?

Yep people will vote over the economy, always do.

I guess thats why Sunak is banking on a late 2024 election but whilst he will bet on a 2% inflation rate, all it means is that we still have very high prices still going UP.

daffodilandtulip · 04/01/2024 19:05

No matter what you think of Labour, there's too much of a mess to sort out in a few years, they'll get the blame for not sorting it out, and lose the next election before they've had chance to fix much 🤷🏼‍♀️
