What do we think?

I'm actually more impressed than I expected to be. Starting to think they might be in with a chance.

Sir Keir Starmer: UK faces a year of choice, Starmer says in key speech - BBC News

The Labour leader's speech in Bristol comes at the start of a year that's almost certain to have a general election.

Meh people can google themselves not demand it

It is polite MN practice to provide links if asked. I was asked to and did so, even though it showed what I initially said was actually incorrect.

Notonthestairs · 05/01/2024 11:33

from the same link -

While London was the region with the highest absolute number of food parcels distributed (384,477) between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023, when looking at a breakdown of food parcels delivered per 100,000 people, Wales emerges as the region with the highest rates of dependency on food banks (5,963 people per 100,000). Other areas with notably high dependency are the North East with 5,833 parcels delivered per 100,000 population and the East of England with 5,122 per 100,000.

It's also polite to say please! 🤷‍♀️

OhFFS! · 05/01/2024 11:50

Here's a radical thought, why not vote for who you think has the best policies.

In a democracy, yes you should vote, but for who you want, not what someone tells you to. All this tactical voting talk does my head in.

If labour has policies you like, vote for them. If it's the tories, vote for them instead.

IClaudine · 05/01/2024 11:50

Thank you @Notonthestairs . It is very depressing reading.

Notonthestairs · 05/01/2024 11:55

Personally I think it's impolite to challenge data without backing it up with your own referenced information.

But clearly others have differing personal rules. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sure they can, but it’s politer to provide the evidence that backs up the (blunt vs rude?) statement ‘out of date data’.

if you don’t want the onus to back up your own statements maybe don’t make them in the first place?

It wasn’t me but

‘Old data I'm afraid’ as in pp is not blunt or rude

Neither is saying "can you link to the latest". Hey-ho.

EasternStandard · 05/01/2024 12:03

Please…

IClaudine · 05/01/2024 12:05

To be fair, ChristmasinBurrRidge seems to be a new MNetter, so maybe not aware that it is considered good manners to back statements up where possible,

Thank you @Notonthestairs . It is very depressing reading.

You’re polite here so maybe just do the same even if not on your political side

The demanding links then no thank you seems to be more prevalent when you think people owe it to you for whatever reason

Cornettoninja · 05/01/2024 12:09

I know it wasn’t you @EasternStandard, apologies I worded that badly. It was meant more of a general ‘you’.

though I’d maintain it is actually quite rude to expect strangers, who only know you as a stranger, to just take their word for their statement being a factual one. There’s no basis at all for trusting anyone on their word alone on the internet. It’s fine if people want to but there’s no need for dishing out patronising rebukes if someone does question the validity of something you’ve posted.

I haven't demanded anything, I don't think I have been impolite on this thread (except when describing current Tory dog whistle politics) and if Christmasinburrudge had provided a link I would have thanked them.

Anyway, this is turning into a derail.

I tend to Google myself if challenged, to check if I'm right or mistaken. Regardless of MN etiquette.

And I agree, @OhFFS!. I also think that spoiling your vote is a legitimate method of protest.

Does Drakeford joke about date rape?

Neither did Cleverly but don't let facts get in the way of your spin.

DewHopper · 05/01/2024 14:33

Not spinning anything. Cleverly told a Downing Street reception that: “a little bit of Rohypnol in her drink every night” was “not really illegal if it’s only a little bit”.

That is a joke about a drug used in date rape.

I suppose if you want to be really pedantic I should have asked whether Drakeford jokes about the use of date rape drugs.

Does he?

DewHopper · 05/01/2024 15:19

I am not defending his stupid 'joke' merely pointing out the facts.

Drakeford's behaviour is on a par if not worse as he was absolutely not joking when he scolded a Conservative female Minister for daring to ask a question about women's rights. He is also now launching an inquiry and going after Tonia Antioniazzi who is Labour but dares to believe in biological facts and standing up for women. He is a genuine misogynist.

DewHopper · 05/01/2024 15:20

As for what he jokes about in private - who knows?

IClaudine · 05/01/2024 15:29

Same goes for Cleverly. If he thinks it is OK to joke about date rape drugs in public, god knows what he says in private.

Themountainwithsnowonit · 05/01/2024 15:31

Starmer:

99.9% of women "of course haven't got a penis"

"Firstly a woman is an adult female, so let’s clear that one up … ”

"Let me be clear - for the vast majority of women this is all about biology and of course they don't have a penis."

"It's wrong to say only women have a cervix"

Well which is it Keir?

EffieeBriest · 05/01/2024 16:49

@EasternStandard lol. Now let’s guess where you live ? Oldham ? Burnley ?
Stoke ? or is it more Primrose Hill or Barnes ? All the faux ‘but I like where I live ‘ disingenuousness when you probably live in one of the most prosperous parts of the country where life is great, the schools are good, the artisan shop keepers are falling over themselves and anyone would think the conservatives were actually competent.

Nope. Wrong

Good to see effort in trying to guess

Apparently the Wales poster likes where they live too, do them you might get that
