What do we think?

I'm actually more impressed than I expected to be. Starting to think they might be in with a chance.

Sir Keir Starmer: UK faces a year of choice, Starmer says in key speech - BBC News

The Labour leader's speech in Bristol comes at the start of a year that's almost certain to have a general election.

Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board in special measures for the best part of 8 years, highest use of food banks in the UK and mean reading scores below the OECD average and almost 30 points below England and Scotland are just some of the recent statistics under Welsh Labour - unsurprising that Starmer has recently twice declined to repeat his previous claim that Welsh Labour was his "blueprint" for power.

EffieeBriest · 05/01/2024 10:33

@EasternStandard see what stacking up ? We are talking about more than just economic policies. Widespread corruption a la Robert Jenrick, dishonesty, pork barrel politics. Even Brexit, lies, deception. Most people admit that public services are collapsing, even long time Tory voters but you can’t vote labour because of the state of wales when the reality in England is worse ?

Pretty much this

IClaudine · 05/01/2024 10:37

Ah, the old chestnut "in Labour run Wales". Trotted out by many a beleaguered in PMQs.

Yes, there are of course issues in Wales and the NHS here is struggling. There is poverty and deprivation (much of which has long roots going back to Thatcher).

But it is not all doom and gloom. On the whole, Wales is a good place to live. I speak as someone who has lived in England and Wales and currently lives in the latter.

Likewise and I would say the situation in Wales for the 'ordinary working person' is dire but yes, 'that old chestnut' backed up by undisputed facts that highlight the failings of Welsh Labour.

EasternStandard · 05/01/2024 10:42

That’s great. I like where I live too. Not Wales

I still don’t want that direction

I am an ordinary working person (well full time carer now, but that is work, right?) and don't find it "dire" and I don't think many of my friends and neighbours do.

My DH is disabled and we have had some amazing support from social care over the past year.

DewHopper · 05/01/2024 10:51

Education (my field) and he NHS are not doing well in Wales at all and Mark Drakeford is a disgusting misogynist.

North of England and Scotland have the highest food bank usage in UK, not Wales.

Does Drakeford joke about date rape?

Old data I'm afraid

DewHopper · 05/01/2024 11:06

Just because she dared to ask about biological women's rights...

Can you link to the latest?

IClaudine · 05/01/2024 11:09

Oh yes, using the word "shrill" is up there with joking about sedating women.

I give up.

DewHopper · 05/01/2024 11:06

Just because she dared to ask about biological women's rights...

Yes he was aggressive and misogynistic and in answer to an important question for women

I expect we’ll see more when Labour are bolstered by more seats

You can see it already - Butler, Osborne, Whittome recent examples plus Lammy of course

DewHopper · 05/01/2024 11:14

I am not drawing any comparison - something you seem unable to help yourself doing. I am merely pointing out that he is a misogynist.

Manners cost nothing - try including a simple 'please'. I'm not prepared to engage with you any further but a simple Google search will bring up the data you require.

DewHopper · 05/01/2024 11:15

He's also another Labour policitican obsessed with trans rights and out of touch with the public - Wales will not miss him one bit.

Cornettoninja · 05/01/2024 11:18

That’s you told @IClaudine GrinGrin

Now be a dear and remember your manners Wink

Only if you say "please"!

That response has shades of "do your own research" and we all know the cohort which most keenly utilises it...

EasternStandard · 05/01/2024 11:25

Meh people can google themselves not demand it

EasternStandard · 05/01/2024 11:25
