Elevenerifers

Do you know any?
What’s the best approach to take when it is constant?

Going into the new year, am resolving to not just roll my eyes and keep quiet, but want to say something in the hope that they’ll actually stop.
Or am I asking for miracles here? 😆

Advice please wise MNs!

What? Ninereefers/Elevenereefers

Surely a 9ereefer is the opposite of the 11ereefer?

There are three different things; eleven is one better than you, nine is worse than you so more suited to ailments. Third is a Walter Mitty type, that’s people who just make up things, so like jay in the inbetweeners if you want a less archaic reference than Walter Mitty. a couple of these are a Walter Mitty.

My elevenrifer is my mother. Its both entertaining and exhausting.

Recent example... I've been ill recently. But apparently my illness was worse for her, as she had to deal with the worry of it...

Yep. My entire household have been ill this week, it's been miserable but not quite as miserable as my mother's week who has now had absolutely no visitors or nowhere to visit due to my sister being away.

PinkMimosa · 31/12/2023 11:26

Thoughts and prayers for your DM @PuttingDownRoots. I don't know how she's managed to get through such an awful time FlowersGrin

I work with an elevenerether- to be honest I couldn’t get her to stop so now I have fun pushing to see how far she’ll go.
she claimed she met the pope recently……

Keep pushing, see if she claims to have met God or Jesus.

festivetinseling · 31/12/2023 11:35

What is almost worse is when someone tells you something you're supposed to be impressed by, you could trump it hands down, but daren't say a word because you don't want them to think you are an Elevenerifer even though your story is true!

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/12/2023 11:46

I've learnt a new one today, the ninerifer.

demonheed · 31/12/2023 11:47

"If OP asks if you know an Elevenerife, but you know a Twelverife, does that mean you're actually the Elevenerife? 🤔😂"

Yep 🤣

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/12/2023 11:56

One of our neighbours is a wannabe elevenrifer, but her husband keeps letting her down.

She was rattling on about having booked a long haul holiday for two weeks, a very pricy one.

Someone said to her, you must be doing really well to afford that, she was loving it. Husband piped up "we've just got my mothers inheritance, so thought we'd go somewhere we could never normally afford."

They had their bathroom redone and she was telling me how amazing and expensive their shower was. Husband says "you'll know the one, it's the same as yours." - it's a neither expensive or amazing, it's from B&Q 🤣

Gilead · 31/12/2023 12:05

My mother is like this, we always tell people if you’ve shagged an elephant, she would have done the same with a wooly mammoth!

Fizbosshoes · 31/12/2023 12:23

I used to work work someone who wasn't really an elevenerifer because the stuff she wanted to "one up" as it were, was so bloody dull it would never come up in conversation so she had to tell you these random things that made her so different to everyone else.
Example : she was never able to do her completely average hair in an updo or ponytail because it was sooooo thick that no hairband or clip would cope with it . I was never sure what the appropriate reaction was but the random stuff was quite amusing!

Her DH not playing ball makes it even funnier

Ellie1015 · 31/12/2023 12:28

Did ye, aye?

Is a good response when you know they are exaggerating. Not sure it works everywhere but i am sure there will be a similar phrase. So well known here i am not sure I would have the guts to use it though.

mumda · 31/12/2023 12:29

I knew a 'cottage in France ' woman who could get that into every conversation.

Every conversation.

Therealjudgejudy · 31/12/2023 12:36

This thread is hilarious 😂

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/12/2023 12:39

Surprised she hasn't divorced him.

Mind you, knowing her, she would probably brag about the payout!!

Isometimeswonder · 31/12/2023 13:01

We had one at work. He would also steal any interesting tales someone else had told, and make them his own. Even if the original person was stood right there!

TyneTeas · 31/12/2023 13:07

Most of my side of the family is like this and I was well into being an adult before I realised it wasn't a perfectly normal way of having a conversation and how irritating it was.

I have worked quite hard to break the pattern myself, but I reckon there are probably still times I do this without realising as my calibration is likely still quite a bit off

I understand it that an Elevenerifer has done better than you, and a Ninerifer has had it worse.

If you've had an invite to a Buckingham Palace garden party, Elevenerife has had a private tea with the Queen/King.

If you've had a verruca, Ninerife almost had to have their foot amputated.

Ah. Now I get it!!

Thanks

CherryogDog · 31/12/2023 09:14

I know a ninerifer, any ailment, any bad experience you've had, she's had it a billion times worse.
Reminds me of the Dawn and French sketch where they're in the doctor's waiting room, one had a headache, the other a migraine, then an aneurism etc etc until one said she'd died 😄

Omg that’s hilarious Iv not seen that but I’m gonna find it thanks 🤣🤣🤣

Howbizzare22 · 31/12/2023 13:47

Surely a ninerifer would actually be someone who’s done the same as you but not as well? Like “Iv got that dress too but mines the cheap version”
someone saying their illness is worse is another elevenerifer? 🤔 Or maybe I’m way overthinking this 🤣🤣🤣
My brothers girlfriend is a massive elevenerifer -we all laugh it off now but before we realised she was one of these & massively exaggerating things it was extremely annoying because you’d be genuinely happy and proud of an achievement and she’d belittle it/removes it’s shine, steal your thunder and make you feel inadequate. Ugh.

FrillyGoatFluff · 31/12/2023 14:07

My neighbours are elevenerifers. They're a married couple and they're both like it.

Only when there's company round though, not when it's just them and us - then they're totally normal.

It's both hilarious and absolutely cringy at the same time

Sharrilanda · 31/12/2023 15:30

@CherryogDog oooh I love French & Saunders but can’t remember that one. Off to search! 😅

Hilarious that we have some in-house Elevenerifers on this thread 😉😂

Thank you cherry was just wondering if there was a term for people who always have it worse! I know a few of them
