Do you know any?
What’s the best approach to take when it is constant?

Going into the new year, am resolving to not just roll my eyes and keep quiet, but want to say something in the hope that they’ll actually stop.
Or am I asking for miracles here? 😆

Advice please wise MNs!

@LonelynSad - I think that's the thing. The kids don't understand when something like that is said and we're the ones that have to sort it out. I think a PP commented on narcissism and there have been other comments through the years from my DM that fit with that, it would take forever and be incredibly outing if I went through all her comments through the years though. Both of her siblings have now passed away which hasn't helped the comments. My sister never gets it like I do either.

Yes! I've always wondered about narcissism!

TurkeyTwizlers · 01/01/2024 12:53

It’s definitely a narc thing. When DH had been very poorly in hospital his brother couldn’t cope so pretended to have cancer. He had a lump and used it as an opportunity to go on and on about how terrible it would be for them and how would they cope. It wasn’t ever cancer, the follow up appointment was 6 months later, when DH rang him about him he’d forgotten that it was meant to be serious and the doctor had just said it was a cyst and to ignore it and he didn’t know why DH had rung up about it.
Cant stand other people getting attention.

@HirplesWithHaggis It was nothing to do with you! Go away!

And a peaceful and loving new year to you too. 😘

Back to work yesterday and the one upmanshipping spirit was well and truly in play!
Talk of how their family had a better Christmas than everyone else, because of “their way of doing things was the key to a successful day”, down to the timings of EVERYTHING 🤪

Of course now it’s going to be the true test of a die hard Elevenerifer - Holidays!
Shall I take one for the team and actually say we have booked Tenerife, to see if the penny drops? 😂

I think you should mention you're going to eleverife! 🤣

Browsing this thread I was thinking there were a few of these I remember from primary school. So I think it starts early. 🤔

Then I was wondering if those children I knew who had elevenerife tendencies grew out of it. But no, I reckon they're still at it.

So!? Did you?! Did you not ask her precisely why she believes her Christmas day was better than everyone else's? I'd have to pick that one apart. Bloody rude fucker. I realise you've posted this thread to be lighthearted but I'd be complaining to HR/the boss about this idiot. You shouldn't have to listen to this nonsense in order to do your job

sprigatito · 06/01/2024 18:18

@HumphreyCobblers DH and I are corpsing at "two shits Dave" 😂 in fact I need to message DS1 about it too.

I love it when these types meet other couples who are the same .. it is funny
Same as those who only want to talk about themselves , they meet their match sometimes and it becomes a bit of ' stand off ' as to how much they can talk over each other about themselves !

I think you'll find quite a lot of us gasped at your comment tbh. Who says "some kind of syndrome" in 2024?!

As for whether you "touched a nerve" - well, yes, in that your comment was particularly offensive and hurtful for ND people, those with mental health problems and those parenting children with SEN. Not the gotcha you thought it was.

My brother and our cousin don't get on for this exact reason. It's so funny to watch.

Oh that's great fun! I just order another drink and watch from the sidelines

@mumda Her name wasn't Kate was it? I know a Kate who does this, it's so tedious!

It'll take me a while to remember her name because she's "mrs holiday home in France" to us.

MrsTwatInAHat · 07/01/2024 15:25

What’s the problem with the word “syndrome“? Perfectly normal word to describe a medical or mental condition - and compulsive lying is or can be that. So can things like narcissism etc - just because someone may have a mental issue or condition doesn’t mean everyone has to find everything they do acceptable. And the poster who used the word syndrome was clearly being quite sympathetic in fact.

My exP had a colleague like this and he and his other colleagues just couldn’t believe how extreme it was - you could say anything at all and she’d come out with a more impressive story. She had also been in every major disaster you’ve ever heard of. Things that just could not be true, but when challenged she would absolutely insist. They realised that it must be some kind of mental problem or compulsion so tried not to be mean to her. But some elevenerifers aren’t that extreme, they’re just annoying one-upmanshippers.

I do owe you an apology, I should have double checked who I was quoting. I am really sorry I unjustly accused you.
