I love to get the decorations down on Boxing Day and get back to normal.
A bit of a clean and a good reset.
Ready to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in!

Ridiculous AlltheFs. So presumably you believe Muslims, Jews, Jehovah's witnesses should all have trees up for 12 days?

It absolutely is up to what the op believes. Christmas decorations have sod all to do with Christianity. The three wise men didn't bring the baby Jesus a Christmas tree, some tinsels and a baubles

Agree entirely, of course the OP's beliefs count for something in her house and her life. Crackers to think that they don't.

afaloren · 26/12/2023 11:18

I love Boxing Day so need my tree up for that. I’d take it down tomorrow but we’ve got people staying for NYE and DB wants it up for that.

Actually I find solstice more pivotal.

Wouldn't that put Christmas at the start of your year as it's after the pivot point of solstice? I see solstice as a pivot point and that's one of the reasons I see no need to rush to finish Christmas, 1st January means nothing to me.

I do love the annual froth over Christmas trees coming down on boxing day.

The psychoanalysis upthread is -ironically - completely mental.

I don't give a shit when people put their decorations up or down. I don't think it says anything about their character.

I do think it says a lot about your character if you get so incensed about people doing things differently to you though.

If you're happy still enjoying your Christmas why are you having a rant about this? Go and eat a mince pie and chill out.

I couldn't agree with this more. It seems so bizarre to be calling someone names etc for when they decide to remove their Christmas decorations. I mean, really?

It is pretty shit for the kids though, I'd have been really sad if my parents had done this.

As an adult do what you want, but if there are kids in the family its just miserly.

NoHeavenNoMore · 26/12/2023 11:34

I'd love to take mine down today but don't think I'd get away with it.

MintyfreshSW · 26/12/2023 11:56

PP is right that half the stress is trying to cram it all into a day. We celebrate lots of things through the whole month - Christmas food, hot chocolates, decorations, family.y favourite memories growing up were all the visits to family between Christmas and new year as it seemed to extend the joy of everything - a new selection box, another film, another board game, always ending in a New Year’s Eve party with the twinkling lights still up.
we take ours down first week of January - buy some more flowers and plants to start looking forward to spring, bur we do keep some fairy lights about just to get us through.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 26/12/2023 13:01

There's absolutely no way I would even contemplate taking our tree & decorations down today!

I'm in ireland & don't know anyone who does this. I think it must be a cultural thing?

Christmas does not begin in November for me, no matter what the shops / ads say. Our tree went up on 17th December & will be up until 9th Jan this year. We usually take it down on 6th but this year we're away until the 8th so we'll do it that weekend.

I know everyone does what works for them but personally I don't understand getting up on 26th & that's it Christmas is over! Christmas is a period not a day.

I adore our tree & have been collecting tree decorations for 20+ years now & they're like old friends when I see them each year.

Today is for turkey sandwiches, trifle, books, wine, fairy lights & naps! It's bliss.

I have to admit that these threads make me realise why so many people get super atressed over Christmas since everything has to be stuffed into 1 day. If people stopped pretending only 25th is Christmas, that would greatly helped them...

What do think people are stuffing into the 25th that needs to be spread out?

LadyWiddiothethird · 26/12/2023 13:16

Mine goes up the weekend before Christmas,so it was Christmas Eve this year,it will come down on the 6th January and it is always a real one,I keep it in the garden in between,in a big pot.

Well apperently all the joy and Christmas spirit. As there doesn't seem to be a lot hanging around!

brawnthesheep · 26/12/2023 13:19

Christmas has only just started so how can it be over?

Plus if you have a real tree the council collections in my areas aren’t until Jan.

culture of commercialism perhaps?

aviato · 26/12/2023 13:24

Mine is coming down today, want my space back and it just makes me happier to get back to normal.

brawnthesheep · 26/12/2023 13:27

I like it down before the new year anyway. I prefer to go into January with everything away and clean and tidy!

Why does a tree make things dirty & messy?

TitaniasAss · 26/12/2023 13:28

There are a surprising number of people seem to think that Christmas is just about their tree and that Christmas is 'over' if the tree is down. 😂

TitaniasAss · 26/12/2023 13:29

This thread is bonkers.

Im probably guilty of that tbh as I suppose the “tree” is such a Christmas marker. So for me it would be weird to go to parties or host without any decor. And we do Christmas activities like ice skating, panto etc this week as dc only finished school on the 21st.

TitaniasAss · 26/12/2023 13:38

@brawnthesheep I get that, my point is really that not everyone feels that way and some people are acting like the OP is quite dreadful for taking her tree down. I love Christmas, but it's about more than a brightly decorate tree for me. It's lovely that some people keep their trees up longer (I'll have ours up til New Year), but I don't think the OP is ruining her children's Christmas by taking hers down when it suits them IYKWIM?

brawnthesheep · 26/12/2023 13:45

@TitaniasAss I do see what you are saying. I suppose I read the OP as “Christmas” is over rather than it’s very much Christmas but just no tree.

Chilicabbage · 26/12/2023 13:54

alwaystroubleonmn · 26/12/2023 13:13

Everything. Presents, big roast, christmas tv, as many family members as possible, fun things with family, church service, walks. So much to do in one day I would crash out in the middle.
Tbh I come from where Christmas start on 24th with presents in the evening, nice dinner. Roasts and families are on 25th and 26th. When it's spread out over 3 days it feels less overwhelming and is quite calmer.

FindingMeno · 26/12/2023 14:45

We all feel so lovely and calm now.
There's reading, showering, napping, snacking and imbibing going on still.
Just no tree and decs and a blissful peaceful day!

No, mine will come down New Year’s Day probably

Alondra · 26/12/2023 14:54

I'm ready to take it down but long traditions stop me. 😕 I'll put all decorations away on the 7th of January after the Epiphany.

This will be us tomorrow. There is a whole lot of FA happening here today, hence tomorrow being packing away day. I am a bit of a pita about the packing away so it takes a while and today it seemed a bit too energetic.

My dogs will be much happier. I had to move one dog bed to make place for the tree and ddog is pretty grumpy about it.

I am on leave until well into the New Year so it makes no difference to me as to whether the decs are still up or not. Still will have that nice relaxing festive feel. Just with more space.

For those that it upsets that it is too soon.. . I don't have small DC so no one here is going to be all that phased.
It's quite okay if other people want to do something different to how you do it. There is really no law (except perhaps a MN law) that you cannot take down your tree before January.
