I love to get the decorations down on Boxing Day and get back to normal.
A bit of a clean and a good reset.
Ready to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in!

Mine will come down on 2nd Jan if I get my way and on 12th Night if DH gets his. I like it to stay up until New Year celebrations are over, then love to start the New Year from 2nd with a clean slate. But DH insists on 12 Days of Christmas.

And will be decorating and buying for Easter in the next few weeks.

Award for most depressing post, but sadly true. Endless marketing ploys taking full commercial advantage of our need to reconnect. My friend is decorating for new year complete with presents. Will it never stop? Can we not just breathe and live without the near constant pressure to facilitate all of this which now stretches the entire year. I don’t want to even think about Easter until mid March and I can see some daffodils and cherry blossom.

There seems to have been a trend in recent years towards putting the tree up earlier and taking it down earlier - I guess if you get a real tree in November it's going to be somewhat worse for wear by Boxing Day.

I really dislike it and am firmly in the "stays up until Twelfth Night" camp - my tree went up on the 17th.

I blame the retail Industry. Barring those who find Christmas hard because of loss or illness, or kids with SEN, people whose marriage is breaking down etc, I don’t understand the rush to get Christmas over with. Even those who say they’re back at work later this week - so what? Most people put their tree UP while they were still working so I don’t see the difference.

for most people not in difficult circumstances , if you take your tree down today for no good practical or emotional reason, I would probably psychoanalyse you as a fan of shopping, an advertiser’s dream, highly suggestible to trends, love Instagram, enjoy the idea of something (and planning for it) rather than the thing itself, maybe the type of person who likes to “get in there first” with something, someone who chases happiness but is never quite satisfied and someone who can’t just relax and enjoy the moment. I would bet you’re one of those people who spend all of a gig or show filming it or chasing the perfect shot for social media rather than just enjoying being there and watching.

I agree. Christmas Day was not even finished yesterday when the adverts were already ‘done’ with Christmas and had moved onto holidays and sales. I hate living in a culture consumed by commercialism that cheapens even the most wholesome of celebrations.

BerriesNutsConkers · 26/12/2023 10:26

We like to put our decorations up closer to Christmas. I love the time between Christmas and New year. No work, nice food to eat and acceptable to have Irish coffee in the morning!
We had a manic Christmas day yesterday and will be visiting my side of the family today for another Christmas Dinner, gifts and party games.
I would hate to take the tree down before New Year

slavetothekittens · 26/12/2023 10:32

Tree only went up a few days before Christmas and will be staying up until 6th Jan.

FindingMeno · 26/12/2023 10:39

So enjoying reading all these posts.
Even the ones that call me names!
Shows we are all so wonderfully different!!!
Fwiw I think the main driver for me is small space and displaced furniture. I don't cope well with it ( neurodiverse?) and the rest of the family is quite happy.
I worked my arse off in the lead up to Christmas and I don't intend to return with such a big chaotic task hanging over me!

EatenbytheYuleCat · 26/12/2023 10:40

Nope, my Christmas tree will not come down until Twelfth Night. It's Christmas here from Midwinter's Eve until Twelfth Night, so the tree will come down then, though I'll probably hang on to so some of the greenery and twinkly lights until Candlemas. I find them cheering in the dark bit of the year. But if an uncluttered house lifts your spirits more, then crack on with packing it all away and enjoy the space! There shouldn't be pressure either way.

Beezknees · 26/12/2023 10:44

God, no. I'm not doing any work on Boxing day. It's still relax time. I'll take it down probably the weekend after new year.

Chilicabbage · 26/12/2023 10:44

Tip for small spaces.
Wall half tree. It's shape like normal tree but flat from one side, taking half the space. I just move my monstera into different oom and put half tree instead of her.

Almondmum · 26/12/2023 10:45

I do love the annual froth over Christmas trees coming down on boxing day.

The psychoanalysis upthread is -ironically - completely mental.

I don't give a shit when people put their decorations up or down. I don't think it says anything about their character.

I do think it says a lot about your character if you get so incensed about people doing things differently to you though.

If you're happy still enjoying your Christmas why are you having a rant about this? Go and eat a mince pie and chill out.

AlltheFs · 26/12/2023 10:45

It absolutely baffles me that so many people are so poorly educated that they have no concept of advent (despite stuffing chocolate advent calendars all December) and the 12 days of Christmas.

I am not religious at all in terms of beliefs but can’t imagine being so dim about a festival that is pivotal to our society.

Chilicabbage · 26/12/2023 10:46

I have to admit that these threads make me realise why so many people get super atressed over Christmas since everything has to be stuffed into 1 day. If people stopped pretending only 25th is Christmas, that would greatly helped them...

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 26/12/2023 10:48

Absolutely not. It's still Christmas and Hogmanay is yet to come.

Actually I find solstice more pivotal.

New years eve or day would be OK, before the new term. But still within the 12 days which just started yesterday, boxing day is madness.
Saying that I wouldn't be moving loads of stuff for a tree, it fits nicely in a corner and doesn't get in the way much.

Almondmum · 26/12/2023 10:54

Why would you assume people who take their tree down on boxing day don't know about advent?

My grandmother always took her tree down on boxing day. She spent Christmas day in chapel. 2 services I think she went to so she certainly knew all about advent.

Allthecatsandcosyblankets · 26/12/2023 10:54

I take mines down on my partners first day back at work which is usually 27th. I put ours up 1st December.

Thanks to shops and commercialism christmas is very much a thing in November now so by boxing day I am done.

I couldn't keep mines up in January as I see new year as the beginning of a fresh new year and having anything from December, my tree or decorations would just feel unorganised to me.

Everyone's different, everyone has a different christmas to everyone else, some have christmas alone, some stay with family, some have a big tradional meal, some have a take out. Some get lots of gifts with a massive family around them and some are grieving or visiting loved ones in hospital. So who gives af how or when anyone decides they are done with christmas or carrying on the festivities x

AlltheFs · 26/12/2023 10:54

FindingMeno · 26/12/2023 10:49

It’s not about you and your beliefs. It’s how our society is structured around the Christian church and calendar.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 26/12/2023 10:57

Hahaha no I’m still in my pjs stuffing my face and drinking Asti and it’ll be the same every day until next weekend now (outside of working of course) 😂😂

Almondmum · 26/12/2023 10:59

Ridiculous AlltheFs. So presumably you believe Muslims, Jews, Jehovah's witnesses should all have trees up for 12 days?

It absolutely is up to what the op believes. Christmas decorations have sod all to do with Christianity. The three wise men didn't bring the baby Jesus a Christmas tree, some tinsels and a baubles

seasidegirl83 · 26/12/2023 11:01

Taking it down on boxing day doesn't make you miserable, each to their own!
Mine comes down on 29th. My youngest has his birthday on the 30th so I put up his balloons and banners and make it all about him then.
I like it down before the new year anyway. I prefer to go into January with everything away and clean and tidy!

Ratfinkstinkypink · 26/12/2023 11:02

Mine will stay up until just after New Year it went up on 30th November. Yes, it takes up space. Yes, things are displaced and it drives me nuts but, and it's a big but for me, my 3 year old is registered blind, is unable to walk(can't even sit unaided) but boy can he roll. It is a newly learned skill and, despite his sight loss, he can see the twinkle of the tree lights and they encourage him to move and destroy the tree .

alwaystroubleonmn · 26/12/2023 11:02

Yeah, I'm happy to take the tree down on 27th - but will probably be begged to leave it in place till the 1st. And I couldn't give a toss about advent - know it, lived it when I was a child and it plays no part in my decisions now. But if it matters to other posters, I'm happy for them to feel like they are doing it properly and wish them joy and comfort feeling self-righteous - it's a lovely thing for religion to encourage.

Deebee90 · 26/12/2023 11:03

Mines coming down the 28th because I’m working night shifts on new years and won’t have the energy afterwards to do. Want to start the year fresh.
