Oh my god, what do I do.....wallet opened by sibling hoke for Christmas - money card stolen

I have a sibling home for Christmas.

Who went out to see his friends and he got drunk. I don't know what time of the night he came home at. He is still not gone to bed.

That's not the problem. I had my wallet on the kitchen table. I didn't anticate him to steal from it. I woke this morning to find the wallet open. My bank card gone. I had some small amount of cash in it too but not a lot. It was about 60 euro. I could write off the cash notes. The card - no way.

I asked him if he saw my card but he said no and he's still too drunk.

I encouraged him to go to bed.

It might be a case where I will have to wait for him to sober up. And ask again. Wait til he leaves his room and check his pockets maybe.

I had my card just yesterday. I didn't leave my home all weekend because I was sick. I did online shopping. I had my wallet in my lap. I was in the sitting room. I put the card back into my wallet.

Card from wallet gone now.

It's Monday and a week before Christmas.

Do I wait for him to sober up and search for the card later on tonight?

Or do I get onto the bank.

I have a spare account and card with revolut.
Will I top up my account with an estimate of what I need this week and contact my bank in the hope of getting a new card.

It's very fucking mindless. Getting drunk and stealing from my wallet.

He's not like this when he's sober.

He didn't use the card. I checked my app.

So why did he take it?

Azandme · 18/12/2023 15:35

Asking your now sober BROTHER to return the cash he took from your wallet whilst drunk isn't "cruel" - it's the absolute right thing to do.

If he's as lovely as you claim he is he'll hand it over with an apology, and that's the end of it. If he would view this as cruel, he's not lovely, he's manipulative.

If your mum views it as cruel she has a favourite, and it's not you.

MadeOfAllWork · 18/12/2023 16:18

He's not even 48 hours home and I just can't be cruel at this point in time to him especially when he was drunk and he likely won't remember.

He’s not been in your house for 48 hours and already he’s been out on the piss, come home drunk, woken the house up knowing some people have work in the morning, and taken money from his sibling. Sorry but this is a piss take.

So he came home drunk, needed to pay taxi, messed up your wallet, took your money and paid taxi and went to bed maybe? I’d wait to see what he says when he’s sober.

My thoughts exactly. And probably thought it was mum or dad's wallet, so thought it wouldn't be an issue?

He didn't really go to bed. He stayed up singing and muttering. I got up to go to work and encouraged him to go to bed. Then I realised I was just too I'll to even go to work myself and had to go back to bed myself.

perhaps if you hadn’t spent half the night feverishly tapping away on mumsnet… you would have been well enough not to bail on work again

he didn’t take it

I wonder of he went to get money for the cab (not right but maybe he had no cash) and knocked the purse off the counter and just shoved everything back in. Or he knocked it off the counter whilst drunk and shoved everything back in. I wouldn't be surprised if the money is found as well.

SilverAntelope · 18/12/2023 17:57

I'm not going to create hell over this.

I am not afraid of him

These two statements don't make much sense. What's wrong with saying "some of my money is missing from my wallet, what happened?"

How is that creating hell?

I don't think it was for a cab. I got up earlier in the night and he was home and I didn't see a mess with my purse at that stage. I think he was home for a while before he went to snoop in my wallet. It wasn't just money in my wallet. I had a box of money was well that i put cash into for the payment of bills. That money is gone too.

Don't be such a pushover! I'd hit the fucking roof.

Chuck a bucket of water over him to get him up and send him to the cash point to pay me back with a good earful for daring to steal from me to start with.

None of this letting him sleep it off bollocks, he'd be out the front door and told not to come back without cash to pay me back and he better be sober when he does.

Wow! Throw water on him. Some people on MN really don’t joke, do they? I hope I never cross you in any way, @Balloonhearts

Surely the money is still in the house though, he hadn't gone anywhere to spend it by the time you found that it was missing. Why can't you get it back from him?

The whole situation is very strange

ElevenSeven · 18/12/2023 07:17

Awww, is he just a little scallywag who can’t help himself when he’s drunk, but he’s a lovely, lovely lad really? It’ll be his alco friends fault really.

Bless him.

wtf.

This. Your mum has really done a number on you, hasn’t she? Conditioning you to put up with your alcoholic shithead of a brother doing anything up to and including stealing from you, anything to avoid a fuss.

This isn’t normal, and no functioning family would accept brothers stealing off them without a murmur. Out of interest, what would happen if you did rock the boat? Everyone would blame you for daring to mention it?

FiveShelties · 18/12/2023 20:39

That money is gone too.

Of course it is.😂

MadeOfAllWork · 18/12/2023 20:56

I’m assuming he’s sobered up by now. What did he say?

Anisette · 19/12/2023 09:36

I'm just going to write off that cash ane be done with it and know in future not to leave it around the place.

You know he's got your cash, you saw it spilling out of his pockets. Why on earth would you not ask for it back - or indeed go in whilst he was sleeping and just take it?
