Victoria Atkins has referred to junior doctors as doctors in training on bbc this morning. I’m sure that’s going to win them over.

Good to know she understands the NHS so well. What an idiot.

Notonthestairs · 21/12/2023 09:46

Well if you take Aitkens at her word the 'doctors in training' taking strike action won't impact on service levels - they are just training after all. The real work would be done by others.

Seriously though, why would it be difficult for her to understand that they are qualified doctors who are working towards specialist qualifications?

She would have qualified as a barrister after pupilage. The years between that and gaining a KC wouldn't categorise her as a 'barrister in training'.

Thick or duplicitous?

newnamethanks · 21/12/2023 09:46

I can't take much more of these chancers and chizzlers parading their ignorance, what is the absolute latest date that a GE must be held? It's so wearing.

Notonthestairs · 21/12/2023 09:47

I suppose you can be thick AND duplicitous.

I suppose you can be thick AND duplicitous.

You can and I think Atkins is both. Her broadcast interviews are just unbelievable. I thought it was much more intellectually challenging to qualify as a barrister than it obviously is. She and Braverman inspire very little confidence in the profession.

I think it might even be next January! As in January 2025...

It is! But I doubt they'll go for that as it would mean campaigning over Christmas

itsgettingweird · 21/12/2023 11:16

I heard a discussion on tv the other day where they felt it would be May.

Warm enough and before the mass channel crossings that occur in the summer. It's thought if they waited until October it would be suicide for them.

Surely it's suicide for them whenever they call it

BIossomtoes · 21/12/2023 11:20

I reckon it will be May. I really ought to put some money on it.

Notonthestairs · 21/12/2023 11:30

I'm beginning to think they'll try to hold on to the bitter end and hang the consequences. Why would they care what inheritance they leave the party or the country?

That might change if rebellion(s) within the party threaten the leadership.

But really I have no idea - their strategies don't make an awful lot of sense to me!

IClaudine · 21/12/2023 11:35

I think it will be May too.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 21/12/2023 11:36

I still think they'll engineer some crisis to justify passing emergency legislation that allows them to stay in power beyond January 2025.

Only if they want civil war.

Not going to happen. This lot haven't the competence to pull off something like that, and a fair number of them have a foot out of the door already.

Notonthestairs · 21/12/2023 12:19

I didn't say their strategies work 😁

Given the difficulty Sunak had with filling cabinet and other ministerial positions in the autumn and the 6month lay off ministers need to have before taking up another job, many of his MPs seem to be preparing for a May election. (we can hope right?).

No! No! No! No!

Be careful, apparantly it is insulting to suggest that someone is behaving like a Trump supporter.

It’s more of a ‘bad lifestyle choices’ kind of suicide. Very drawn out and utterly painful for anyone unfortunate enough to be obliged to witness/be hit by the waves of consequences of their choices.

Cornettoninja · 21/12/2023 13:10

jgw1 · 21/12/2023 11:59

They have strategies?

Oh yes. You can’t think of them as one coherent group. You have a very vocal hoard (more of an annoying posse now) of little englanders who would love nothing more than 70’s BBC sitcoms to be reality whilst a pack of scavenging hyenas shelter under them wringing out whatever they can into their bank accounts.

Neither group are particularly bothered about perception because anyone who points out their faults is just wrong. This is what makes the possibility of hanging on till someone stamps on their fingers to get them off the ledge not completely implausible.
