'Almost as cross as someone trying to justify someone taking their own life as "one of those things".

I've no idea how you've taken that from what I said. Posters were trying, as always, to blame the Government. Suggesting a bed and less than luxurious shelter may have tipped the balance. I merely suggested suicide is sadly a bit more complex than that and blame is not helpful or even actually appropriate.

I'm sorry for every person who takes their own life and families left to pick up the pieces. Let's not suggest it was because his bedroom was too small.

That is literally very very rarely said at an inquest where a qualified person will weigh up ALL the contributory factors, including but not limited to poverty, living conditions, external pressures, separation from support networks etc as aggravating factors to someone's metal wellbeing.

There will be an inquest. Perhaps wait.

Stop the boats, not stop the asylum seekers of whom 75% of claims are approved.

It may have escaped your notice that asylum seekers by an large arrive by boats, because they have no other choices.

Now we could have a sensible discussion about how the UK government could arrange alternative transport to the UK for those wishing to claim asylum here if you like?

Notonthestairs · 14/12/2023 11:31

“If you make the elections about the issues of the far right, notably the “problem” of immigration, the far right wins.”

Which is exactly why the Government want to campaign on immigration - not their 13 year history.

I note that Scott Benton has disappeared form the main page of BBC News already.

Cornettoninja · 14/12/2023 11:38

You're getting mixied up with the people traffickers, now they are indeed demonised as they should be

it’s not the people traffickers being sent to Rwanda, it’s not the people traffickers being kept on boat-camps, its not the people traffickers fundamental changes in our laws are being aimed at, it’s not the people traffickers the slogan ‘stop the boats’ is aimed at, it’s not the people traffickers the government boasts figures of stopping, it’s not the people traffickers this government ever choose to concentrate their rhetoric on.

I think I know why the government doesn't focus on people traffickers. People traffickers are enterprising business people who have seen an opportunity and taken it. Much like the mates of those in government who saw an opportunity with covid PPE and took it.

The Prime Minister will not replace the Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work

Sources claim "work will be led by one of the existing ministers in the department."

Please understand 🇬🇧 14 million adults & children are now deemed undeserving of support & representation

Immigration on the other hand requires a plethora 🙄

Goodness he will upset those who maintain that all that was needed to solve covid was a Cabinet Minister for Children.

Given that disabled people are on the government's hit list, maybe it's not surprising that no-one wants the job of defending the indefensible.

Notonthestairs · 14/12/2023 11:47

My thoughts precisely IClaudine.

Minister of Silly Walks.

On a serious note... that article is absolutely shocking. We knew it was bad, but the targeting of RNLI, Border Force, fishermen etc by far right wankers is just beyond words.

I blame the Government, Johnson, Farage... they are using human lives as a political football trying to shore up support for the worst of the Tories for a future GE.

Roussette · 14/12/2023 15:16

This Government aren't even pretending any more

Rishi Sunak will visit Rome this weekend to attend a rightwing political gathering organised by Giorgia Meloni’s party, PA Media reports. PA says:
The prime minister will meet his Italian counterpart for a discussion on illegal migration as part of the trip on Saturday, where he will be among the high-profile guests scheduled to appear at the Brothers of Italy-backed gathering

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is also expected to attend the annual Atreju event, which has been frequented by former Trump ally Steve Bannon and Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán in the past.

Hmmm you are judged by the company you keep as my lovely Dad used to say.
says a great deal about Rishi.

Cornettoninja · 14/12/2023 15:32

What a lovely gathering of narrow minded, self absorbed arseholes that sounds like. I bet it’s a tiresome conversation of elevenirifing all over the place. If there is a god that’s the place for a well timed lightening strike.

Roussette · 14/12/2023 15:34

Absolutely. Brothers of Italy has its roots in the post World War II neo fascist Italian Social movement.

Fucking hell I've just got your point.

There is a limit on numbers of Ministers.

The Government has prioritised Minister for the Daily Mail over having a Minister for the Disabled.

Notonthestairs · 14/12/2023 15:46

I should add we can have 109 PAID ministers.

I bet they've hit the limit and decided the Disabled can do without.

Risk factors for suicide include: inadequate housing, poor mental health, low educational attainment, unemployment, loneliness and low social mobility.

Exactly.

So fleeing your home from persecution and then spending time not knowing your future and for how long that will last is a massive risk factor.

It really doesn't matter about food and shelter.

Food and shelter are no good if you have no idea how long you're going to be in the situation you are in.

Janiie · 14/12/2023 11:23

Stop the boats, not stop the asylum seekers of whom 75% of claims are approved.

So they want to stop the boats, not the asylum seekers? Well that's an easy fix then. No need for all this Rwanda nonsense. Allow asylum serkers to buy a seat on a cross channel ferry instead of in a small boat. It would mean 100% success at stopping the boats and 100% success at stopping the people traffickers.

DuncinToffee · 14/12/2023 17:00
