Crumpets - how do you take yours ?

I don't normally buy crumpets but this morning I saw some sourdough ones in the reduced section in Morrison's so I thought it would be rude not to, especially as I bought a fresh block of Lurpak yesterday. I have been known to top them with blue Stilton and potted beef but I generally just use butter. Not too much, mind, as it gets everywhere!

They must be adequately toasted too. Underdone or nuked crumpets are just no good.

Butter and marmite 😋

Lightly toasted, three minutes only, then lashings of salted butter pressed down into the holes. There is a real art in cramming the maximum amount of butter into the crumpet.

True fact.

Double toasted, loads of butter and then either honey or bovril depending if I'm in the mood for sweet or savoury,

the same as most of bread produce: toasted, buttered with Lurpak and covered with chunks of extra mature cheddar cheese.

Coastalcreeksider · 30/11/2023 16:23

Mmmmm Lurpak ... 😁

mondaytosunday · 30/11/2023 16:42

My daughter has one with Bovril one with jam and eats them together. I'm partial to both plus occasionally honey. My sister just has butter.

TheTecknician · 30/11/2023 16:44

I've had three crumpets with Lurpak this afternoon. I'll scoff the other three tomorrow.

Does anybody have low fat spread or even (shudders) margarine on crumpets ? I hope not. Should be illegal anyway!

Butter and marmite accompanied by a slice of a string cheddar.

I don't like them overdone.

DilemmaDelilah · 30/11/2023 17:16

Very well toasted, nice and crispy, with lashings of butter and a lake of golden syrup.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/11/2023 20:48

Toasted and just salted butter.

A relative used to insist on butter and Golden Syrup.

Wendyspotatopeeler · 30/11/2023 20:51

Double toasted with a slight crunch. Slightly salted butter with a tiny smidge of marmite.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/11/2023 20:52

Double toasted, butter, thin application of marmite. With either tea or coffee (depends on what I fancy) at around 11am.

KohlaParasaurus · 30/11/2023 20:54

Well toasted then spread with a sweet chutney and slices of whatever cheese is to hand.

Or chop up some smoked salmon while the crumpet is toasting, then spread the crumpet with cream cheese and pile the salmon on top.

TheBluestEye2 · 30/11/2023 21:01

Nicely toasted and dripping with butter.

caringcarer · 30/11/2023 21:57

With thick pate on.

notprincehamlet · 30/11/2023 22:02

I'll pass thanks. Horrible things, like eating a toasted slipper.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/11/2023 22:04

Crispy with Kerry gold & Marmite, that's it, no other way I have them.

Lovingtheglitter · 30/11/2023 22:08

Double dipped so it's crunchy on the outside but still soft inside, with lots of salted butter and marmite 😋

TheTecknician · 01/12/2023 13:15

Has anyone eaten or bought crumpets today ?

OP posts:
Gettincoldouthere · 01/12/2023 13:16

Burnt, salted butter and orange jam.

Hobbesmanc · 01/12/2023 13:19

Having them now. I think crumpets are one of the few products where basic ones are superior to premium ones. The finest sour dough ones for example taste flabby.

They need to be slightly charred at the edges. Salted butter. One with cathedral cheddar spread one with lemon curd. That's my winning combo

HuggeRealFire491 · 01/12/2023 13:21

I like the crumpets that are in seasonal shapes, they taste better !

Rabbits for Easter
Trees for Christmas
Dinosaurs

Butter, Nutella, jam

GetYourBaublesOut · 01/12/2023 13:23

As a trilogy:

well toasted...

  • one with just butter (the starter)
  • one with butter and peanut butter (the main course)
  • one with butter and jam (pudding)
AdoraBell · 01/12/2023 13:25

Super well done, base has to be crispy and top not quite burnt. Lots of butter and once that’s melted apricot preserve or a strong cheddar melted under the grill.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 01/12/2023 13:31

A flaccid crumpet is awful. We have a crumpet setting on a toaster at work but it only toasts one side. What's that about?!

I like them smothered in salted butter and also with scrambled egg. I've made them myself before now, but bought are better and a lot less faff.
