This 'brutal' cold ...

Has anyone else had it...?
My timeline has been..

3 days of awful ear ache (zero sleep due to pain)
Day 4 nose started dripping like a tap
Day 5 dry cough started, nose still dripping
Day 6 Sinus pain, headache, nose switching between bunged and dripping, phlegmy cough, nausea and mild to moderate body aches.

I can honestly say I have NEVER EVER had a cold like it.

I don't have the cough. I think mine is more sinus related as my eyes hurt and my teeth/jaw have been hurting today. Also I seem to get awful back pain when I get ill these days. Little one has said her ear hurts tonight so sounds like she's not over it yet either!

filthypride · 12/12/2023 02:43

Still coughing. Turned into a dry wheezy tickly cough, not impressed at all.

Needing my inhaler way too much for my liking.

After having the cold for 4 weeks…symptoms returned on Friday. I tested positive last night for covid :(

So the everlasting horrible wasn’t covid.

Fed up now feeling crap :(

So I had this stupid virus thing (that's what my doctor called it) from 20/11 to 5/12 i finally became snot free. Out of nowhere, yesterday I've developed a stupid stupid hacking cough. It's gotten worse today. I've been in bed since 4/12 with a badly sprained ankle so I've not caught anything else.

Is this just the gift that keeps on giving? Hopefully it's just this cough a few days. Hoping it's better tomorrow

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 14/12/2023 05:55

Dh just getting over it, I have what seems to be a milder version. Feeling better ish today. Hope everybody is better soon.

JadeSeahorse · 14/12/2023 06:04

OMG!

So sorry but really pleased I am not alone.

Started a week ago with scratchy throat, really fuzzy head etc. which then led to hacking, chesty cough, nose full of mucus, one minute boiling hot then not and feeling absolutely dreadful all over.

The coughing and sniffling are horrendous coupled with fact that I feel like I have swallowed broken glass.

Have done 2 tests both negative so not covid but haven’t felt this rough in years. Can’t even go to bed as it’s too uncomfortable to lay down. ☹️

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 14/12/2023 09:49

You poor thing @JadeSeahorse . At some points I was only able to sleep very elevated have you tried that? Sudafed nasal spray stopped the tap nose (read the pack, don't take more than 3 days and apparently it can be addictive). I carried an olbas oil tissue with me at all times too, sniffed regularly.

I seem to have a crackle type wheeze on breathing out. I'm pissed off. Tomorrow is a new day.

Any positive recovery stories?

Beeswaxed · 14/12/2023 09:54

5 weeks, sinusitis with a weeks worth of antibiotics and it’s still going strong.

JadeSeahorse · 14/12/2023 09:54

Cheers @Truthashardassteel!

At the moment I am sleeping on the sofa downstairs - despite having 3 spare beds - as it's the only way I can get relatively comfortable and I can definitely relate to the cackly breathing which describes it perfectly.

Sick of feeling so washed out! 😷🤧😡

JadeSeahorse · 14/12/2023 09:56

So sorry, should read TruthThatsHardAsSteel

Have been ill for over three weeks now, feeling awful again today, DH and I were completely wiped out for two weeks and both still have a horrible dry cough and DH has lingering sinus pain. Negative for COVID but who knows really.

I am asthmatic and used to lingering coughs in the winter, but I am waking up at night with it and it isn’t how it normally presents, using a humidifier every night in the bedroom but feel constant irritation in my throat even when I am not actually coughing.

QuestionableMouse · 14/12/2023 15:09

Something else is starting now - my throat feels like it's been sandpapered 😕 still testing neg for covid, just really hoping it's not tonsillitis!

piscofrisco · 14/12/2023 16:17

I'm on week 4 of this-had felt better the last two days. Today woke up with a temperature, shivery, achey, and sore throat again. Brain like porridge.Fucks sake.

This is me right now! Going to do a covid test in a bit, but I'm fully expecting it to be negative! 😕

Owen456 · 14/12/2023 23:21

6 weeks of the chronic cough and ear infection with alternating sinus pain and sore throat and only just getting over it now and feeling normal

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 15/12/2023 02:05

Has anyone reversed back into this from bring seemingly fine for a week or so? I've started coughing up mucus. It's a choking, headache inducing cough. I'm really run down at the minute, just don't need this.

It's awful reading peoples stories 😭.

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 15/12/2023 06:48

I've had a week of feeling mostly OK, and now a phlegmy cough is starting up again. I don't know if it never completely went away or this is something new.

Oh no. I know mine isn't new as I haven't been out of the house! Hoping it passes quickly 🙏

cuthbertthecat · 15/12/2023 09:57

I am at the stage of trying to work out if I need to make a gp appointment. Week 4 maybe and the cough is atrocious still.

Everything else is fine - maybe I am tiring easily but I've been ill with a few things since October and I'm so run down. Otherwise I feel ok except for the bastard cough. At night especially so I'm not sleeping. My chest is constantly tight but I've pulled my chest muscles with all the bastard coughing.

I don't want to waste an appointment if it's just going to be 'it's viral, it takes ages to shift'. But it improved then stopped improving.

QuestionableMouse · 15/12/2023 10:06

I made an appointment to see the nurse - she listened to my chest, said I sounded congested and asked that I provide a mucus sample! I did, and got another round of antibiotics. It's usually worth getting checked!

Papyrophile · 15/12/2023 11:58

I made DH call the GP because he wasn't improving. When they triaged him, he was called in immediately, and put on antibiotics, because it was turning into bronchitis.

muddlingthrou · 15/12/2023 12:37

Ugh what fresh hell is this. Toddler DD started with a high temp two weeks ago that wasn't shifting. Then DH went down with flu like symptoms even though he had the flu jab this year and usually has the constitution of an ox!

I thought I'd got away with just a mild sore throat and feeling a bit rubbish... had a few days of feeling fine then bam! DD gets diagnosed with pneumonia and gets antibiotics, and I've been getting worse and worse over the past week. Got shivers to begin with and now feeling like the worst covid ever though I'm testing negative.

How are people getting any sleep?! I wake up coughing my guts out regardless of how much I prop my head up. My chest and ears are crackling and my nose is like a tap. I've never felt so ill 😩

TurningtheLightOff · 15/12/2023 13:11

I’m now at the end of week five and apart from remnants of a cough late at night, I’m feeling much better. There were a couple of days in the first couple of weeks where my chest felt tight but other than that, it’s been limited to my head, nose and threat. Definitely don’t waste time waiting if you are finding breathing difficult - see a GP. Viral infections can bed down and turn to pneumonia.

Hope everyone feels better soon!

wintering · 15/12/2023 13:36

I'm at 4 weeks now. Had a set of antibiotics in week 2 as had developed a chest infection. At the end of week 2 I pulled something in my chest when coughing and this has continued to hurt like hell till now. Went to see GP again mid week 3 and they said my chest had cleared and to give it time. The cough and the pain whenever I do anything is still continuing and not getting better. Should I see GP again or just give it time.
