This 'brutal' cold ...

Has anyone else had it...?
My timeline has been..

3 days of awful ear ache (zero sleep due to pain)
Day 4 nose started dripping like a tap
Day 5 dry cough started, nose still dripping
Day 6 Sinus pain, headache, nose switching between bunged and dripping, phlegmy cough, nausea and mild to moderate body aches.

I can honestly say I have NEVER EVER had a cold like it.

Have you never ever had a cold before? This sounds absolutely normal to me for a bad cold. Try having walking Pneumonia!

Ah see I have had walking pneumonia twice, hospitalised once, 5 weeks off work between the 2 and about 5 weeks recovery time afterwards each time and I maintain this cold that is going around, which I currently have, is an absolute cunt of a cold.

OP. I’m with you, it’s awful! And completely bloody drug resistant! Sudafed is basically sweets at this point! Rest up and feel better!

Papyrophile · 30/11/2023 14:57

DH has had it for three weeks, then it turned to bronchitis. It's easing thanks to antibiotics (he phoned surgery, was triaged, called in immediately for a face to face, and was home via the pharmacy in just over an hour; he does have an impressively thick medical file -- but the NHS at it's very best!). Still coughing and grumpy though. I seem to have dodged it so far but I am not planning to return from the spare room for a couple more days.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 30/11/2023 14:57

I’m on week 4 of whatever this virus is (tested neg for covid) and still have a hacking cough which makes me sound as if I smoke 4 packs of Marlboro a day and am 90.

I started with it at the beginning of a 48 hour shift at work, first time I’ve ever had to ring a manager and get someone in to take over. Aching all over, red hot temp, burning eyes, stiff neck and muscles spasming. The next day I starting throwing up then bizarrely felt fine that night.

Day after that classic cold symptoms of tight chest, cough, runny nose etc which won’t seem to go. Back to work tomorrow and I’m dreading it.

piscofrisco · 30/11/2023 15:28

I have it. Headache, body aches, temp, heavy chest, cough, ear aches. Week 3. Plus now a perforated ear drum, tinnitus and vertigo. Other than when I and covid at Easter this is the worst I've ever felt. Negative on the Covid test.

PokeyLaFarge · 30/11/2023 15:35

Feel dreadful 😷
Had covid for the 2nd time in September and haven't really felt well since
Dc2 now has it, too
No sleep at all last night 😕

Oh no, poor you! I had it last September / October and I wasn't really back to normal for about 6 months. I was easily tired and so out of breath.

I see an Elevenerife has arrived in the chat …

It sounds really nasty, OP, and I’m doing my very best to avoid it, but everywhere I go there are disgusting bloody people hacking and sneezing all over the place - no tissues, no masks, no consideration for anyone else.

I watched a woman make her way round the supermarket yesterday wet-coughing repeatedly into her own hand, then using the same hand to open fridge doors and rummage through the fruit & veg 🤮. It’s like covid never happened.

This. I would actually really like a public health campaign to remind people of how to behave like a civilised human being. I think some people are so determined to show that Covid is 'over' (it's really not) that they almost take a perverse pride in acting like some kind of orc now.

Lots of us are at risk from all sorts of things. I wear a mask in supermarkets because of people like this but how hard is it cough into your elbow ffs?!

Theproofofthepudding · 30/11/2023 15:51

My middle ear problem has just cleared from third week of September...I suspect covid because a relative who works for NHS was warned it was about and eventually tested positive after a few negs. This swine flu thing that has 'just' been discovered because a person has been tested, and now they're going on the track and trace bandwagon, hmm. Shutting the sty door after the pig has left it potentially...something has been mn wide but untested for months seemingly

1stTimeMama · 30/11/2023 16:06

Four of my children and myself have it. They're mostly through the worst of it I think, it's just the cough that's persevering. My 3yr old isn't enjoying it, and my 9yr old is presenting with an ear infection today. I however, feel and sound like my dead Nan who smoked from the age of 13 in to her late 70's. I'm only on day 4, temp, aches, headache, sinus pressure, eye pressure, utter misery. Last night my top half was cold, my bottom half hot...whats that about?!
I very rarely get ill, neither do the children, but this has wiped us out.

tealweasel · 30/11/2023 16:09

I honestly can't tell at this point if I've had the same bug for 8 weeks or if it's a series of viruses and infections which have run one after the other. I've had three rounds of antibiotics (who knows if they're even doing anything) and an overnight stay on the respiratory ward at the hospital after the pneumonia I developed caused my asthma to flare up massively. I'm now having to 'sleep' (usually in 60 - 90 minute blocks) propped up on a giant stack of pillows because otherwise all the gunk from my sinuses slides down into my lungs and I wake up coughing and choking. I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever feel well again (only half-kidding!)

happyasaseagullstealingchips · 30/11/2023 16:25

DS and I both have it too it's completely taken the legs from both us. Both testing negative for COVID . He's currently on the sofa with a blanket and the dog he's been like that a week.

AndIStayedInstead · 30/11/2023 16:42

Yep. Mine was covid.

Otherwise see what’s going on in China, France, the Netherland etc….
Covid has And is destroying our immune system. So we can’t fight normal viruses anymore.

CapeeshKitty · 30/11/2023 16:46

Me! I'm on 11 days. Went to the GP after 10 days as I thought Id be getting better by then but she said its viral and rife at the moment. This virus is lasting 2-5 weeks!

Fever, sore throat, sore chest, ear pain, burst ear drums, cough, sinus pain, sinus causing migraines

Covid negative (unless tests aren't detecting this strain?)

It's wank.

Evenstar · 30/11/2023 16:51

Ten days so far, DH caught it from me and we are both so poorly. He tested for COVID and it was negative. I am asthmatic and haven’t felt so ill since the year the flu jab had the wrong strains in it and I had full blown flu.

I feel reassured by others being so ill and not shaking it off as I was wondering if this is what colds are like when you get near 60. My late father was obsessive about avoiding colds and I don’t want to live like that but can understand why if you feel like this with one.

What's happening in France and the Netherlands?

AndIStayedInstead · 30/11/2023 17:07

Huge explosion of children in A&E with chest infection type of issue

OtherS · 30/11/2023 17:15

Is it the one that pretends to go away and then comes back even worse? Mostly sinuses, cough and runny nose for me but I've never had a nose so runny - I don't know how I produced so much! Thankfully that's calmed down but still coughing up green bloody phlegm - checked it wasn't a chest infection and told just sinuses thankfully, but I've spent an absolute fortune on every pill and nose spray available - not to mention boxes and boxes of tissues. Also checked for covid and clear. Think I'm at the end now but it's been over a month.

xogossipgirlxo · 30/11/2023 17:17

yes, me and my husband are also having it. Thank god our baby only had stuffed nose and slightly raised temperature. I’m feeling rubbish, currently on day 7 and cold lasts 3 days for me usually

nether · 30/11/2023 17:19

It's very likely covid. The tests don't seem to be as reliable with the current variants.

Best thing you can do is rest, rest and then rest some more.

And whether it's covid or not, try not to spread it around - it's making a lot of people really unwell. So don't go anywhere unless it's really necessary, wear a mask id you have to be indoors with other people and improve ventilation if you can

Nottodaty · 30/11/2023 17:20

Day 14 here - finally easing! Husband has had it for 3 weeks! Covid tests all negative.
It wasn’t as bad as flu last year I had - it is just a cold - but an awful one! Headache, earache, sore throat, temp, cough and bunged up! It’s just mad how long I’ve had it for!

My two children so far haven’t come down with it.

Thelazygardener · 30/11/2023 17:24

Week 4 of it currently….before this I’ve never had a cold longer than 48 hours! It’s awful!

Justonedayatatime11 · 30/11/2023 17:35

It's awful. DH went down with it this week, he's kindly shared it with me and I've only just got over covid which I got in September, now DD is complaining of feeling shivery and sore throat. Illness seems relentless this year, don't know what to do besides the normal eat well, stay hydrated, take your vitamins

Duckingella · 30/11/2023 17:49

GladioliandSweetPeas · 30/11/2023 02:35

As someone who has had repeated bouts of walking pneumonia and this god awful virus cold type thing that's going around I can tell you it's (the cold) really that horrible.

HerbalRefreshmentt · 30/11/2023 17:49

I had a virus very, very similar to this (but worse) about 11 years ago, same symptoms for three weeks and so bad I would sit on the couch and drool because it was too painful to close my mouth or swallow. It took 2-3 weeks to pass and is easily the sickest I've ever been (even more so than Covid!).

This feels like its little brother - this awful throat pain started Sunday, stuffed sinuses for a few days, every lymph node on the sides of my neck swollen, mild fever, cold night sweats, enormous globs coming out of my sinuses, hacking cough, loss of appetite. Today I was feeling better but the ear pain started about 2pm. I have oramorph in the house and have been taking small amounts once or twice a day to help with the throat because painkillers all give up about 4 hours after I take them. I guess I can look forward to runny nose shortly? Havent had that yet.

Covid test Tuesday was negative and if I hadn't had that prior experience I would just assume I have Covid. I have one more (new) test to try tomorrow on day 5, but I think wearing a mask in public spaces will have to be a must this winter. I had some minor sniffles and runny nose back in October that never really cleared either.

Hubs of course only had two or three days of a mild cough and a little fatigue - nothing one or two lemsip capsules couldn't sort out.
