That we've spent £140m on so far @DuncinToffee!

Beth Rigby (Sky) seems to think the second reading of the bill is on Tuesday, so likely the vote will be then, I think...

TokyoSushi · 07/12/2023 11:43

@DuncinToffee Quite.

Cornettoninja · 07/12/2023 11:43

So the argument now is that Rwanda is safe, because we've said it's safe

it’s their whole schtick. British people’s top priority is stopping the boats, because they said it is, the British people are feeling better off because they’ve said they do, they’ve stabilised the economy because they say they have, they will not let the war on motorists win because they’ve said there’s a war, we don’t want migrants filling skills shortages because they say we don’t.

And it works. There are people who will happily suck up whatever they say and suddenly be incensed because they’ve been told to be. They’re not happy unless they’re angry at someone because they can’t cope with the fact their life looks like it does because of them and their choices (including political ones).

TokyoSushi · 07/12/2023 11:45

It doesn't work for me @Cornettoninja 😄😄
But I agree that it does certainly work for some, nuts!

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2023 11:52

I felt this press conference was a plea ' back me or sack me' but then I only heard a bit of it
He sounded rattled

BIossomtoes · 07/12/2023 11:54

There’d be something wrong with him if he wasn’t rattled. Starmer was on the money last week about his reverse Midas touch.

DuncinToffee · 07/12/2023 11:42

a minimum of £140m

We could have set each of those 200 for life with that budget and had plenty left over. Nice house, access to a job or education...

InMySpareTime · 07/12/2023 13:56

He made a lot of his "reducing boat crossings by a third for the first time ever" but gave away his dodgy maths by also saying boat crossings quadrupled before he took office. So he hasn't really got boat crossings down, only gone a little way to mitigate the previous rise.

Notonthestairs · 07/12/2023 14:02

Lizzie Dearden has just tweeted about the costs - £140 plus £2.1 million in legal costs, plus costs of building and staffing detention centres, costs of running detention centres, flight costs, presumably some security at detention centres and during travel (?) etc and then on top of that whatever we will pay to support asylum seekers to remain in Rwanda.

I consider the lost time spent by the Home Office focusing on this batshit plan as having a cost as well.

It's like the Conservatives obsessively focusing on No Deal Brexit as a worldwide pandemic looms.

Nick Robinson getting laid in to Suella Braverman just now.

Accusing her of dripping poison and her newspaper articles, questions and statements being all about her. Of attacking homeless people, the police and migrants.

I couldn't believe (well actually - it's her - so I could) that she claimed the issue was basically comprehension of government PMs.

Can't remember her exact phrasing as listened on my way to work but it was extremely patronising

WTF is this shit? He sounds like a crackpot dictator.

WTF is this shit? He sounds like a crackpot dictator.

Sunak thinks he should be allowed to break the law because he is Prime Minister?

Cornettoninja · 07/12/2023 17:17

Hmmm I don’t think they’ve done the work to really get people on board with this particular cabinet so blatantly rewriting laws to circumnavigate international treaties.

That said I don’t really mix with manic fascists so maybe there’s a huge number of frothers chomping at the bit.

Cornettoninja · 07/12/2023 17:19

And what’s this talking about ‘we’ like he speaks for every person in the country. Take it to a GE and then he can start talking on behalf of at least some people.

Starmar needs to start calling this lot out for the dangerous arseholes they are.

A very timely poem by Benjamin Zephaniah, in memoriam. ~AA

Very poignant. Rest in Peace Benjamin Zephaniah

Notonthestairs · 07/12/2023 17:44

What a talented clever thoughtful man. Precisely what we need. RIP.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/12/2023 17:48

RIP Benjamin Zephaniah.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/12/2023 17:55

At the risk of lowering the tone after that…

Not sure this has played out quite how Tory Twitter admin were hoping.

What the heck are they up to on twitter today?
Petulant children....unless they are trying to get Andrea Jenkyns middle finger buried before the election?

Funnily enough that picture of Jenkyns has featured quite heavily in the replies.

If, and it's a big IF.. the Rwanda Bonkers Plan comes off... who would fly them? The last airline has said they will not be doing it again.

Social media will implode if it's a well known one. And this is what happened last time...
Privilege Style, a Mallorca-based company, has said it will no longer operate flights to Rwanda following an email campaign organised by the Freedom from Torture charity.
