Thanks @dontcallmelen .

Having a quick peruse through some of stuff Sir Chris W has said at the Covid inquiry today it's interesting that he seems fairly pro Cummings(?) Especially when juxtaposed with Cummings' Sunak comment from Valance yesterday.

Nobody seriously believes it is about getting the disabled into jobs. It is about cutting benefits. I am surprised they haven’t suggested sending them to Rwanda, COL must be so much cheaper over there.

I responded to their "consultation" on disability and work, but strangely enough they haven't taken on board any of my suggestions. Things like taking away the 5 week waiting period and minimum income for self employment, so that disabled people with fluctuating conditions can take on small bits of work when they feel well and still be able to pay bills when they don't feel well. A fund for employers that actually covers the costs of adaptations for different disabilities. Support for part time flexible working so people can flex work around appointments/flare-ups/caring responsibilities while getting the work done (even if it's outside "normal" office hours). Making it really easy to pick up a previous eligibility for help when you lose yet another job because of a health deterioration, so people don't have to make themselves even more ill trying to navigate the system at the point their money runs out. Processing claims quickly and sanctioning assessors when they make decisions that are wrong.

With more carrot and less stick, more people would feel confident to take on some work. As the system currently stands, claimants who get a few weeks of work risk homelessness and bankruptcy before their legitimate claim is processed.
No wonder people daren't risk working.

This sounds really sensible and practical. I guess too sensible and practical and not enough penalties to get the r/w media on board.

Cheers for the new thread Duncin Brew and the title itsgettingweird!

Don't give them ideas!

Thread from Scope really worth reading full -

x.com/scope/status/1726984434992468320?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

"These comments come on the eve of the #AutumnStatement, where the Chancellor is expected to announce a ‘benefits crackdown’.

But we’ve had decades of tightening sanctions, and it has never worked.

The government’s own research shows that sanctions are counterproductive.

"Threatening disabled people with more sanctions will not lead to more disabled people getting into and staying in work.

Forcing disabled people into unsuitable jobs and cutting financial support in a cost-of-living crisis will be disastrous.

The government should focus on upgrading its own back-to-work support, creating a system that works for disabled people not than against them.

It should focus too on improving employer attitudes, and ensuring disabled people have the opportunities and support to work flexibly."

It will fall on deaf ears of course.

Hello! Just checking in. Great title.

If I don't tell you about a plan, is it ok for me to say that you raised no objections to the plan?

Sounds like something out of Yes Minister

I'm a physically disabled Carer for my 2 disabled young people (16 & 18). I shan't watch the news tomorrow, I'm barely coping as it is. This Govt is evil.

DuncinToffee · 21/11/2023 21:15

I read earlier today that disability charities could be taking the government to court over their plans but I can't find it now. It mentioned the UN as well iirc

Please try not to worry too much. I think they said they would roll out this evilness to new claimants only from 2026. They will be long out of power by then. But still not a bad idea to avoid the news as well as any threads that might pop up on MN about it. Flowers

The UN has already issued a few warnings about the U.K. recently I think.

Non political dh said tonight to expect an election soon. They have started cutting taxes as they think it will gain votes.

If he has picked up on this, and is vocalising his disbelief that the country is sufficiently funded, then it's another nail in the coffin and I'd expect the polls to drop a few more points.

He doesn't usually pay much attention.

Tory party have been community noted again for this claim that Rishi halved inflation.

It's basically lying.

And the other thing is the fact that falling inflation does not mean lower prices.

I wonder what the effect of increased inflation had on Government budgets as well as tax take from the increased cost of items and increased pay rises?

Pension fund reforms mentioned by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Anyone know what the implications are?

mibbelucieachwell · 22/11/2023 13:04

Did he mean that a higher fee will be able to be levied by councils in return for a fast track decision?

Haven't seen the budget yet but the OBR prediction on growth doesn't look good

He's bragging about reducing the number of people signed off on sick benefits now. But he isn't saying how he's going to reduce the amount of sickness. What a bastard.

mibbelucieachwell · 22/11/2023 13:25

No, the economists on Newsnight last night were despairing at this government. Reminding us that the deficit to gdp ratio is best tackled by increasing GDP rather than cutting services and benefits to reduce the deficit.

Commenting that we can afford the Labour party's proposal to spend £28,000,000 on green technologies very comfortably.

mibbelucieachwell · 22/11/2023 13:28

Reducing NI from January 6th, instead of April. Spring election? Wrong but hopeful
