EXCLUSIVE

Major package of policies to reduce net migration being unveiled today

- Big rise in minimum salary threshold for skilled worker visas

- Scaling back of health+social care visas

- Overhaul of shortage occupation list

sounds great for the economy and health care Hmm

Ah a classic Sunak flip flop.

This gives you an idea of the scale/ pace of increase of skilled foreign workers into our health and care systems since the pandemic.

Turn off the tap, before UK staff are trained up, and when there are still 100k vacancies in care sector, and you create a staffing cliff edge.

Edited

Its the will of the people.

countrygirl99 · 04/12/2023 14:51

Thank god we are down to one elderly parent needing care. It's tough enough as it is.

AdamRyan · 04/12/2023 14:53

I don't understand what the minimum salary is about. Its the other end of the scale where there are staff shortages. We are just going to be going back to not enough lorry drivers/care workers/nurses etc

Ffs. It's only been 7 years since brexit. Just another 43 to go before we get sorted. Smell that sweet sovereignty

pointythings · 04/12/2023 14:56

It's all about getting those Russian oligarchs in because the UK needs billionaires, not workers.

Grown more than other countries in what?

food banks and antidepressant prescriptions.

DH is a scientist. He's shouting at the telly right now. Post docs coming from abroad to work on research here are paid less than the new limit so that's the end of that.

Johnson is up on Wednesday and Thursday.

Have we got a date for Sunak?

Next week sometime I think. Not sure which day though.

Do we need to invade the Netherlands to secure the supply?

This new immigration policy is the Tories in full panic mode, pure shambles

Probably should do just to be on the safe side.

Banning foreign NHS staff from bringing their family over is definitely going to help things.

They’ve completely lost it.

Would it be cheaper to send migrants there than to Rwanda?
Win win?

Which is why the very same people who are introducing these changes introduced the visa schemes that let the migrants in that have now decided they don't like.
I wonder if they ever wake up confused as to which policy they are meant to be arguing for today?

Alan Manning who used to head up the Migration Advisory Committee was on PM today tearing large holes in the policy. Very impressive.

It would enrage Geert Wilders, which is a desirable thing to do.

Yep.

  1. There is a reason they are doing this AFTER the autumn statement. The OBR's economic growth and borrowing projections were based on current migration trends. Were they to update them, based on these new policies, I suspect Hunt's 'fiscal headroom' would disappear.

  1. No sign of any detail as to the likely impact on social care. If they had positive assessments they'd be brandishing them. People do notice when Gran/Dad/Aunt is stuck in hospital for months at a time and correspondingly waiting times for ambulances/A&E increase etc.

It's not just foreigners bringing their family over, British citizens better not fall in love with foreigners too.

Poor Brits definitely. If you earn over £38k you’ll be ok.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/12/2023 21:24

I work in an industry that supports care homes.

They will be fucked.

messybutfun · 04/12/2023 21:26

They’re really trying to get the Brits to run away which I guess is one way to reduce net migration.

Funny you should say that, my friends and I were discussing retirement/care home ‘resorts’ in Thailand… they look bloody fabulous. Maybe we need to export our elderly there instead of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda. I haven’t costed it but neither do they so….

Genius. They could put them on Ryanair flights and save loads.
