I've just seen that the covid inquiry will be asking Johnson about his attempt to send the military into the Netherlands to seize control of vaccines when the EU blocked them. Apparently he was only detered from invading a NATO country when it was pointed out that the vaccines it would gain would be small fry compared to supplies coming from elsewhere in the EU which would then be lost.

You what??? I didn't hear about that. Seriously? That man lived in a fantasy where he was the new Churchill and our country was at war with everyone else. What an absolute idiot.

BIossomtoes · 04/12/2023 08:05

Nothing I hear about that creature surprises me any more. He’s capable of anything.

I thought I saw a Times article about this first thing this morning and now it seems to have disappeared.

Notonthestairs · 04/12/2023 08:17

There is quite a concerted effort in r/w media to discredit the Covid Inquiry at the moment. Interesting that it seems to be peaking just before Johnson gives evidence.
They really don't like investigations do they.

Zonder · 04/12/2023 08:34

Well you don't want to go holding people to account now, do you? Expecting them to behave like the general public.

DuncinToffee · 04/12/2023 08:44

Operation 'save big dog' is back then?

What are you not happy about @Piggywaspushed ? I felt like KS was making a deliberate comment against the current government while reminding tory voters that once they had someone who put the country first too. I think it was a clever move if it wasn't for the deliberate spin the MSM and Twitter verse have taken against him.

I'm just generally not convinced by the reframing of her as 'putting the country first' or about the entrepreneurialism. I think some rose tinted spectacles have been donned. I agree this is Labour expediency but Streeting and Starmer are not why I vote Labour (and indeed many people). Trouble ahead if Labour wins Scotland, potentially.

I do, however, think Starmer is a decent unflappable manager of trouble.

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2023 08:55

I imagine it's not in the remit of the inquiry but it also frustrates me that they can bang on about these vaccines. Someone needs to ask them why these groundbreaking vaccines, which saved so many lives and prevented serious illness are not being made available to any more that a small defined group in society now if we are so proud.

In fact, they have literally had to bin all the vaccines earmarked for the 50- 65 group.

I think that ship’s reached the Bay of Biscay.

The fact that The Telegraph is carrying articles by Keir Starmer and again this morning by Wes Streeting is very telling, it’s a clear acknowledgment that Labour is now a force to be reckoned with. It’s more important for them to address the increasing number of wavering Tories than appease the far left.

Together with the meetings Starmer has been having with a variety world leaders recently it is I think a clear demonstration that he will be the next Prime Minister.

At what point should a Prime Minister be removed on the grounds they are clearly insane?

Took dd for her latest covid vacinne in November. The nearest available place was 35miles away, by car, and almost inaccesible by public transport (I think it would have taken 3 hours each way).

They weren't allowed to give me a booster, even though they had more staff and vacinnes than they knew what to do with. Maddness.

And all the captains of industry at home. He’s clearly the PM in waiting.

Maybe he is the PM and that is why Sunak looks like a puppet?

Any news from the COVID inquiry and Johnson's blustering today?

tobee · 04/12/2023 13:58

Just had a bit on bbc news from an interview with j hunt and him talking about since 2010 with the world recession and how we’ve grown more than other countries. And when Sunak was chancellor. Blah blah. And him taking over as chancellor at a very difficult time and what he had to do. No mention of the insane fuck up by Truss and Kwarteng.

Cornettoninja · 04/12/2023 13:58

Not that I’ve heard @Zonder. I have been keeping an ear out.

Have we got a date for Sunak?

Grown more than other countries in what? Wonder what metric he is using.

Oh thanks - got my days muddled and thought it was today.

This gives you an idea of the scale/ pace of increase of skilled foreign workers into our health and care systems since the pandemic.

Turn off the tap, before UK staff are trained up, and when there are still 100k vacancies in care sector, and you create a staffing cliff edge.
