Rishis got a private jet seemingly on permanent standby. Maybe he could ditch a few grannies abroad for the health of the nation. He's spending a fortune on planes, may as well put them to full use. Dregs of the dregs, dreadful policy.

It's not just foreigners bringing their family over, British citizens better not fall in love with foreigners too.

Surely they wouldn't do that?

DuncinToffee · 04/12/2023 23:29

They would

I suspect @benwansell is right and this bit of the rushed immigration package won't survive. Pointlessly cruel in a way that's obvious even to Telegraph columnists.

BREAKING: Rishi Sunak suffers his FIRST Commons defeat as PM over the infected blood scandal

246 to 242 in favour of a new body to help compensate - government majority wiped out

Win for Labour, forcing him into a £20 billion spending commitment this year

That's very good news Duncin. Back in the 80s I met, in passing, a woman whose son had haemophilia. He'd recently been treated with Factor8, the blood product that was later found to be contaminated with HIV. They were so thrilled with it as he was predicted a near normal life as a result. I've often thought of them over the years and hope he survived. To attempt to weasel out of adequately compensating those affected is shocking, even for this lot.

BIossomtoes · 05/12/2023 08:50

Hopefully now it’s started Tory backbench rebels will get a taste for showing Sunak who’s boss.

The Covid inquiry stuff is making me wonder about the shielding.

Some asthmatics may remember that right back at the start there was a mixup over the shielding. In the run up to the shielding letters going out, asthma U.K. released the criteria that the DHSC had told them would be used to assess which asthmatics needed to shield. This turned out to not be the criteria which was actually used when the letters went out a few days later. Now wondering whether there was some government intervention because too many people were on the shielding list.

I mean it’s quite clear they were happy for people to die as collateral damage. And very much agree with whoever was talking about lack of access to vaccines for those who want them.

NEW: Fresh junior doctors strike in England. Dates as follows

7am 20th December to 7am 23rd December 2023

7am on 3rd January to 7am on 9th January 2024.

Hyper busy times for hospitals, especially early January. Going to dominate news agenda early in new year...

His follow up tweet about it being weird the government won’t do anything about it is spot on. It’ll look good for them and it’ll be labour paying for it.

jgw1 · 05/12/2023 20:00

Excellent news, a government minister has appeared to promise pay rises for workers to fill the gaps left by migrants.
Presumably nurses can expect pay rises any day now then, and similarly central government will increase funding for councils to ensure pay rises in social care.

Robert Jenrick

Robert Jenrick insists UK workers will fill labour gaps after migration crackdown

The immigration minister says he is prepared to "take further steps" if net migration does not come down.

They really don't have a plan for social care do they? Why reduce migration without putting anything in place to counteract negative impact of their policy.

165,000 vacancies in social care.
100,000 plus in the NHS.
Hospitals unable to discharge.
Ambulances will be lining up outside A&E.
Failed to reach agreement with junior docs.

Pretty much throwing vulnerable people to the wolves.

Notonthestairs · 05/12/2023 20:13

But don't worry the mega brains that brought us Brexit are applying their considerable powers to reviewing the Rwanda treaty (yes of course they are more qualified than our Supreme Court).

"ERG head Mark Francois confirms to @skynews @joncraig that as soon as emergency legislation is published, it will be referred to the "Star Chamber" of lawyers and MPs to assess it.

In a joint meeting with the New Conservatives"

We are safe in the hands of the likes of Kruger and Mogg. It's not like Etonians have ever lied to us before.

No, no, Jenrick has said that employers will have to pay workers more, and so more British people will want to do those jobs. Quite a good solution really, I hope the Chancellor and PM are in agreement.

Boris Johnson has been unable to supply Covid inquiry with any of his Whatsapp messages for almost entire of first lockdown

Experts have been unable to retrieve any of his messages from January 31, 2020 to June 7, 2020

Source close to Johnson says he didn’t delete them from his old phone but there was an undetermined technical issue

Do other people have Whatsapp messages from Johnson?
So they might not have got them from his phone but I guess there are people who have messages from him on their phones?

Zonder · 05/12/2023 21:57

That's what I was wondering. Surely they can check the phones of the people who got messages from him.

You should perhaps write to Jenrick asking him when you can expect it.

Notonthestairs · 05/12/2023 23:00

So no WhatsApps from Sunak and limited WhatsApp from Johnson.

Gosh, it almost like they have some to hide.
Or are incredibly inept.
Or both.

newnamethanks · 06/12/2023 06:40

Of course there's a plan for social care. Those people who are unwell,or disabled and living the life of Riley on benefits will be forced into employment to care for those who need it. That will cut unemployment, cut the benefits bill and oh, hang on, there's a hole in my bucket . . .

newnamethanks · 06/12/2023 06:41

Ah, the Vardy Defence. What else would we expect.

One of them was on the news last night saying the social care vacancies had now reduced to 151,000. So out of the 750,000 net migration, only 14,000 positions were filled in social care? How come this huge net migration is not resolving the issue of job vacancies?

I expect it must have been a substantially higher number which was cancelled out by those given visas previously deciding to return.

Why are they getting it so wrong? Surely someone can analyse how the issues can be addressed. I imagine someone has already done it and the answer is we must pay much better wages.

countrygirl99 · 06/12/2023 09:58

@messybutfun but that would involve difficult things like analysing and planning and putting in place constructive strategies, not just reactively putting out sound bites that you think will sound popular.
You have to remember they need time for all those 2nd/3rd/4th income streams.
