Bit shocked to see that Alistair Darling has died at 70.

Bit shocked to see that Alistair Darling has died at 70.

I always thought he seemed like a decent man. What a loss for his family.

Cornettoninja · 30/11/2023 13:06

I had no idea he was ill, no reason I would I suppose.

He was a a figure who made his mark. I hope his family are well supported.

mibbelucieachwell · 30/11/2023 13:24

I'm very sorry to hear that Alastair Darling has died.

He was a politician who I liked and respected hugely.

BIossomtoes · 30/11/2023 13:25

Same. He had real integrity. He never got the credit he deserved for steering us through the financial crisis.

newnamethanks · 30/11/2023 13:26

Sad news. Another good one gone.

tobee · 30/11/2023 13:28

Re Alistair Darling; Someone I know knew his wife through a work thing and knew him a bit as well and says they are/were both absolutely lovely.

This bit from the Covid inquiry today:-

"Mr Johnson says the health secretary is "doing great", asking if there is anything he can do to help.
"Kind of you to say. It's not easy. You are doing great too. Follow the science!" Mr Hancock replies. "

🤨🫤

Cornettoninja · 30/11/2023 13:54

Hancock is just bonkers. It’s like his past reality is in flux depending on what he needs to be perceived as and no one else can see it.

I liked the bit when they basically said ‘you know what you’re saying now doesn’t reflect what you wrote in your own book?’

After the Johnson-Brexit Clown Show I thought I was past being embarassed by our Prime Minister. At least 30pLee and Gullis restrict their oafishness to home ground more or less. Suella and Patel are nasty but useless. But. Two-fingering a European PM is beyond; how contemptuous is that? At come point this country will have to go cap in hand to the EU just to keep everything ticking over. We're going to be very welcome.

On Politics Live the other day the tory mouthpiece was trying to spin it as a snub against the UK. He kept insisting people were pissed about the Greek PM refusing to meet Dowden. What an insult to the UK that was ...

Imagine having to work for them and it's your turn to go out to defend the latest piece of buffoonery. I don't know how they keep a straight face.

I wouldn’t want to smear anyone’s good name but it wasn’t that long ago they sampled rather a lot of Colombian marching powder in the HoC

newnamethanks · 30/11/2023 15:43

That's true. I wish it contained a Pinnocchio effect, making noses grow longer rather than just rotting septums. Give us our money's worth for the entertainment factor.

Bozo is 59. I wonder if he'll be quite so insouciant in 10 years time?

His own book didn’t reflect reality all that well.

Zonder · 30/11/2023 17:52

Ah Hancock. Singlehandedly trying to "wake up Whitehall" to the terrors of COVID.

Funny how many of them were the lone voice speaking out in the madness of everyone else getting it so wrong.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/11/2023 17:56

They must have all been very confused. They were all speaking out about how it was wrong and yet everyone thought everyone else agreed with the plan.

newnamethanks · 30/11/2023 18:07

Well, to be frank they were all pissed, shopping trolleys, suitcases full of booze etc. I've not been paying as much attention as deserved but I gather that Bozo took office, stepped through the front door, then threw the keys at Cummings and told him to get on with doing the job of PM as he had a book to write and a wedding to pay for. I may have misunderstood some of this.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/11/2023 18:37

Cummings was busy wandering around trying to figure out who the idiot who was responsible for putting Boris in charge of the country was.

newnamethanks · 30/11/2023 19:11

😁fair point

Edited

I have been assured many times that the Prime Minister is only in charge of the No 10 indoor plants, I think you perhaps have misunderstood the role of Prime Monster.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/11/2023 19:34

Sorry, you are right I have. Pot plants and parties.
