I ennjoyed Starmer searching for a word to describe what Sunak turns everything to and wondering if the Home Secretary knew the right word.

Classic. And they reckon Starmer’s boring.

itsgettingweird · 29/11/2023 16:35

Yeah and if Starmers anything it's not boring. He's actually just serious and I have no issue with that after the string of clowns in charge

messybutfun · 29/11/2023 16:49

He’s finally found someone to write jokes for him. That’s a start.

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 17:11

The jokes write themselves really, he delivers them well.

That Starmer is quite serious, makes the delivery of them so much better.

Rishi. Rishi is writing them 🤷‍♀️

L1ttledrummergirl · 29/11/2023 17:46

To be fair, it must be hard to come up with jokes as big as the one Starmer is questioning.

Another Home Office clusterfuck…

They’ve been withdrawing asylum claims without consent to clear the backlog. They’ve had to admit today that they don’t actually know where most of those people are after they kicked them out of Home Office accommodation.

Indeed. The hapless Sir Humphrey was very clear he had no idea where the 17,000 people who they had decided weren't really wanting to make asylum claims after all had gone the Select Committee this morning.
Interesting to note that is likely to be a larger people than will have their asylum claims turned down this year.

"The @BBC has announced huge cuts to @BBCNewsnight as part of just released savings & digital reinvestment plans. The show will be shortened to 30 mins and become an “interview, debate and discussion show”. Reporter and other roles are being axed."

"Discussion" show - more opportunities for think tanks to get their people on.
Less facts. More opinions.

Wonder if this came up when Tim Davie (ex deputy chairman of Hammersmith Conservative Association) spoke to the 1922 Committee behind closed doors last month.

Agree 100%

He's actually quite dry and that's my type of humour

Missing children from hotels

https://x.com/Haggis_UK/status/1729920148402745795?s=20

Alison Thewliss(SNP MP): How many young people are still missing from home office hotels?

Simon Ridley(2nd Perm Sec, Home Office): 154 still missing

AT: Have you found any of those?

SR A lot aren't identified

AT: How many have you found?

SR: I don't know

Does anyone in the Home Office know what’s going on with anything at all?

tobee · 30/11/2023 03:22

So Matt Hancock up at the Covid inquiry at 10a.m.....

Zonder · 30/11/2023 06:29

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 13:37

Haven't watched PMQs yet but sounds like it went well for Sunak

Starmer: "I met with the Greek PM, we talked about the economy, security, immigration. I also told him we won't be changing the law regarding the marbles. It's really not that difficult."

"He's the man with the reverse Midas touch, everything he touches turns to ... maybe the Home Secretary could help me out?"

Ooh very clever of Starmer!

I have to go out at 12, so I'm hoping he gets his arse handed to him on a plate, before then!

AutumnCrow · 30/11/2023 10:09

Hancock's affirming now. He is facing the Polite Assassin, Hugo Keith KC the lead counsel to the inquiry.

Rightly or wrongly, it's not really supposed to be about 'handing arses' at this stage. It's an inquiry to find out what could have been done better, and what and how the UK can do better next time there's a pandemic. We're still only in Module 2. The inquiry will be still be taking evidence in 2025, in future modules - around procurement, for example. Many politicians and senior civil servants will be returning repeating for different modules.

That's not to say that the KCs testing the evidence from written statements aren't being robust, and yes they are exposing contradictions and areas of dysfunction. (A lot of which we already knew and have been discussed at length on places like MN.)

The Judge (the Chair) in charge is Baroness Hallett who is an experienced Appeal Court Judge.

Notonthestairs · 30/11/2023 10:36

Johnson giving evidence will be a tricky one for the Conservatives to manage. They won't want him soaking up too much attention away from Sunak even if the attention is negative.

Given the presence of the Greek PM in London managed to unsettle Sunak and take attention away from him, I fear for Sunak that probably even my pet slug would manage to.

Roussette · 30/11/2023 11:08

I believe Johnson is 'on' next Wednesday.

As for this morning, I am now reminded why little Matty Hancock annoys me so much

newnamethanks · 30/11/2023 11:18

After the Johnson-Brexit Clown Show I thought I was past being embarassed by our Prime Minister. At least 30pLee and Gullis restrict their oafishness to home ground more or less. Suella and Patel are nasty but useless. But. Two-fingering a European PM is beyond; how contemptuous is that? At come point this country will have to go cap in hand to the EU just to keep everything ticking over. We're going to be very welcome.

Wednesday and Thursday I think. We get two days of lying from him. Might consider taking annual leave.

mibbelucieachwell · 30/11/2023 11:49

@newnamethanks

I heartily agree. It's embarrassing and annoying. Firstly, who sets condition on a PM's visit? And then goes off in a childish huff.

Cornettoninja · 30/11/2023 11:50

@newnamethanks thankfully KS has at least had a bash at actual diplomacy which possibly puts some distance between the public and the current government. if the country rejects that at the next GE then we will definitely look like we condone the behaviour of this cabinet.

I’d be all for every opposing party going over the heads of government and holding their own meetings for the sake of diplomacy as this current lot don’t seem to have a drop of talent in that area (or any other truth be told).
