How rude was Cliff Richard to Alison Hammond?! 😲

Hi,

Had TM on in the background earlier and I was absolutely shocked at how casually rude Cliff Richard was to Alison Hammond. Not directly to her, but MASSIVELY inconsiderate and offensive nevertheless.

He was talking about the reason he missed his chance to meet Elvis and he explained that Elvis was overweight at the time and he knew he'd put up a picture on his wall of him and Elvis, but didn't want to if he "overweight and didn't look good" 🤨🙄 He went on to say something else not looking good if you were carrying extra weight and you could see how upset Alison was. She came back with something and tried to be humorous about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't want to call him out on it there and then. And obviously it won't have just been Alison who would have been offended by his clumsy, tone deaf comments.

Did anyone see it? So bad 🫤

Cliff has always had a thing about his weight - I'm sure I've read more about his health regime and eating than any other male celebrity. It goes to his own insecurities. Obviously the Elvis story is part of his 'routine' and he probably just didn't think.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 20/11/2023 14:31

Someone I know had an odd and somewhat inappropriate request from him when they were 4.

Westfacing · 20/11/2023 14:34

I recently watched a documentary on youtube about the Mountbattens or Edwina Mountbatten; the man said, "Edwina Currie"!

😂😂

RiderOfTheBlue · 20/11/2023 14:35

I was once sat in a group of 5 people at work, 4 slim and me fat. One of the slim people announced she'd rather be dead than fat. So that was nice.

Luxurybeliefspreader · 20/11/2023 14:35

It is largely considered a bit of a tragedy Elvis in his later years when he was overweight because it was a result of serious prescription drug addiction and he was often completely out of it so to be fair to Cliff who is now an old man and as likely to make faux pars as the next grandad I'd say it was badly explained and assumed everyone knows the association between Elvis's weight and his career and personal low point.

He definitely should bow out with grace now for his own good though.

BeigeChair · 20/11/2023 14:36

Just watching it now, most surprised to see Sarah Ferguson sat on the bench! Don’t watch TM.

but can I ask WTF is up with his hair??

pickledandpuzzled · 20/11/2023 14:38

It sounds like his own orthorexia speaking. It’s a condition that flies under the radar. Cliff has a leanness that looks to my non professional eyes somewhat unhealthy. He reminds me of the people who eat the apple peel and bin the apple for maximum nutrition.

hattie43 · 20/11/2023 14:38

People do this all the time . People at work do , of all ages , it's tone deaf when a large person is in front of you .

DarkDarkNight · 20/11/2023 14:39

That’s so thoughtless and rude. Poor Alison, that’s very upsetting. I already had a low opinion of him but it’s got lower. No doubt he believes himself to be of moral superiority because he is slim.

God, I'd have had to have a word with that smug bitch. Absolutely awful.

Justleaveitblankthen · 20/11/2023 14:40

He repeats that story as often as Joan Collins repeats her one "conversation" with Marilyn Monroe - and that's really saying something 😂

BeigeChair · 20/11/2023 14:41

just finished the clip, just wow.

Hurroo · 20/11/2023 14:42

He tells that that story a lot - and the lasting impression you get is that Cliff thinks Elvis ought to have taken an impending photoshoot with THE Cliff Richards as motivation to pack in the peanut butter sarnies, just enough to get back into the leather strides. And yet he didn't.

Seriously, Cliff.

(apparently it was being referred to as 'that chubby Cliff Richards' on Coronation Street that sparked his own foreswearing of carbs. So tragic that poor porky old Elvis didn't have the diet inspiration of Ena Sharples to spur him on.)

DriftingDora · 20/11/2023 14:43

Thisweeksname · 20/11/2023 13:53

Yes it was awful! He was so cringy, I felt embarrassed for him tbh, he really sounded like a dick

At least Alison Hammond doesn't behave like a twerp and use cheap-looking hair dye. And perhaps she's not too bad a singer. He's his own greatest fan, I think. And how many times has he told that boring same old story?

sarahh96 · 20/11/2023 14:43

Oh dear. I'm afraid he's a washed up old has been that lives off the fact he once knew famous people, they only wheel him out at Xmas so he'll be put back in his box too.
Joan Collins is going the same way. They seem to have a "don't you know who I am" attitude

AnnaShan · 20/11/2023 14:44

Wow, he comes across as a total knob in that clip (couldn’t think of a more refined word!).

I was too embarrassed to say anything in response. She was an awful woman. One of those who takes delight in "saying it as it is".

I’m risking outing myself here but this same thing happened to me last week. I was at an evening class and the conversation was about health. The teacher kept saying that the worst fear she had about a recent health scare was that she might put on weight due to the drugs she would need to take. How that fear was worse than the illness itself. Everyone laughed and agreed. And there I sat. Big fat bastard. Everyone else slim. Fortunately for me my self esteem is on the floor already so no harm done.

I hear ya
I’ve had similar too. Very naturally athletic and slim friend talking in our group about how she found being pregnant really hard as she had this big belly and her body changed. It’s horrible when you’re sitting there feeling like you’re everyone’s worst nightmare personified.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 20/11/2023 14:47

That whole generation of "stars" at the BBC are questionable. Cliff Richard, Jimmy Saville (obvs), Rolf Harris, Cilla Black. This generation (Russell Brand, et al) will have their own scandals, just not known yet.

I think it's the flip side to the cliquey-ness of the BBC. Like many other British institutions (schools, universities, law firms, banks, brokerages, publishers....the monarchy) they have a culture of thinking they're the best, and untouchable. It's engrained.

lesdeluges · 20/11/2023 14:49

The only reason CR is on the telly is because he is 80 something and never seems to age.

I'd say he's had more surgical interventions than someone male or female half his age anyway!

funbags3 · 20/11/2023 14:51

He's always given me the ick, even in his heyday.

Lilibert456 · 20/11/2023 14:51

He reminds me of a leathery old tortoise.

No excuse but I do wonder if he has an eating disorder himself.

He's way too thin for a man in his 80s (even though he's not alone - Mick Jagger obvs)

alwaysbreaks · 20/11/2023 14:56

Doesn’t he only eat one meal a day to stay thin. He’s got an eating disorder as he’s always been fixated on being thin.

He’s still touring though, so he can’t be that washed up! I know someone has been to a concert in London recently. He has a big fan base apparently. (Not me though, I can’t stand him.)
