If Diana had lived...

(Inspired by The Crown 6)

What do you think her life would have been like? Would she have remarried someone extremely wealthy? Would she be seen as the English Rose she was made out to be despite being pretty much hated just before her death? Would Charles have married Camilla? Would Harry have married Meghan? Would she and William be close or would he be embarrassed by her public romances?

All speculation of course! :-)

Was she hated before her death? I had no idea! I was only a kid when she died so everything Diana went over my head. I'm not a royal fan but I love the crown. I've only watched the first episode of the latest season.

KenAdams · 19/11/2023 17:30

She would have remarried.

And Meghan would have had a smoother transition because Diana would have been the blueprint, although I don't think Harry would have married her anyway. I think he'd have married someone non British and wealthy though.

SecondUsername4me · 19/11/2023 17:30

Hmm...

I think C and C wouldn't have married until after the Queen passed. I honestly don't think the Queen would have permitted it.

I think the Media would have cum in their pants at having four women (Camilla, Diana, Kate and Meghan) to pit against one another.

I think she would have spoken out (on the women's side) against Prince Andrew

I think we would have (sadly) seen more of Kate & Williams children in the media as she would have had them out and about in public loads, and the Media wouldn't have the restrictions on them they do now after how she died.

I think she’d have eventually found the right therapist and, as she neared 50, married someone richer than Croesus and fucked off to live a life of seclusion in somewhere like South Africa. She’d have grown tired of the drama.

Edited to add: and there would have been a feeding frenzy every time she entered the public domain. She’d have hated and loved it in equal measure. Her ego would want it. Her mental health would not. The latter would win 90% of the time.

MrsJellybee · 19/11/2023 17:39

She’d have been a new Jackie O. I still think she would’ve died young in some other way. Either another similar accident or an enigmatic Marilyn-style overdose. The chaos and circus around her was unsustainable.

Zamzamzamdeedah · 19/11/2023 17:40

I think she would just become simply another famous person few years later with press moving on. People don't have too long attention spans and new "omg have you heard"s come on regularly. Occasional story about her doing something and that would be it

capabilityfrowns · 19/11/2023 17:41

I'd just had my second child when she died , I was already hormonal and it really upset me

I don't think she was hated . Well, not by anyone outside the royal family . She was breaking their rules, she was open, and they wanted all matters kept private.

I think the reason there was such an outpouring of public support was because by ordinary people she was liked .

I've watched the last series , found it interesting. I doubt she would have married dodi, I think he was fun and a distraction at the time .

I reckon she would have remarried at some point and left the uk . I think Charles would have still married camilla . It's very sad . She was so young .

Makemydaypunk · 19/11/2023 17:41

I think she would have ended up pretty much like Princess Margaret, living a life of luxury with a few toy boys, she would have been constantly on holiday but with some charity work thrown in. I think she would have struggled with ageing and would have had various interventions, I think she would have found it hard quite seeing her massive popularity decline over the years and struggle with the new wives taking the limelight. Social media would have been like catnip to her but would cause her a lot of distress, I don’t think she would have had a happy or particularly peaceful life.

Terfosaurus · 19/11/2023 17:44

I don't know because I was only 13 when she died, so don't really 'remember' much about her.

But my SM feed would hopefully have less twats (who are younger than me so were literally children when she died) posting about how "she'll always be the true queen" and "the only decent member of the RF" blah blah.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 19/11/2023 17:44

I think she was media-savvy enough to turn her entire relationship with the public round. If it hadn’t worked out with Dodi she would have found someone else to bankroll her. As someone with multiple severe mental health problems, I think she would actually have continued to leverage the media until she burned out. She’d now be an Instagram star or at least the subject of a lot of SM posts.

The press were ripping her to shreds right up till the day she died - her fling with Dodi was not popular because the press were even more racist then than they are today.

ManchesterLu · 19/11/2023 17:49

I think eventually she would have remarried. It wouldn't have been so much of an issue once the boys were grown and could have a relationship with her without their father/other royals having to be involved for picking them up, dropping them off etc.

C&C would most likely still have married, but maybe not as soon. Diana would have been a quiet grandma and enjoyed this - though I'm not sure Harry would ever have crossed paths with Meghan, as I feel like his mother's passing directed his future far more than it directed William's.

AdoraFruitcake · 19/11/2023 17:52

I have no idea, but I like to think she would be happily married to a filthy rich but private man, and spend lots of time hanging out with Doria, minding Archie & Lili in the sunshine Grin.

StuartSheehyisBack · 19/11/2023 17:53

I think she would have had another child, a daughter, possibly with Dodi or another very rich man.

W would have still married K, but H would have been more stable and married someone still different from the usual royal "squares", but not an American actress. Maybe someone up in royal friendship circles/ famous/ Beckham, Ramsey style as they seem to be who the royals suck up to.

She appeared to love the limelight, or at least would have missed it in later life so would still in very popular in the media

This, plus the MIL from hell.

Lovemychair · 19/11/2023 17:57

I reckon she'd have appeared on Strictly 😊

FloweryName · 19/11/2023 17:58

I think she would have had a string of rich boyfriends and ended up losing public sympathy while she embarrassed herself in the media. She would have continued to draw lots of attention and would have become more and more outspoken in her interviews.

PiddleOfPuppies · 19/11/2023 17:59

I think she would have struggled with the constant intrusion from social media, while trying to retain some status as the 'People's Princess'. She died before Ed married Sophie, and I think the media would have set them against each other. Saying that, Sarah Ferguson has managed to carve out a life separate from the RF so maybe Diana would've done the same with some decent counselling and PR advice.

Bendysnap · 19/11/2023 18:04

I think it would have meant William wouldn’t have gone to St Andrews (for privacy); might have gone to Durham, Cambridge or Exeter and ended up marrying someone else entirely.

Harry would have married Chelsea Davy.

Di would have settled down with Hasnat Kahn (apologies re spelling) or some other surgeon she met through charity work.

cheezncrackers · 19/11/2023 18:06

I think she'd have dumped Dodi once the summer was over - he wasn't her type at all. He was a drug-taking, philandering, waste of space from what I can tell - not classy enough for her by half.

As to what she'd have done next - she often said (according to friends) that she wanted to move abroad. I could see her buying a nice place in the south of France or maybe in New York and continuing to be the patron of charities. I suspect she wouldn't have married again, but she'd have had a special someone or a succession of wealthy partners perhaps a bit older than her - people who were discreet and successful.

As for Charles and Camilla - if Diana was still alive I'm not sure what they'd have done. I guess if she'd moved abroad and made a happy life for herself away from London then perhaps things would've worked out similarly to how they have done? I know the Queen wasn't in favour of them marrying, but Charles was determined, he was the PoW and future king and I think he'd have got his way eventually. As it was, he waited nearly 8 years after Diana's death to marry Camilla, but perhaps if Diana had been happily settled in her new life he'd have been able to marry sooner?

QueefofSheena · 19/11/2023 18:08

Dodi was just an amusement. Just as Will Carling was, and it broke up his marriage. If she had remarried it wouldn’t have been to Dodi. She’d have quickly found another ego boost. Remember Oliver Hoare, who she basically stalked?

The way Charles behaved towards her when they married was appalling, and she was so young and mentally fragile and it shaped how she behaved with men.

cheezncrackers · 19/11/2023 18:09

As for Harry - I think he'd have been a completely different person if his DM had lived. He'd have been less troubled, less angry, less miserable. So would he have fallen for someone like Meghan, who is so showy and fake? I don't think so. I feel she fulfils something in him, because he's still a little boy lost. And he's a little boy lost because he lost his mum at 12.

ColleenDonaghy · 19/11/2023 17:54

This, plus the MIL from hell.

Yes, this. But possibly more for Harry’s wife than for William’s- I think Will would have gravitated more towards the Windsor side as he matured, and Diana would be a bit of an embarrassment to him. But Harry would have stayed loyal to her. Maybe become the Estella to her Miss Havisham.

Agree with all of this and I too had had my second child earlier in August x

I agree to a point but I do think her parents hideous divorce shaped her mental frailty more.
