If Diana had lived...

(Inspired by The Crown 6)

What do you think her life would have been like? Would she have remarried someone extremely wealthy? Would she be seen as the English Rose she was made out to be despite being pretty much hated just before her death? Would Charles have married Camilla? Would Harry have married Meghan? Would she and William be close or would he be embarrassed by her public romances?

All speculation of course! :-)

She was just a massively stupid, moderately damaged royal sleb. If she was still alive she would have launched her own wellness brand and given birth to a three or more I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here Z-listers

CesareBorgia · 19/11/2023 19:01

Paul Burrell wrote that Diana was actively looking to buy a property in America at the time of her death; planning to take the Burrells over there with her.

ChannelNo19EDT · 19/11/2023 19:03

Agree that Harry would have been less angry, more grounded, and he'd have married somebody with a more internal locus of validation.

I think she would have remarried- eventually

Magazines would be discussing whether or not she had a face lift

i agree with PP - I think any GF of the boys would have had a hard time. Diana was not well adjusted and I don’t think would cope well with getting older ( 62 now) and having 2 young women on the scene
I don’t think she would be impressed with Meghan - Diana may have had her beef with the monarchy but it is also Williams future and she was loyal to the Queen. So we would have been spared the book Spare.
She would have supported charities, been interviewed by Piers Morgan, have a holiday home abroad and been absent for the coronation

Sadly - the question is - would the press have changed had she not died? They are not squeaky clean now but back then they did hunt and did publish photos - Diana’s death was a turning point in many ways.

The way Charles behaved towards her when they married was appalling, and she was so young and mentally fragile and it shaped how she behaved with men

I agree to a point but I do think her parents hideous divorce shaped her mental frailty more.

I agree, and was just about to post a similar comment.

DonnaDonna0 · 19/11/2023 19:09

I don’t think the public hated her, the press at the RF’s back office request were trying to reduce her popularity. Charles was heir to the throne they needed her to become less popular and out of the media.
If she lived she would always have been the mother of the second heir to the throne, she had a way with her that the public loved no denying that and I think would always create a media frenzy. I think Camila would not be in the position she’s in now. (Even the queen’s wish was Queen consort with Diana out the picture)

Christmasapple · 19/11/2023 19:09

I think in private she would have been a nightmare MIL. W has spoken of how his mother leaned on him as a children and I think that would have worsened when he became a man. She clearly loved her sons but I feel they were a bit of a crutch for her.

Maireas · 19/11/2023 19:10

Bugbabe1970 · 19/11/2023 18:51

Who hated her?
She would have married a billionaire and disappeared from public life

I doubt very much that she would have disappeared from public life. She loved it.

MissBattleaxe · 19/11/2023 19:17

The press loved to hate her but she was also their oxygen. I have an early edition of a newspaper printed the night she died and it obviously wasn't edited in time. The headline was "Diana Dead" and about halfway through some Fleet Street journo was slating her parenting skills in some kind of bitchy open letter disguised as an article, with a picture of her on a yacht.

Once she was dead, it was rare to see her slated anywhere.

MadeOfAllWork · 19/11/2023 19:17

She wasn’t hated but there were certainly a chunk of the population who disapproved of her.
I’d love to see some vox pops of thoughts about her once the pictures of her and Dodi on the yacht were published. I think a lot of people pretended they had always loved her once she died.

I think also some people, especially women, saw her doing what they couldn’t. Leaving a failing marriage and going off to have fun.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 19/11/2023 19:22

imo
Neither of the sons would have married their wives. William married someone who wouldn’t rock the boat and Harry the opposite.

Diana was a snob (told Charles the Spencer line was older than the Windsors) and the wives I think would have been UC rather than MC.

Diana loved the media attention. Wasn’t keen on the woman but she died young and was canonised. I’m a couple of years younger and remember her death and newspapers before and after really well. The difference was stark.

catmothertes1 · 19/11/2023 19:22

William might not have met Kate as his mother would have not wanted him to go to university too far from to where she lived. She would probably be quite possessive of adult sons.

Maireas · 19/11/2023 19:25

I agree about Diana's attitude - Paul Burrell loved her, but said that she was "an aristocrat to her fingertips".
She did not extend the hand of friendship to Sophie.

Not sure, but id be intrigued to read the intelligence services files, just as long as the intelligence is not redacted.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 19/11/2023 19:34

I think they’d all have been so different

The press was starting to turn on here. Too many holidays. Cavorting with men. Not acting her age. They’d built her up and the inevitable tear down was about to start.

They’d have done that on repeat.

The two princes would have had a totally different life so it’s impossible to guess if they’d have married the same women. Or even if Catherine and Meghan would have wanted to marry the totally different men they have been!

In many ways so much would have depended on the choice Rupert Murdoch and the other media big wigs would have made because they impact so much. Their choices would have impacted her charity appearances, which would have shaped how fulfilled she felt etc.

I don’t think Harry would ever have married Chelsy Davy, for similar reasons that Charles and Camilla never married younger - she did not want to be part of the royal circus

I went looking for something like this on the day she died, because I was confused by the dawning coverage after weeks of her being slagged off, and I found an article about how she should just shut her mouth.

was this the one you have or was it another one?

FancyFanny · 19/11/2023 19:49

She would have become old and wrinkly and the press would have constantly speculated about her plastic surgery, her diet, her fitness, her therapist, etc. She would have gone from disaster to disaster of a relationship. Wills hand Harry would have constantly been torn between her and the Royal family, and poor William would not have been able to become the man he is today with a stable family and good relationship with his father. Camilla would always have been the evil marriage wrecker and have suffered even more comparisons to Diana than she already has.

TheKnittedCharacter · 19/11/2023 19:53

She’d be 62. Not many wealthy people of this age are ‘old and wrinkly’ and I think she’d have certainly made to most of anti-ageing tweakments.

SecondUsername4me · 19/11/2023 17:30

Hmm...

I think C and C wouldn't have married until after the Queen passed. I honestly don't think the Queen would have permitted it.

I think the Media would have cum in their pants at having four women (Camilla, Diana, Kate and Meghan) to pit against one another.

I think she would have spoken out (on the women's side) against Prince Andrew

I think we would have (sadly) seen more of Kate & Williams children in the media as she would have had them out and about in public loads, and the Media wouldn't have the restrictions on them they do now after how she died.

Almost certainly there wouldn't have been a Meghan, and quite possibly a Kate either (unless Wiliam had still planned to go to St Andrews).

Diana living changes the course of history (best exhibited in Back to the Future), so everything becomes different. Even Andy, that issue might have been altered.

FancyFanny · 19/11/2023 19:59

Well, Sarah Ferguson certainly hasn't maintained her looks, and with Diana's erratic eating disorders and emotional difficulties she may well have aged badly!

Picoloangel · 19/11/2023 20:06

No idea why I think this but I always feel she would have hated Meghan.

Timeforallthecheese · 19/11/2023 20:11

I think she’d have remarried and moved to the states once W and H were out of school/university etc. She wasn’t hated. That was clear with the reaction from the public after she died.

Mumofteenandtween · 19/11/2023 20:11

Not sure about most of it but two things I am sure of:-

  1. She would have been a really lovely grandmother to whatever children William and Harry had.
  2. She’d have really enjoyed looking younger and better than Camilla at her sons’ weddings. Oh - and she would have worn tall shoes so that she was much taller than Charles.
Samcro · 19/11/2023 20:12

Picoloangel · 19/11/2023 20:06

No idea why I think this but I always feel she would have hated Meghan.

Weirdly I think it’s more likely it would be Kate. Kate I assume would have been the new younger version. I just can’t see Diana liking that.
I do think harry would still have not been happy. I don’t think Diana would have wanted him to be anything but Williams side kick.
hopefully he would have still married Meghan and left

WinnieTheW0rm · 19/11/2023 20:14

(unless William had still planned to go to St Andrews)

I think that's quite likely. He was clever enough for a good university, but there is no way he could have been glad-handed into Cambridge. I think a university in Scotland was always a very likely choice, and the smaller town might well be preferable for privacy/security reasons
