If Diana had lived...

(Inspired by The Crown 6)

What do you think her life would have been like? Would she have remarried someone extremely wealthy? Would she be seen as the English Rose she was made out to be despite being pretty much hated just before her death? Would Charles have married Camilla? Would Harry have married Meghan? Would she and William be close or would he be embarrassed by her public romances?

All speculation of course! :-)

I think Haz would still have married Meghan as she would be 'the mum he had never had', no contact with Diana obviously, he would blame Diana for everything

Samcro · 19/11/2023 18:18

I don’t remember her being hated.
I do dislike how people are posting that William would still have married Kate, but Harry wouldn’t have married Meghan.
it’s like people have to get a bash in.
i do wonder if Charles would have married camila

Newgreendress · 19/11/2023 18:18

And we would have another ten volumes of 'Waaagh' books

I think she would have remarried and just got on with enjoying her life, her children and grandchildren. She would have encouraged PW to marry someone with a bit more about her than Kate, but probably would not have been successful with his father happy for him to marry someone who would sacrifice their life happily for the prestige and the money. I think she would have loved Meghan for being a self made woman who has made her own way in the world, and the way she has made PH so happy.

TheKnittedCharacter · 19/11/2023 18:21

I think she would never have been happy in a relationship as she was too bonkers damaged.

Her celebrity would not have waned, she’d still be mega famous but there’d be less interest in other celebrities to the extent there has been since her death.

Diana got a lot of negative press that final summer, as pp have said. Her sons were at boarding school, yet for a lot of the summer she wasn't with them, but having the cruises with Dodi. That's how she was portrayed. An absent Mum with a playboy boyfriend.
It's difficult to work out what might have happened. She was clearly a very troubled individual, yet may have found a happy second marriage, and some peace.

TurquoiseMermaid · 19/11/2023 18:24

She wasn't hated exactly by the public, but the media demonised her and made Diana-bashing a national sport, the same way they later did with Meghan-bashing. Certain segments of the general public are very suggestible and believe anything the tabloids tell them, and obediently hate whatever they're told to hate.

But Diana had such charisma and inherent likeability that she was able to at least partially overcome the media smear campaigns.

I don't think either William or Harry would have married their wives. William would have been discreetly guided into a relationship with an upper class girl, and wouldn't crave the normality and cosiness the Middleton family gave him. Especially, he wouldn't be so dependent on Carole Middleton and her attempts to manipulate the course of the relationship, eg getting William over to their house for a party after he dumped Kate the first time. If William had still had a mother he wouldn't have developed such a strong bond with Carole, and without that strong bond, the breakup likely would have stuck. I think Diana also would have stopped the other royals from pressuring him to get married.

Harry sought out an American wife who had a strong personality and ambitions and a life of her own in the USA because he was looking for someone to be his escape route out of Britain due to his hatred of the British press for "killing" his mum. If Diana was still alive, that hatred would never have developed, and Diana also would have protected him from the tabloids and from the royal family and courtiers leaking horrible stories about him from the time he was a teenager to protect William. He would have married either a posh girl or a party girl and lived between Britain and maybe somewhere in Africa, being a party prince and quietly doing his own projects like Invictus and Sentebale but not all this wanting to be a global statesman nonsense.

RocketIceLollie · 19/11/2023 18:24

She wouldn't be held anywhere near the level of affection as she was offered after her death I don't think. Her tragic accident made her a martyr. No idea what she'd be doing. Probably some high profile charity work.

WinnieTheW0rm · 19/11/2023 18:25

She lost a lot of public sympathy when she was the OW who broke up the Carling marriage. I can't remember if the other stuff about her bombarding another married man had come out in her lifetime, but it would have come out at some point. I think Dodi was just a dalliance.

She had been unlucky in her choices of lover and longer-term relationships.

Even though the press was not universally positive about her, she still had massive coverage and I think it would have been difficult for someone to step in to that world. So unless she found someone wealthy enough to insulate them from all that (the Onassis scenario) I'm really not sure that she would have married again. Which is a shame, because my take on much of what she said/did was that she wanted to be loved

And I doubt Charles and Camilla could have married before she remarried.

William may well have ended up with Catherine, because I think he would have probably gone to the same university, and he has never seemed as troubled as his brother

Harry would probably have joined the Army and had a similar military career. But would the drinking, partying, drug taking etc still have happened in the same way? And if not, would his circle have been very different?

What happened with the surgeon (Hasnat Khan)?

When I first moved to London as a student, I had a friend who worked in Harrods and she showed me the memorial statues thingy - eek.

He is a mild mannered, unassuming private man and I don't think he could handle the scrutiny. Can't say I blame him.

I think she would have continued to be fodder for the press, maybe becoming a bit of an embarrassment but she would have eventually matured and figured out how to play the game better. She would have slowly faded from publicity for a while then reappeared later occasionally and with the genuine respect of the people. I think she would be known for charity work other than love affairs as she aged. She definitely would have done strictly!!!.

I think the rest of them would have been better people for her being alive. Harry would be a much happier man, who knows if he would have married Meghan but he would not have been so bitter and damaged. Charles and Camilla would still have married.

I'm suddenly quite sad about it. I was in the USA and watching TV and they interrupted the program to say she had died. It was so weird knowing before everyone else. I loved the crown but don't think I could watch a portrayal of her death. When I think of those boys being made walk in public and then sent out to sympathise with the public it makes me so angry.

LongDarkTeatime · 19/11/2023 18:42

I wonder if Harry is taking the path Diana may have. Going to USA to try and avoid press and try and help charities.

cyclamenqueen · 19/11/2023 18:43

She was massively insecure and would have become very possessive of W in particular so I think it would have made it very difficult to have a successful marriage to anyone.

Harry would not have gone to Eton ( they only let him in because if what happened to Diana ) and would probably have married Chelsy .

she would have turned into Princess Margaret without the fags and dubonnet

MadeOfAllWork · 19/11/2023 18:47

Everyone very quickly forgot that the press were telling us how dreadful she was only days before she died. I wouldn’t say that the public hated her but rather that they were disappointed by her perhaps. People saw her seeming to ignore her children and flounce about on a fancy yacht with a young man who was a Muslim, which was shocking to a lot of people.
When she died everyone just forgot that and carried on about how wonderful she was and how she was so badly treated by the royal family.

Had she lived I think she may well have had a number of romances before settling down with someone more stable.

cheezncrackers · 19/11/2023 18:09

As for Harry - I think he'd have been a completely different person if his DM had lived. He'd have been less troubled, less angry, less miserable. So would he have fallen for someone like Meghan, who is so showy and fake? I don't think so. I feel she fulfils something in him, because he's still a little boy lost. And he's a little boy lost because he lost his mum at 12.

Agree with this. Harry wouldn’t have married Meghan, he’d have been far better adjusted and wouldn’t have been desperate for the “escape” she offered.

SecondUsername4me · 19/11/2023 18:48

Imo her death humbled William and broke Harry. Had she not died, W would have become as arrogant and angry as his father and Harry would be the life, light and soul of any occasion. People would be doing the old "can't William step aside for Harry? No one wants William on the throne anyways" thing.

Differentstarts · 19/11/2023 18:48

I think she would be about to enter the jungle

‘Humbled William’ he was a child FGS.

dapsnotplimsolls · 19/11/2023 18:50

I think she'd have worked her way through a few husbands.

Bugbabe1970 · 19/11/2023 18:51

Who hated her?
She would have married a billionaire and disappeared from public life

Lavinia56 · 19/11/2023 18:54

I remember the day of her funeral, very clearly. It was heart-rending. She wasn't so much 'loved' by the public, but almost everyone was interested in her. Her image sold millions of magazines.
I think she would have found it very hard, as she got older, and then Kate and Meghan came in the scene. She would have been jealous, for sure.
Whether William and Harry would have made the choices they did, who knows?

Sowhatsnext123 · 19/11/2023 18:56

I reckon she'd have ended up with Elon Musk

Was she hated before her death? I had no idea! I was only a kid when she died so everything Diana went over my head. I'm not a royal fan but I love the crown. I've only watched the first episode of the latest season.

She wasn’t hated by the public at all, most people watched uncomfortably as a young naive woman married someone much older and much less attractive, who she’d only met a few times, and who then cheated on her. Most people felt sorry for Diana as it was obvious she could have had a much better life if she hadn’t met Charles.

I remember the time of her death well. People felt very angry on Diana’s behalf.

The media absolutely loved writing nasty articles about her, especially after she dated to take a non-Western lover. It was a form of slut-shaming basically, a bit like the crap Taylor Swift had to put up with but it was worse back then, the tabloids were hacking phones etc. The day she died there was a huge article in Hello with unflattering pictures taken by paparazzi of her on holiday in swimsuits and a cruel commentary on her body.

The general feeling was that between the hate she got from the media (because it sold newspapers and advertising space), and the cold distaste she got from the royal family, the establishment had effectively killed her.
