Are you really ok with having another Tory government? Because in all honesty that is what you'll get.

I think there are quite a few Mumsnet posters who are naturally Tory voters, so the 'at least they know what a woman is' line is a convenient way to justify how they intended vote in any case. It is nonsense, as the Tories have brought in all the policies the GC posters are up in arms about, but cognitive dissonance is not unusual in voting choices.

Labour brought in the Gender Recognition Act, not the Tories. The Tories have not brought in specific policies, though they have certainly failed to act when the inevitable consequences of the GRA played out. I have no issue with them lowering the cost of the GRC thought I’d rather such a thing didn’t exist. I won’t be voting Tory (and never have) but I can’t bring myself to vote for Labour either.

Lifesd · 18/11/2023 13:20

There is no one I could vote for so should a general election be called before I leave this country for good (unlikely) then I will be spoiling my ballot. My prediction for the election will be a historic low turnout as I am certainly not the only one who feels politically homeless. People are utterly deluded if they think Starmer is going to sweep into power and implement meaningful change - we are broke, our infrastructure is on its knees and labour wouldn’t be coming into power with a strong economy backing them up like they did in 97.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 18/11/2023 13:21

Lavinia56 · 18/11/2023 13:17

I will be voting Labour, and I would like to see Starmer have a go at being PM.
I wouldn't condemn him on one policy alone. I believe he said that 99% of women do not have a penis, which is factually correct.

‘Factually correct’? Are you serious?

That’s exactly where he’s going wrong, in a nutshell.

100% of women do not have a penis. The vast majority of trans women do have a penis. These are two separate cohorts. Pretending otherwise makes him look like a lying idiot who’s not fit to govern.

Alconleigh · 18/11/2023 12:48

I will probably vote for Labour, because I don't want more of this venal bunch of talentless, corrupt vandals. But I boggle at anyone who dismisses women's rights as "a ridiculous single issue". It's everything.

This all day long.

The current government are a nightmare. Labour aren’t a magic salve, they don’t have all the answers to my political questions. I have serious concerns about what happens on the GenderWoo front when Labour get in, so they need to get their shit together on the issues as they are serious and wide reaching. They have a lot of work to do.

DuesToTheDirt · 18/11/2023 13:36

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/11/2023 12:20

Given it was the Tories who brought the trans shitshow upon us, people who claim to be voting for them because they know what a woman is🙄 are either uninformed or being disingenuous.

Yes, agreed.

Alargeoneplease89 · 18/11/2023 13:38

It's not just those two issues that put people off Labour though is it? There ability to spend money like its going out of fashion is a big factor.

Its like a circle, everyone gets sick of Conservatives then they elect Labour who spends like crazy then everyone gets pissed off, when there is higher debt and then Tories come in and do austerity cuts.

I feel politically homeless and probably won't vote for the first time in my life because I really don't care - Is this the best we really have?

Also another problem in the back of my mind is I feel Stamer will be kicked out after the first year and another extreme left loon will be installed.

BethDuttonsTwin · 18/11/2023 13:39

Dontmesswiththeyakult · 18/11/2023 12:44

No, not really. But I wouldn't vote Labour if you paid me.

I strongly suspect we'll end up with a Labour government but I will not have any part in electing them.

This. And I have always voted Labour in the past. I will not contribute to the madness.

Lavinia56 · 18/11/2023 13:41

I believe there are some people who are born with no clearly defined gender (Lady Colin Campbell?).
So yes, what he said is correct. He isn't lying and that one statement doesn't make him unfit to be a PM.

Desecratedcoconut · 18/11/2023 13:46

Yes. Because, crucially, I don't think we'll see this big improvement in quality of life under a Labour government. I think economic restrictions will mean that things will be largely the same.

So I think the decimation of women's rights and anti-semitism will be an unwelcome side order to the current shit sandwich.

Worse, given the new government will be economically hamstrung, I expect they will go large on the cultural activism to prove some tangible evidence that they aren't like the other lot.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 18/11/2023 13:46

NOBODY has a clearly defined gender. Some people are born with ambiguous genitalia due to a medical condition but following tests it is easily determined whether they are male or female. If a person has a penis, even if it looks ambiguous, he is male.

boudiccathecat · 18/11/2023 13:46

If you are talking about dsd they are either male or female with a chromosome difference. No woman has ever had a penis.

suggestionsplease1 · 18/11/2023 13:48

The focus on the trans issue at the ballot box is ill-thought through in the larger picture of what is best for women.

Indeed, the 4 countries in the world that are doing the best for women in improving equality for women and closing the gender gap have all moved to more relaxed policies of gender self-ID.

This is from the global gender gap index, a report that is cited by governments, health organisations and women's groups internationally. They have remained in those top 4 positions in the last years and have not dropped down, despite their introduction of these policies

www.statista.com/statistics/244387/the-global-gender-gap-index/#:~:text=The%20global%20gender%20gap%20index%202023&text=The%20global%20gender%20gap%20index%20benchmarks%20national%20gender%20gaps%20on,with%20a%20score%20of%200.91.

www.weforum.org/reports/global-gender-gap-report-2023/

So it would seem that doing well for women is not incompatible with the approaches they have taken for gender self ID.

GrimDamnFanjo · 18/11/2023 13:50

I'm glad I won't have to make that decision as my vote doesn't have any impact.
I still wouldn't put it past Labour to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Lavinia56 · 18/11/2023 13:50

boudiccathecat · 18/11/2023 13:46

That's pretty much what Starmer said.

Desecratedcoconut · 18/11/2023 13:51

There isn't any good outcome when you erode women as a sex class. Whatever tokens they tell you might get for holding your nose, to be delivered some time on the never-never.

egowise · 18/11/2023 13:51

Westfacing · 18/11/2023 12:17

Well for the past year or so I've been saying I won't vote Labour as am particularly disappointed in Starmer - he really is useless.

But I suppose am going to have to - have no other choice really.

This is how I feel.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 18/11/2023 13:51

Lavinia56 · 18/11/2023 13:50

That's pretty much what Starmer said.

No. Because zero children born with a penis are female. Zero women have a penis. What he said was pandering to trans ideology whilst trying not to alienate women who don't agree that men can be women. It was just as incorrect as saying 'men can become women'. It's all the same rubbish.

AlisonDonut · 18/11/2023 13:52

OP what is it that Labour are actually offering? Does anyone know?

I mean, things that will actually be able to happen. Not just random words in a pamphlet.

minipie · 18/11/2023 13:52

Well I suppose there are a few transmen (ie women) who’ve had a fake penis built and sewn on, so maybe that makes the 99% statement correct ? Although more like 99.9% I imagine.

I won’t be voting based purely on this issue. I don’t think it’s necessary - I think - I hope - the tide is turning and popular opinion is now firmly on the side of GC. (And on the side of Gaza although suspect that will be all over 😔 by the time of any election)

LaviniasBigBloomers · 18/11/2023 13:53

It's a choice between a shite sandwich and shite on toast. The only way I can square my conscience is to vote for the best candidate and take their party out of it. That is not likely to be Tory (I'm in Scotland).

mrscatwoman · 18/11/2023 13:54

Completely agree. I'm sick of people sanctimoniously saying they are 'politically homeless.' So much navel gazing - no one cares. You aren't going to get a party with policies you agree with 100%. But we cannot survive another 5 years of this shit.

BubblingVelociraptor · 18/11/2023 13:55

The current government is a heartless, corrupt shitshow.

However, I can't currently bring myself to vote Labour. It is not just the rampant misogyny and anti-Semitism. It is what their attitude to women's rights represent. It shows me that they in are the thrall of special interest groups, that they don't have the courage to make difficult decisions, that they are not interested in the views of their voters, that they intolerant of differing views within their party and that they can't look at things objectively. That is not a party I want in power.

I have no one to vote for.

Hibernatalie · 18/11/2023 13:56

It's a 2 party system and always has been. Just because you don't like something, doesn't make it less true.

Desecratedcoconut · 18/11/2023 13:57

mrscatwoman · 18/11/2023 13:54

Which of Labour's policies do you think will improve life, how have they said they will be paid for and when do you expect them to materialise?

Lifesd · 18/11/2023 13:57

People so disenfranchised they can’t bring themselves to vote isn’t navel gazing it is a sad indictment of politics and politicians today. I agree we can’t have another 5 years of what we currently have but what are Labour going to do? And with what money?
