I hate my new car, I feel sick

It’s my fault, I was easily talked into it by the sales person.

It’s such a basic car and I’m embarrassed by it. It’s expensive and I want to cry

TBF a girl in my year at school got given a brand new Mercedes A Class when she passed her test. Were you at my school OP? 😂

(not me, I was driving my mum’s old Renault 5)

ValuableLimeLesson · 11/11/2023 15:08

@Robyn847 I love that car. I would call it The Pea.

fridaynight1 · 11/11/2023 15:15

Sorry you are having a hard time on here OP. I always second guess myself at decision times. I think you should say something and see what they say. If it’s a no - just remember that a car isn’t for life.

To be fair to the OP Mercedes A Class is the go to car for a lot of the 6th formers at the school opposite me. On a school day the student car park is full of them.

Evvyjb · 11/11/2023 15:20

I've never bought a new car. EVER. I'm mid 30s and earn 50k+. I bought my Nissan Micra (1998 reg, £900) aged 17 and drove that until it died in a crash 15 years later. Then a Peugeot 5008 for £250 until it was rear ended and insurance wrote it off. And now a 2nd hand Dacia.

In a phrase, get over yourself.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/11/2023 15:22

littlejo67 · 11/11/2023 12:40

What's wrong with it? Why is it embarrassing? I have a Dacia and I am not embarrassed 😂

Me too! I love it and am very glad I didn't pay 1000's more for the same car with a few extra bits and a different badge

OP my next car will be a basic Sandero (a Clio with a a few less bells and whistles) - I'm 53 and couldn;t give a toss if it looks 'basic' it will my mine, it will get me places and will have no expensive finance

Seems daft to be worrying about driving a Merc!

Nomnomnom66 · 11/11/2023 15:28

I've got a crappy old polo with a dent in it. But sure, a Mercedes A class is 'basic'.

hotpotlover · 11/11/2023 15:29

getinthedust · 11/11/2023 12:44

It’s a Mercedes A Class and I just think it’s basic and a car a parent would buy a child who just passed their test.

😂😂😂😂

My parents never bought me a car.

And now, in my thirties, earning quite well, but with 2.5 small children, all I can afford is a 2006 Honda Jazz.

SofiYol · 11/11/2023 15:29

Which model did you get?

I agree the standard a-class feel “basic” for what you pay.

I test drove loads, there wasn’t much price difference in say the 1.3 engine and the 2 litre engine but they felt completely different to drive. I had an AMG model, but even that doesn’t come with all the “extras” like apple play, ambient lighting, heated seats etc - things other cars come with as standard in the same price range so yes while they are lovely cars you would have had more “extras” in other cars that cost less.

I LOVED mine, but if you don’t love yours send it back. It’s too expensive to keep and regret.

Wouldyouguess · 11/11/2023 15:29

Poor you, I feel so so so sorry for you.

FFS, some people have no filter.

For a second I thought you were going to say you’d bought a Citroen, and I’d have understood why you were embarrassed, but I think you’re fine with a Merc!

I love my little citroen 😂😂

It must be hard to park a Mercedes under a bridge 🤷‍♀️

Indeed. 😂

CommonOrNot · 11/11/2023 15:31

Op is being given a bit of grief here and it’s unnecessary.

I actually understand, I definitely wouldn’t say it’s an embarrassing car. But 100% geared towards young people and first time drivers. Ask the dealership if you can return it and get something better.

Cost of living crisis and OP is quite rightfully being mocked for complaining about a 'basic' 30k car.
Maybe she can go and moan and Conservative party conference next time. Im sure Rishi will give her the ear she needs.

Hippodogamus · 11/11/2023 15:35

Use the cooling off period.

How about a Skoda Kamiq? It’s a small SUV, slightly smaller than a shortage and cheaper too!

LadyPenelope68 · 11/11/2023 15:35

I’d it school holidays or something? There are some ridiculous, likely wind up, posts today

I don’t know what planet you’re on if you think a new Merc A class is what a parent would buy a child who’s just passed their test!

On my planet, an old Ford Fiesta would be more like it.

bellamountain · 11/11/2023 14:38

I think it's because a lot of 18 year olds do drive them, especially because they get them on finance whilst living at home. They are incredibly common round here. Audi, BMW and Mercedes hatches have taking place of the Corsas and Fiestas in recent years..... it's no wonder Ford have discontinued the Fiesta (which is a shame because it's a great car). I'd probably use the cooling off period OP, maybe look at a Ford Puma if you want to be higher up? Or a C class 3 series instead?

Not where I live! Mostly Fiestas, Corsas, Polos or Golfs and that's with wealthy parents who could afford more expensive cars.

One girl did get a brand new Range Rover Evoque for her 17th.

Mine can buy their own goddamn cars. They will appreciate them more.

DomingoinLittleOakley · 11/11/2023 14:44

Blimey! Don't tell my daughter, I only bought her a 14 year-old Fiat 500 with extremely dodgy electrics. If she she sees this she's going to be asking why she didn't get a Merc like all the other 18 year-olds.

Phew. I’m currently driving round in my 12 year-old banged up Fiat500. So this gives me hope that someone will be willing to buy it off me for their child’s first car instead of OP’s “shit” Merc 😅

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 11/11/2023 15:46

getinthedust · 11/11/2023 14:22

Lol. So we can’t complain about anything in life because the world is shit?

Not exactly. But if this isn't a reverse, you're coming off as pretty tone-deaf here. Suggest you check your privilege.

SoMuchSimpler · 11/11/2023 15:49

Most people can't even afford to pay for the insurance on their child's first car, never mind the car itself.
