Things people do that make you cringe?

People posting photos of their holiday on social media with a caption like “this is how my Monday morning is looking”. Like calm down Joanne, you’ll be back in the office by next Monday.

Middle management telling me they pay my wages.

People thinking that are different and edgy because they wear Dr Martens (I do still love the boots though)

OP posts:

Joe Biden.

Viviennemary · 12/11/2023 17:46

People constantly boasting about their children's achievements.

lyingonthebeach · 12/11/2023 18:00

I need to add :

People who say 'I' when they mean 'me'. As in, 'Please email it to John and I.' They think they are being smart but they are not.

Nope. I love Disney. I would go to DisneyWorld, without the kids, so I could enjoy it and savour it all

Agreed. And that goes for any theme park to be fair! My favourite thing to do.

@Blueink I'm in Scotland. Perfectly normal here. Regional, and nothing to do with America.

Aye, because nobody in the world has mobility issues and everyone is as fit and able as everyone else 🙄

Pretty sure people with mobility issues in airports have motorised carts that take them around the airport or have you not seen those?

CelestialTwins · 12/11/2023 18:34

greengreengrass25 · 12/11/2023 14:02

I'm drinking fruit cordial today

I do sometimes drink squash

What's the difference? I say either for Robinson's type stuff... Pop a bit of the squash /cordial into a glass of water. I usually buy the shop brand double concentrate though

Edited

It’s spread everywhere unfortunately, I never heard it in Scotland years ago.

Did you mean to quote someone?

That'll be me!
I've got Winnie the pooh and Disney princess PJ's, piglet nightie. I also have a princess dressing gown to go with the pjs 😁👸

greengreengrass25 · 12/11/2023 18:53

@CelestialTwins

The cordial tastes slightly less artificial perhaps. It is definitively different

Not everyone requires that level of help. There's a broad spectrum. Plenty of people use escalators instead of stairs but they don't need to take the lift. The moving walkways are the equivalent of an escalator.

katseyes7 · 12/11/2023 19:05

Men who wear their trousers halfway down their backsides so their underwear is clearly visible. 🤮
I've seen this more times than l care to remember, at work. Men bending over supermarket trolleys. And worse.... hairy backs and a hint (worse, if you're very unlucky) of bum crack. 🤮🤮🤮

Delphinium20 · 12/11/2023 19:12

If you said, "It's take away," in the US, you might be assumed to be a criminal and it could mean you have no intention of paying for it! Like, "i will take what I want" or "I'll just take that." Context and location matter :)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/11/2023 19:19

Fine if u live or come from US but not if you are anywhere in the U.K. it’s not regional at all, but crappy American reality TV language creeping in, like bangs instead of having a fringe.

How small-minded. Why is American English 'crappy'? It's just how English is spoken in America (not just on reality tvHmm). Languages and dialects have always changed and adapted due to contact with other cultures, throughout history. It is only natural that it happens more, and faster, with the huge melting-pot that is the internet. There's no need to be so parochial and unpleasant about it.

You misquoted me.

I didn’t say American English is crappy, but reality TV.

Context is everything, it makes me cringe as sounds rude and lazy to say “can I get”. Since I acknowledged it being said in US or someone from US wouldn’t make me cringe, not parochial.

Language might change, but IMO, which I and several PP highlighted, this one isn’t for the better.

bonzaitree · 12/11/2023 19:52

People who make sex noises when they’re eating

fgs shut up!

Lorrainedrops · 12/11/2023 20:51

Me too. 😁 I don't drink tea or coffee so it's fruit juice, squash, and a can of coke in the evening 😋

Mikimoto · 12/11/2023 21:24

People who for whatever reason end up living somewhere like Sheffield or Leeds and then say "Actually, we really like it there....".

British singers who sing with an extreme American accent eg, Joss Stone who is from bloody Somerset and Adele who is from Tottenham FFS!

Also, Anne Marie.. lovely voice but why the American gangster/ghetto accent?? Tom Walker.. who is Scottish for heaven’s sake.. does it too.

For months before I'd seen anne Marie just heard her on the radio, I thought she was black. You know when you just have an image of someone before you know what they look like?

Was shocked when I saw her 😂

I did the same with Tom Walker. I get that in songs, some words/lyrics may take on a bit of an American twang but why change your whole dialect and sing with a entirely fake accent? It’s always irked me….

spookehtooth · 12/11/2023 22:49

Everyone complaining about men showing off their bum, you're so mean! It's peacocking, just trying to show you we're potty trained, able to wipe our bums properly 🤷‍♂️ No fear of underwear with skids when you're doing the washing. No pleasing some people
