Things people do that make you cringe?

People posting photos of their holiday on social media with a caption like “this is how my Monday morning is looking”. Like calm down Joanne, you’ll be back in the office by next Monday.

Middle management telling me they pay my wages.

People thinking that are different and edgy because they wear Dr Martens (I do still love the boots though)

OP posts:

Because if they have ‘trodden in something’ the next person to use the trolley puts their food on top of it?

Willyoujust · 12/11/2023 08:24

I really don’t think people are saying should of. It is a contraction - should’ve

Lizzyinatizzy · 12/11/2023 08:29

People who use ‘I was sat’ and ‘I was stood’ incorrectly

Chaoticfuckpig · 12/11/2023 08:35

This thread reminds me of the emotionally anorexic people I’ve met along the way who allow their joy stealing mind-set to keep them firmly placed on the lonely high road.

They know everything they don’t want out of life but aren’t brave enough to ask themselves what they do want.

It is always much safer to criticise people enjoying themselves than to put yourself out there and be fully yourself. Reminds me of teenagers in high school who are obsessed with the looks and activities of their peers lest they stand out in any way.

Sad really.

It’s good to practice generosity of spirit. See someone on holiday on social media and have a go at thinking ‘oh wow I’m so happy for them, they deserve it.’ See someone in their matching PJ Christmas pictures and think, how lovely that family brings them so much happiness.

You might notice you end up living in a softer world if you experiment with this mindset. You have a choice.

pictoosh · 12/11/2023 08:41

I do agree with you @Chaoticfuckpig - even though I am becoming more and more misanthropic as I grow older.

Grown people describing things as Awesome! They're not teenagers and neither are they Yoof. Constantly saying Wow!

Yes, I find this a really tiresome word and also the word cool to describe everything. Back in the late 90s I had a manager who was in his 40s then, using "cool" multiple times a day. It was a mixed age department so some very young and others (like me) 40s onwards, so I think he thought it made him as one with the youngsters. 🙄

Chaoticfuckpig · 12/11/2023 08:53

I love older people using words from their time- cool, groovy, awesome, rad etc. it placed them in time and I can imagine instantly them as youngsters and I think it’s quite adorable really.
Better than snarky people who are ‘so grown up’.

cardibach · 11/11/2023 22:34

Is there any need to be so condescending? You make yourself look rather unpleasant.

To be fair, you were just as condescending to the OP.

MeinKraft · 12/11/2023 03:06

People who post something which is nearly always something mundane followed by 'discuss' or, worse, '3,2,1...go!' As if we are all just sitting frantically waiting to give Laura our opinions on blush pink wedding dresses or the number for a window cleaner.

Ha ha I agree with this, discuss or go at the end of a question make me feel like I'm sitting my A levels again, just why do people feel it's an appropriate thing to write? 🤷🏽‍♀️

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/11/2023 09:20

porridgeisbae · 11/11/2023 13:45

People who feel like they have to correct other people's spelling or grammar on the internet.

Especially when they're wrong. Grin

The only time I ever corrected anyone was on another (largely male) forum, when someone had corrected someone else - and made a very basic mistake in his own post! Talk about pots and kettles…

What really did make me cringe some years ago, was when someone on a members only writers’ forum took it upon herself to point out - on the open forum - that someone else had used a Latin phrase incorrectly. She’d evidently always seen herself as ‘superior’ but this really was taking the cake. If she’d really felt the need, she could have sent a private email.

Yes! Agree with this. Assuming people who do this are trying to ape the younger ones (who, of course, are the only ones who could possibly be where it's at) is a form of ageism IMO.

As an aside, I just typed 'one's' above, before noticing my mistake and correcting it. I certainly know how to use apostrophes and form plurals. Errors like that can happen to anyone. Including those who sneer at them.

NotAHoot · 12/11/2023 09:28

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER omg I think I might know that woman IRL 😂.

Latin graduate who works in a corporate job but writes on the side. The person I know IRL is bloody awful, so wouldn't surprise me

🎶It should of been me 🎶🎶👰🤣🤢
HAVE!!!!!! 🤣

Edited

LOL, try singing 'it should HAVE been me' and see how far you get!

'Should of' doesn't exist in spoken language. It's a written rendering of ''ve', which sounds like an unstressed 'of'. Sometimes through carelessness, sometimes through limited exposure to the written word. Neither of which merit the kind of sneering people give this usage on here.

Sniffers and coughing loudly .
Women who use words like hubby or one who recently explained water spillage looked like wee wee.🤢
In her 40s.
Talking like schoolgirls makes me gag.

Yeah, I cringe at adults using “Yummy” instead of “delicious”, as if they’re a toddler. Same with “tummy” instead of “stomach” or “abdomen” if they’re not actually sure it’s the stomach . Hearing a grown woman say “My tummy hurts” just gives me the ick. They’re not 5. Men seem perfectly capable of saying “I’ve got stomach ache” so I’m not sure why some women still use toddler phrases, well after they’ve got any young children in the house.

While that is just cringeworthy, it’s really annoying when doctors ask you “any pains in your tummy?” I find it a bit patronising. Do adults really not know what the word “abdomen” means?

CountessWindyBottom · 12/11/2023 09:45

Performance parenting. I love to see parents engage with their children but when it’s performance parenting it’s an absolute cringefest.

When my sister in law was telling her 6 month old off for grabbing my child’s hands, ‘careful … you’ll hurt her’ as if a 6 month old knows what you’re talking about

she would have been saying that mainly for your child’s benefit though. It just conveys empathy to your child that she acknowledged the baby might have hurt her unwittingly. And actually 6 month old babies are capable of understanding more than you think anyway. You wouldn’t just not talk to a young baby “because they don’t understand what I’m saying” - how would they ever learn language if you did that?

Can’t be that one - mine was already retired and this was some years ago - but I can’t say I’m surprised that there are more like her about!

niffynickers · 12/11/2023 09:55

Its not a pram its a food trolley. Make your kids walk or if they're small put them in the place made for them in the front of the trolley.

Women who wear adult school girl shoes

What are adult school girl shoes?

Genuine question

Bowbobobo · 12/11/2023 10:41

People riding bikes without holding the handlebars. Even worse if they’re looking at their phone. I actively want them to die, which make me cringe for myself.

Men wearing shorts after 1 October.

Seems as though you're just not keen on her in general, what would expect her to do otherwise? She's just trying to teach her baby. In that case should we not speak to animals as they can't understand? I see nothing cringe about what she did at all
